Any ideas on what causes cracks/sores in the corners of your mouth? I have cold sores all my life but this is not like that.

Thanks.

I get these at times, it is supposed to be symptomatic of a B12 deficency. I am a veggie and they are quite common in vegans especially.

Hi Hattie, a friend of mine at work was plagued with these cracks in the corners of her months for YEARS and she finally discovered it was due to pernicious anaemia (not sure of spelling) but she too has regular injections from her GP which keeps these and other symptoms at bay.

Pernicious anaemia can be caused by B12 deficency.

I've read a few similar threads here on EDS where some sufferers of corner-of-mouth cracks have had luck by using an anti-fungus cream. It worked for me - within two days, my problem was solved. HTH.

Wow! Thanks for helping me solve a problem that I never really thought was solvable. I just thought it was because the air was dry or something. coincidentally, I just started taking b complex vitamins (I'm a veggie) so hopefully this will prevent it from happening again!

I suffered with the same problem for about a year and had no idea what was causing it. I do get cold sores fairly often and thought they just weren't healing properly.

I went to the dentist and he noticed the cracks/sores and immediately said that I was having a reaction to sodium lauryl sulfate found in most toothpastes.

I switched to Rembrandt sensitive which does not contain sls and the problem cleared up within days. Every once in a while I will use regular toothpaste (traveling and forget the Rembrandt) and the issue comes back after only one use.

HTH!

What you're experiencing is called angular cheilitis, an inflammatory lesion at the corner of the mouth. A vitamin B deficiency is one possible cause.

Here are some others:

-fungal or bacteria infection
-iron or vitamin B12 deficiency
-folate deficiency
-dentures

As has already been mentioned, many people use antifungal creams to treat this infection.
I think finding out what has caused this is key in fixing the problem and keeping it from coming back. A good diet is also important.

Best of luck.

I am going to try the B and change my toothpast. Then if still a problem I'll go the anti fungus meds.

Hi. My Chelitis was cured by Vitamin B12. If you can't get it from your Dr. a good liquid, or sublingual tablet will do. Regular B12 vitamin tablets are poorly absorbed by the body. Blackstrap molasses also has iron and all the vitamin B's so there's always that.

In my opinion this is a sign of yeast infection. You should see your doctor. Do you also have redness on your forehead and cheeks? If so it probably is a yeast infection. It is caused by oily scalp.

I can't believe it! I've had cracks in the corners of my mouth for years. They come and go. I use all sorts of lip balms, treatments and conditioners. They work for a while but then it comes back. I know that I don't have Herpes and now I think that you women have solved my mystery!! I am a vegetarian for about eight years and I don't take B12. But the good news is that I started taking B12 everyday from about a week ago.
