Hey newbie here!
I too suffer from rosacea (diagnosed about a year ago)...Though mine is more of an oily skin type. If your skin is more oily than dry then do not try Zenmed as I so stupidly did! After about 3 days I had broken out in a yellow pus-filled rash all over my jawline, nose and upper-lip...My skin stung so bad and really hurt for days after (took about 1 week to totally settle down). I have tried grape seed extract at 95% purity and pycnogenol at 85%...helped a little with my occular symptoms but that's about it! I stay away from all the usual triggers: sulphates, benzoyle peroxide, lotions/creams, anything harsh/abrasive, bismuth oxychloride...oh and sunlight duh! Want to try fotofacials, but right now it's just very mild cleansers for oily skin, my metrogel and twice weekly Dermalogica clay masks...That's about all I think! |
So I quess you literally can be a rosy girl I've tried so many things out there but they only work so long. I too have occular rosacea and because I can't take antibiotics it can be a hard thing to deal with. I have an oily face and dry eyes |

Ok, I had rosacea for over 10 years. I finally got rid of it for good this past year. I researched forever on what to do about it. I began to read up on 'the Master Cleanse" it is a 10 day fast to totally clean out your body. I was hesitant at first but went ahead and tried it. About a month later I began to notice my cheeks werent red anymore. It has been 6 months now since I did the cleanse and so far the rosacea hasnt returned. I benefited so many other things from the cleanse and will do it once a year to maintain everything. I really reccomend everyone doing it. I am sorry this is short (I get lazy at typing), if anyone has any questions about it please feel free to reply or message me!
thanks! |

Canada, did you change anything else at the time starting when you did the cleansing fast? Anything within your skincare products for example? Soap, cleanser, moisturizer, anything?
And to what do you attribute the improvement in your rosacea? I know you said the cleansing fast, but what did the fast do that would have affected your rosacea? Is there a theory behind the rosacea (in terms of causation) that the fast specifically addressed?
Thanks... |

I didnt change anything in regards to my cleansing and et al process. But I do use products that are alcohol free and for sensitive skin. I also use mineral make up.
But I have been doing that for years and I still had the rocasea. I do believe that the fast got rid of it for good. Although, like I said I will do one once a year to keep my body clean. After a lot of reading and researching I have come to believe that the rocasea is a result of toxins and such in our body. Our everyday foods are laced with pesticides amoungst other things that are not good for us. So now I try to eat as much raw food as possible and not so much proccessed foods. But I am human and cant resist certain things at times. That is why I feel I will do a cleanse each year. THe Master cleanse was written by Stanley Burroughs and is also know as the lemon aide diet. I didnt do the cleanse at all for diet purposes. I came across it when I was researching about rocasea. I honestly believe that this got rid of my rocasea. I did the cleanse this past year while I was working in Moscow. AS I said earlier I didnt change any of my cleaning rituals (although I havent used one type of product on a regular basis, but have now been using PSF products for the past 5 months). In Russia the water killed my face as it is loaded with so many metals and such (it literally smells like blood from all the copper in it). So I did have a huge acne break out that lasted for 4 months (never had acne before) but it has since cleared up as I left Russia early July. Even though I had the huge breakout and skin problems from the water, my rosacea did not return. So it has now been 6 months that I have been rosacea free and thus far there are no signs of it returning (knock on wood). I am sorry but I can not find the web site that linked rosacea and the master cleanse directly. You can buy the book about the cleanse but it is also online in its total, its not very long. The cleanse has so many benefits that everyone should do it at least once a year. |

Yeah I'm literally a "rosy" girl! I find my skin has its good days and bad days - which I hate with a passion . Right now it has settled down but that could change at the drop of a hat. I find having more of an oily skinned rosacea I am more prone to congestion, especially on my cheeks...which I never suffered from before in my pre-rosacea days. I could use lotions and creams at will but now I must be very careful that they don't break me out. It's very frustrating having to be so darned careful with everything I use and do to my face (man I'd love to get a facial or peel or something like that but my skin would freak!) I too use mineral make-up, mostly PureLuxe and Everday Minerals but I do miss my Bare Essentuals (bismuth oxychloride ) I have never tried any antibiotics for my occular symptoms...though I'm thinking of asking my doc about it. I can't even wear contact lenses because I get an instant gritty and dry sensation on my eyes and no amount of eye drops help! Oh well, I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles...Bye! |

Hi,
I'm essentially new - joined up AGES ago and haven't been on in ages either!
I'm not sure if I have rosacea or not but the last 5 odd facials I've had done (by different people and at different places) all the beauticians have comments on how dry my skin is and that I have rosacea. I'm only 24 and the dry skin is killing me, I put on an inch of moisturiser and it's absorbed in seconds**.
(** this may be a slight exaggeration)
On top of that I now find myself wearing foundation almost every day to hide the redness. I go red over everything - every emotion, if I'm hot/cold/fine, if I meet someone of either gender if I know them or not, alcohol, food - either hot in temperature or spiciness ... EVERYTHING! It's been getting worse as well. I was using Clarins liquid foundation, which, when I first started using it in July 05 worked fine, it no longer covers the red sufficiently and I've switched to bare essentials powder foundation. This still doesn't cover the redness.
My questions are:
Does this sound like rosacea?
Should I go to a dermatologist (or some other specialist)? Will s/he be able to help? The beautician I'm currenty seeing has recommended pevonia products - are they any good?
Thanks for sticking with such a novel of a post!

Ok, tried V Beam and works well indeed.
Also, please explain the master cleanse for us here in detail if you can canadagirl, or post a link, something. Thanks.
The thing is, if you have leaky facial vessels, what can really be done other than laser I'm thinking to really make much of a dif. |

Fif ~
It sounds like Rosacea. One should always visit a dermatologist to get a correct diagnosis.
Rosacea is not curable, but, there are things that can be done to "keep it at bay".
Sunscreen is really essential, at 50, I see a significant difference between my sun - exposed areas and my protected areas. The left side of my face from driving is much more red and has more broken capillaries than my right side, for instance. So, if I was 24 again, that is one thing I would do differently - be diligent about sunscreen use.
Rosacea skin is delicate skin and must be treated with the gentlest of products. Pevonia does have a line for Rosacea ~ I have not used it, but, have heard good things about it.
I vistited the office of my dermatologist yesterday for a skin cancer issue. My skin is so reactive right now that we discussed skin care.
She agreed with PocoLoco from another post and said I could not use La Mer with my skin in a reactive state.
She agreed that hyaluronic acid in a serum was good.
She also put me on Avene Cicalfate for a month to calm my skin down. (It is a non- prescription skin cream).
I am not to use any department store brands.
I will Post if the products that she recommended work for me. So far it is great, but, it has been less than 24 hours and knowing "rosacea" skin, anything could happen in a week.
Kakarot ~
I had the V-Beam, too!!! It really does work well. |

Fif, I agree with Charmed, this sounds like Rosacea. You can learn more about it by surfing the web but beware of some of the claims about "cures" such as seabuckthorn berry soaps and oils. (Didn't work for me and the seabuckthorn berry oil made me break out.)
Charmed, did your dermatologist say anything about emu oil?
Right now, Ultra emu oil mixed with hyaluronic acid serum is the only thing I can put on my throat without it turning red immediately.
I'm going to look into the Avene product Charmed mentioned, but Fif, it's worth your while to try a mixture of Ultra emu oil and hyaluronic acid (mix together in the palm of your hand). There are no "nasties" to irritate skin, and the anti-inflammatory nature of emu oil can not be overstated. This works much better for me than the Decleor essential oils that are supposed to calm skin, for example (the Rose d'Orient balm and oil blends).
It's possible to buy sample 5 ml samples of Ultra emu oil and hyaluronic acid atwww.dianayvonne.com. I think thatwww.GardenofWisdom.com also offers these products in sample sizes (but I'm not certain). |

My dermatologist put me on a very spartan regime for a month:
Bio2 Cosmeceuticals Gentle Facial Ceanser (it is actually for use after Laser surgery, etc.) BUT, my skin has become so reactive/traumatized that I am to use it for a month to attempt to return my skin to some degree of normalcy.
I then spray with Avene Thermal Spring Water Spray;
Then hyaluronic acid;
Then Avene Cicalfate (see below) which has zinc and copper and is supposed to be healing. This cream does have very good, but limited, reviews on Make-Up Alley.
I am not recommending this regime yet, as I just started it and I don't know if it will actually work.
PocoLoco ~
She basically agreed with you about everything. She wants me to follow this regime for a month twice a day. She will see me in a month to re-evaluate my skin for reaction to Aldara and rosacea, then I might be able to expand to Emu Oil, etc. Thank you very much for your help.
I must be honest, I have NEVER seen my skin react like this. (don't get me wrong, I have rosacea, and my skin acts up, but, not to the extent that it is right now). I am now very sympathetic to people whose skin is normally this reactive. Mine is red, itchy, etc.
I feel it was caused by using a Glycolic Acid cleanser and mask, stress, and my use of Aldara (prescripton drug) to treat pre - skin cancers on my face (top of cheeks, nose, etc.). I don't see any skin cancer except the spot that was removed last year with Aldara, it appears to be making a comeback attempt. The dermatologist said that Aldara would "ferret" out any suspicious areas.
Avene Cicalfate from Avene website:
"Clinically proven effective skin recovery cream helps maintain an optimal healing enviroment during the skin recovery process.
Micronized sucralfate helps the healing process when topically applied
Copper sulfate and zinc sulfate work synergistically to promote and maintain a healthy enviroment during skin recovery
A high percentage of Avéne theraml spring water helps soothe and soften the skin
Preservative free, fragrance free" |

Sorry, I forgot to ask my other questions ... sigh ... it's 10:35am and my brain still hasn't woken up!
- With my very sensitive skin and the fact that it's ridiculously dry, I'm looking to start doing some home treatments (I know I should be doing them anyway but I forget sigh). What steps (eg mask, exfoliator etc) should I use and how often. Plus what are some good brands that I can try.
Thanks again!

So, the goals you are trying to achieve with home treatments are (correct me if I'm wrong) deep moisturization and surface exfoliation? Anything else? And does a nightly treatment as part of your skincare regimen qualify or did you mean only special once a week type stuff? |

Hi Poco,
I'm essentially looking to reduce the dryness of my skin. Sorry if my post wasn't very clear, as I said brain no functioning currently... I'm looking for advice mainly for a once a week type thing, but any tips on daily care would be fantastic.
I really don't know much about beauty regimes or products so consider me a sponge ready to learn.
Thanks! |

OK, here is my advice to reduce dryness:
-drink 8-10 glasses of water every day
-use only cleansers that are detergent-free and ph balanced
-be very moderate in use of alcohol-containing products on the skin (consider not using)
-use mandelic acid (with or without alcohol in the solution) as your AHA of choice, 15%. Use 3-4 times per week if tolerated. Wait 30 minutes after application before putting any other product on skin.
-use a combination of hyaluronic acid plus emu oil as your moisturizer. This can be applied as often as needed during the day
-spritz your face during the day if it feels dry, water or alcohol free toner
-consider using a humidifier
-use a sunscreen every day, last step before makeup if you use makeup
That's all I can think of... |

Hi, Fif. In my humble opinion, a visit to a dermatologist should be the first thing on your to-do list. It may or may not be rosacea. When I was in my 20's I developed a condition very much like what you describe. It really ticked me off, because I'd had extremely oily, acne prone skin all through my adolescence. And now here I was in my 20's with extremely dry, flakey, angry-looking skin.
Like you, I used a ton of moisturizer on it and it just kept getting worse. Finally I went to a dermatologist who diagnosed it as "seborrheic dermatitis". This is the same disorder that causes dandruff, but sometimes (as in my case) it appears only on the face. The treatment for it is about exactly the opposite of what you'd do for dry skin...so I had been doing everything wrong.
You may, in fact, have rosacea. But only a dermatologist can say for sure, and there can be negative consequences in treating it as though you do have it when it could be something else entirely. |

Hi I'm new
I just had IPL last Monday - my first session. I have combination skin with redness on nose and chin and small cappillaries on cheeks. I also have a pale birthmark on my forehead. The nurse I saw for my initial consultation said I probably have mild rosacea. I was not too surprised to hear this as my mum has it as well.
Anyway, IPL works best if skin is pale, as you need a contrast between the problem area and the normal skin. I'm almost albino so I'm a good candidate.
After my session on Monday, there was some redness. It basically looked like I had a sunburn and my skin felt hot when I was driving home. They say you can go back to work after an IPL session but I'm glad I have time off work right now. I looked pretty pink and my cheeks were a little swollen. Still, the next day, that all went down and my face looked normal. I'm currently having a minor purge - which I believe is not unheard of. So I have a couple of small pimples. 2 of my capillaries on my cheek have faded by 50% and some freckles have darkened. I'm told I will need another session at least to see real results, and I have to wait a month. But it's very exciting!

can a person with mild facial redness (don`t think it is rocasea, rather pre-rocasea condition, like the face is of slightly other colour than the neck) use Retin-A?
will it not be too harsh? will it not worsen it? |

I think there's a very good chance that it would worsen it. In my case, and I probably have pre-rosacea, if I use a retinoid even once my face will hurt for the next day or two. Using it more often made my skin worse. |

Aiva, I have been using Retin-A 102x a week on my face for many years...and my face is definitely redder than the rest of me. I attribute it to the fact that retinoic acid actually allows the building of new blood vessels. I may lay off the Retin-A and retinols for some time to try and reduce the redness. (and that sucks, because I REALLY like my Retin-A!)
So if you are already red, I probably wouldn't suggest it. I would also avoid products like KH that contain Vit A...that turned me into a tomato head. |

thank you for answering PocoLoco and bethany!
bethany, I hope you are back to normal now from this KH negative effect!
... I`m not that red in fact, just my face is little bit pinkish while my neck is creamy-white. Can it be considered pre-rosacea?
I would really like to try Retin-A for its proved anti-aging properties and it seems that there is no equally effective stuff
may be I could try it cautiously and see what happens?
I`ve been using Avene Diacneal now for about a month, it is a very harsh product I think, containing 0.1% retinaldehyde + 6% glycolic acid. At first my face was very irritated from it and developed red patches after application, but now (after a month of use every other night) it does not react this harsh, just mild and short-term stinging and mild redness sometimes.
Can I judge from my experience with Diacneal wether I should try retinoids or not?
and bethany - would you sacrifice some redness which you can cover with make-up to anti-aging effect from Retin-A if it`s working for you and you can tolerate it?
( I surely do NOT mean if it irritates you as this KH product!) |
