Have you guys considered that some of the facial products you guys are using could be drying your lips out?
I used to use a face wash that had zinc in it as an ingredient and my lips were getting very dry and I could not figure out why for the longest time... until I switched face washes and then my lips went back to *normal* (I am a lip gloss addict) after I stopped using it.
i'm not sure exactly which ingredients would cause this... but it's something to consider!
and I also use Paula's choice lip treatment balm which I find keeps my lips in pretty good shape!
although I do agree that it is a good idea to moderate lip blam use to get your lips back into balance... however I find that very difficult to stick to myself! and definantly don't lick your lips!
good luck! |

Thanks for the heads-up, Tosca. I believe I am short-listed too. I don't want to harass her as she's receiving too many pms. Carekate, oh carekate, where are you?
Thanks also lulabelle for your input. I don't think it's something in what I am doing though as I've always suffered from dry lips and have changed my routine countless number of times. I'm glad you found a good one which works for you. |

l'occitane pure shea butter in the little tin is nice. It can take a few nights of use to notice improvement, and be sure to drink lots of water. |

I've found my favorite lip balm at Wal-Mart. It keeps my lips so moist and soft. I love it. It's called Lip Vitamins lip balm in Vanilla Bean. It cost 1.49 and the ingredients are:
Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Beeswax, Jojoba Seed oil, Sweet Almond oil, Grape seed oil, Wheat Germ oil, Sunflower seed oil, Squalane, Tocopherol, Retinyl Palmintate, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, Benzyl Alcohol, Hydroxy-Citronellal, Citral Benzyl Salicitate, Cinnamal, Benzyl Cinnamate, Linalool, Benzyl Benzoate, D-limonene, Propylparaben |
What part of the store was this in? I've just started using Nuxe Paris Honey Balm and it seems to be helping but something cheaper would be nice. Although the jar is huge.
Can someone tell me more about Carekate and her products? |

Carekate is an forum member who is an awesome DIYer. She's always making wonderful products. If you check the DIY thread, you'll find a lot of her recipes there. I've tried a few, and they're great. Anything listed as Dr. Holland is also hers.
She has concocted some lip balms, and one of them is an overnight treatment. She posted on another thread that she is looking for people who suffer from dry flaky lips so that she could send them samples. I don't know how many testers she needs, but send her a PM if you're interested.
You have to be patient, though. She only gets 30 minutes of computer time a day, so sometimes its hard for her to answer right away. If you look around the forum, you'll be amazed at what she acomplishes in that 30 minutes. |

try lamer lip balm but really expensive around 40 USD, it's as good as kiehl's spf15. Maybe you just need to keep switching the lip balm |

I don't think my suggestion is going to help those who have seriously dry lips but I also find those supposed lip plumpers to be a good moisturiser/exfoliator. In particular the one by Jemma (Australian Brand) which is very sticky so it lasts and lasts on the lips. Lip balms are nothing compare to this, though it is ironic since this product isn't advertised as a moisturiser. |

my lips peel off in sheets too, leaving red spots and cracks that are hard to cover. My hypothesis is that the problem is...the peeling. I think we peely lip people are unconciously messing with it all day, and it's essentially pulling off a scab and letting a new scab form. Our lips are so sensitive that when you peel, you're revealing that stinging new skin which immediately dries up and peels off the next day. Let's try a 1 week moratorium on peeling and see if it does anything...yeah, we'll look like zombies for a week, but clearly rubbing balm on isn;t doing much for the hardcore sufferers here...who's going to try it? or are you all going to wait for my results? |

I know this is an expensive outlay, but it lasts for absolutely ages. My all-time best product I've ever tried for dry, flakey lips is Valmont Contour Lip & Eye Cream. You only need a tiny amount (I apply it twice - morning and night) and it makes a huge difference in softness, comfort and smoothness. It also seems to plump up my lips. |

I also have this problem...badly during the winter. I have tried everything under the sun.
This is my new discovery: pure coconut oil, the kind in the huge, you-only-have-to-buy once-in-a-lifetime tub. I scrub my lips with some finely crushed walnuts and then scrape just the tiniest bit from the top with a small spoon. Let it melt on my finger and rub in.
It sinks in and helps keep them soft. I have found that commercial lip balms just don't work, even if they have coconut oil in them. I think the waxes in them keep the oils from absorbing.
Just throwing this out there. I know how horrid this can feel!

My lips crack and peel a lot too. I am tempted to try Cle de Peau's Lip Treatment. It got a lot of good reviews on MUA. And, I'm also picking up Carekate's Overnight Lip Treatment. She's a lip junkie so I'm sure anything she makes works for her.
I've been using her Dolce Vita lip balm and am in heaven. |

Hi,
When my lips get dry I go for the Bag Balm. It doesn't have a wonderful smell or taste, but it does work for me. I keep it slathered on and around my lips when I am alone, and apply a smaller amount on my lips when I go out. And I reapply alot.
It's really cheap at the drugstore, so it might be worth a try.
Good Luck,

we can do it!!! You can still use balm exfoliators and the toothbrush thing, because I think it's the pulling on flakes that's ripping the skin and starting the whole cycle over again. Just put on so much lip balm that you can't pick. It's been working for me today! |

that's the website, www hyalogic com and for around $7.00 you get .5 VAT of the most wonderful stuff, I buy them in 3's and put some in little sample tubs for whole family. It's olive oil, hyaluronic acid, aloe beeswax, isopropyl myristate, cocoa butter, shea butter and biovert C. Called Episilk. I cannot live without it (such an hormonal drama queen today) |

I use the Blistex Herbal Answer in the tube. I had exactly the same issues with my lips since i was 4 years old...it was an everyday occurance to have peeling bleeding lips and they were alway so sore..
In July '06 i bought the Herbal Answer on a whim and literally have not had bleeding, peeling or cracking lips since then. I finally have normal looking and feeling lips like everyone else around me. I'm thrilled with this stuff and always have a tube with me wherever i go. I use it 3 or 4 times a day to make sure the lips don't get a chance to chap in the cold dry air here and they are so soft and smooth i still have a hard time believing that i don't have a lip problem anymore...
I would recommend this to anyone...also, several kids i know who have dried out lips love this stuff too...if kids love it, it's got to be great! |

Hi,
I hope your lips are feeling better by now. If not have you thought about adding moisture to your bedroom at night? I have a small humidifier in my bedroom and it seems to help my skin alot. I also use Smith's Rosebud Salve on my lips everynight. That also seems to help me. |
