I know there are lots of threads already on the (understandably very popular) topic of DIY C Serums ... I've searched and not found answers to my questions, unfortunately. Also, there are variations of serum recipes all over this forum in hundreds of different threads - it's getting rather complicated trying to track them down. If it's okay with the mods, I'd love to see all the recipes in one place ... and maybe some of y'alls can edumacate me further.

One question: what bases/additives are absolute no-no's for L-Ascorbic Acid serums & why?

Another question: Has anyone here made an oil-based serum using Ascorbyl Palmitate? How did that work for you? Can you share a recipe?

Yet another: Are there any recipes for Magnesium Ascorbyl Palmitate? I'd like to try that (more stable, right?) and I have no idea what the proportions would be.

I just made my first C serum two nights ago. It has an aloe gel base. I dissolved 1/4 tsp C crystals in 1/4 tsp distilled water before adding 1 1/2 tsp (natural, preservative-free) aloe gel and 1/4 tsp veg. glycerin. Not a bad feel for my first effort, but I'll cut the glycerin by half next time (if I leave it in at all), as it's a wee bit sticky.

Please share your recipes and variations! Thanks. Very Happy

OMG - boy you know how to open Pandoras box doncha! Wink

I'm thinking 7-up would probably not be a good base Razz In all seriousness - any base you would consider using for a 'serum' would be appropriate for the AA.

Someone here asked about an oil-based C serum, but don't recall any follow-up (though I have been MIA most of the week). My thinking is if that's all you're putting on the oil base should be fine and you would use the same amount as if you were using a water base. It wouldn't work out too well if you layered over it as my thinking is the oil would prevent further absorption of other 'actives'.

The maximum recommended % for MAP is 5%. I have never gotten the 'sting' from MAP that I have from higher AA concentrations, so don't know if the 5% MAP is the equivalant of say 20% AA. I'm sure someone here does, and I may have it in my notes somewhere, but I'm delirously tired right now and can't think straight, lol.

Wow. Nobody's interested in sharing? I'm surprised. The DIY thread is HUGE.

I think because pretty much it's been gone at from every imaginable angle.

Have you tackled the C threads yet?

I thought the aloe issue was iffy because of the possibility of metals in it? Anybody know anything about that? Also, what about the issue of using distilled water, you have to use it within a couple of days? Does the water degrade it?

Pretty much every natural substance is going to have trace amounts of metals in it, I think I recall, I could be wrong - wouldn't be the 1st time Laughing So using aloe I don't think is going to be a problem as the amount is trace.

If you're making an amount meant to last you say a month or so you're going to have to add a preservative. L-ascorbic is the most unstable of the "C's" and will oxidize quickly anyway.

Um, yes. As I mentioned in the first post, I was hoping to compile the info that's ALL OVER the board in one place. I've done all the searches - there's a lot of info in threads seemingly unrelated, so after a while it's impossible to find it all.
