bethany, that sounds like a solid plan! Remember a while back when I posted on LM about my 4-week detox plan? The first week I took lemon water every morning, then the second week I added the cranberry water. That combined with all the fruits and veggies really helped the pounds melt off.
In fact, you have inspired me to get back on the detox plan! |

I am feeling pretty good about this! Are you doing any apple cider vinegar? I read in one of the Fat Flush books that it does NOT aggravate candida.
I am also continuing my candida death march at the same time...I switched to the P73 version of the Oil of Oregano (both caps and under the tongue) and am starting back on the diflucan. I think that I might actually be seeing some progress because my feet started itching (my top symptom), and I have not eaten any real carbs to trigger those symptoms. So it might be die-off.
I also ordered some Liver Care capsules which is recommended for people who take lots of meds, or have other liver issues (like drinking a lot of alcohol).
I may not end up a toothpick, but I'll be much less toxic! |

Day 2 is over and I *should* be in bed, but alas I am not (yet).
- The Diet Coke Decline continues! I stuck to just 2 bottle of DC (only one caffeinated), as opposed to my usual 3 20oz caffeinated bottles. No real headache yet, thank goodness. Tomorrow I am going to drop both bottles down in sizes, so I am reducing my caffeine volume, as well as my overall DC volume.
And for those wondering why I am quitting gradually, we are talking about a 20+ year DEVOTION to DC and caffeine. I have only quit one time for 6 months in 20+ years, and the cold-turkey caffeine withdrawal almost killed me, lol. But I have to get rid of the caffeine, the aspartame, and the sodium because I am THE poster child for metabolic syndrome, and research shows that diet drinks are a big contributer. Plus, I have a sodium sensitivity, and the DC raises my blood pressure and causes me to retain water. Yet I have continued to drink it willingly, sigh.
- Fitday.com saves me from myself. When I kick into Diet Mode (which needs to change to Lifetime Eating Mode), I tend to not eat enough. Logging my food helps keep me from both over AND under eating....so I am up tonight until I finish drinking this protein shake since I needed some more calories for today.
- I took measurements today and entered them into a spreadsheet that I built some time ago, and had not updated since May 2006...it was MORTIFYING! I currently weigh only 2 pounds more, but all my measurements were MUCH bigger! That is SOOO not a good sign. But the good news is that it was probably the wake up call I needed to help keep me motivated.
I'm happy to email the spreadsheet to anyone that wants it. I developed it for another forum many years ago...it's nothing fancy, but it tracks your progress for 13 months, calculates your BMI, total inches lost, etc. Just PM me with your email address if you want it.
Ok...off to do 15 mins on my chi machine before bed. Some kind of exercise is important to increase circulation and lymphatic movement of the toxins and fat I am trying to get rid of.

Down .5lb today. (That means I am still up 3 from before I fell off the wagon, sigh) 19 pounds left to Goal 1.
But I did stick to buying one little caffeinated and one big decaf DC today. Depending on how I feel tomorrow morning, I may break completely away from the DC...if not tomorrow, then definitely sometime this work week. |

Oh yes....Diet Coke is my major downfall, and really my only vice in life (other than my cats ).
I am a prime candidate for aspartame poisoning, having indulged religiously and in high quantities for 20+ years. I used to joke that I don't have blood...I have Diet Coke coursing through my body. My former secretary had a DC sitting on my desk waiting for me each and every morning (bless her!!), and it continued through the day. Plus that's pretty much where I get my energy from since I have fibro.
Beth: Powered By Diet Coke
But I am breaking up with DC. Despite me being heartbroken and forlorn, I know this relationship is bad for me and I have to move on. I'll be seeking the comfort and support of my friends, and possibly a 12 step plan as I seek to eradicate all former vestiges from my life, sigh.
Actually, I was thinking about doing the complete break tomorrow but decided to wait until the weekend so that my inevitable grouchy moody wouldn't impact my clients....one of them told me to go ahead and do it tomorrow so that he could be entertained by my suffering TH and FR. Gotta luv 'em! |

Anyone who knows me knows that I looooove to research stuff...the more I read, the more informed I am, and the more my motivation increases (or possibly turns to disinterest!)
Right now I am immersing myself in books/articles/etc, focused on detoxing, weight loss, and ongoing dietary lifestyles for people that have metabolic syndrome, candida, fibro, and are hypothyroid...yes, I have ALL of that, and it makes it VERY difficult to lose weight. Focusing on it daily helps keep me motivated and on target.
So tonight I will be reading The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite by David Kessler MD (former FDA commissioner under 2 presidents)
Quote: |
Editorial Review - From Publishers Weekly
Conditioned hypereating is a biological challenge, not a character flaw, says Kessler, former FDA commissioner under presidents Bush and Clinton). Here Kessler (A Question of Intent) describes how, since the 1980s, the food industry, in collusion with the advertising industry, and lifestyle changes have short-circuited the body's self-regulating mechanisms, leaving many at the mercy of reward-driven eating. Through the evidence of research, personal stories (including candid accounts of his own struggles) and examinations of specific foods produced by giant food corporations and restaurant chains, Kessler explains how the desire to eat—as distinct from eating itself—is stimulated in the brain by an almost infinite variety of diabolical combinations of salt, fat and sugar. Although not everyone succumbs, more people of all ages are being set up for a lifetime of food obsession due to the ever-present availability of foods laden with salt, fat and sugar. A gentle though urgent plea for reform, Kessler's book provides a simple food rehab program to fight back against the industry's relentless quest for profits while an entire country of people gain weight and get sick. According to Kessler, persistence is all that is needed to make the perceptual shifts and find new sources of rewards to regain control. (May)

I don't expect that I will learn much new about recommended diets, but I think it will be very insightful as to how we are manipulated by the Corporate Americas of Food. I'll share any interesting tidbits that I read. |

Ugh...major food cravings today, which I can probably attribute to PMS. But I hunkered through them and did not give in (shockingly).
I also limited myself to a total of one caffinated DC today, so I am officially at 1/3 of my previous daily intake. Tomorrow may be the first day of NO DC...we'll have to see how things go.
Oddly, I noticed that my lymph nodes on the side of my neck and along the sides of my jaw are enlarged...could that be due to some of the detoxing I am working on? If anyone has a perspective, I would love to hear it. |

Any interesting tidbits in the book, Bethany? I realized I have a bad overeating problem when I sit down at the TV from 9 to 10. Doesn't matter how much or how little I have eaten through the day, there is something about sitting down in front of the TV where I just want to stuff my face with whatever and I can't seem to stop myself. Horrible habit and I'll never lose weight until I can control the overeating at this time.
BTW, I am sure swollen lymph nodes are possible while detoxing. Are you taking any probiotics, as that may help move things along/out? |

This is good news, bethany, as you know I did not want to give up my ACV drink. However, I am going back to basics, and for me that means lemon drink in the am, cranberry in the pm, and no room in my regimen for the ACV.
I also created an account on FitDay, and I LOVE IT! We are having a weight loss challenge at work, and FitDay makes it sooo easy to keep a food log! For me, that really helps me stay accountable.
And I'm so glad to hear that you and DC are breaking up! |

This was a rather interesting book on WHY we continue to eat in a manner that is not good for us. In a nutshell, the powerful combination of salt+fat+sugar (or even just 2 of 3) impacts our serotonin and dopamine levels...we end up eating something that physically makes us feel good (though we might not 100% realize that) and repeating that triggers a "reward" mentality every time it takes place. Doing it repeatedly creates a habit, and your brain will essentially direct you to indulge the second something triggers your desire...whether it is a smell, a word, or a picture, or a mention of something you like.
The book was also a platform for Dr. Kessler to get out there that Corporate Food America KNOWINGLY puts stuff out there that they know is unhealthy and is technically addictive/habit forming....but what is best for their revenue is worst for our health.
Key Point: (that really should have been emphasized far more emphatically) It is YOUR choice on whether to continue to eat the crap or not that they offer to us...and even one bite of a trigger food is guaranteed to kick off a downward spiral. The key is to be aware of that, and NOT eat the trigger food.
He did talk about the fact that that those habits would eventually be replaced by new habits in the brain, but it is a long process. He also acknowledged that the old triggers would still be there for a VERY long time, but over time the negative result of indulging in a trigger would weaken, meaning that you might not binge so dramatically in the future.
Key point: Every time you give in to your desire for sugar, fat, and salt and earn a "food reward" as a result, you are strengthening the biologically conditioned response and it will be harder to break the habit in the future.
Key Point: Your new eating habits must allow you to feel positive, as opposed to negative, hungry, and deprived. So you have to associate the change with something positive to YOU. So for me, it would be that eating healthier will give me more self-confidence to get out a start dating again, while eating poorly guarantees me a self-imposed hermit existence for the rest of my life.
Keys to Reversing the Habit:
1. Be aware of your problem habit, and everything that that triggers it...you will have to pay close attention going forward to avoid those triggers.
2. Engage in competing behaviors, which means that you need to change your routine or responses so that they are incompatible with the trigger. If driving by Wendy's triggers your desire for a Frosty, change your route home. But you need to PLAN how you are going to avoid/deal with known triggers in advance.
3. Formulate thoughts to compete with or quiet the old ones. Instead of thinking to yourself "that looks really good, I'll just have one bite" you need to frame it up as "that is not good for me, and I can't have one bite because it will lead to 20 bites." Consistently view the negative outcomes of the food (weight gain) vs. the perceived positives (fleeting good taste in your mouth).
4. You need to have a support system who can help you recognize and avoid triggers, as well as acknowledge your success in doing so. (like this thread! )
Rules of Disengagement from Food:
Develop a set of rules to help you provide a planned response to a trigger. These help you be aware of alternatives in advance. Rules allow you to better inhibit a behavior than just relying on willpower.
I'll post some more about his "Food Rehab" perspective later if people are interested. |

Bethany: That's really interesting stuff there. It's funny too because before I used to drink a lot of coke (not diet!) at least 1 can a day. But since I weaned myself off it... I find I don't crave it like before. What I did for a while is that when I go out for lunch, I only take the amount of money I need to buy food and none left over to buy a drink so I'd be forced to drink water only. (I'd leave the rest of my cash back at work - it was pretty safe to leave my purse in the cupboard)
Also: congrats for slowly weaning yourself off DC!!! It is an achievement to cut your habit by 1/3! |

I just got these little factoids from the place where I buy my ground chia - hidalgofoods.com
Quote: |
Why would you want to eat Chia?
Chia seeds are said to have:
*2 times the protein of any other seed or grain,
*5 times the calcium of milk, plus boron which is a trace mineral that helps transfer calcium into your bones,
*2 times the amount of potassium as bananas,
*3 times the reported antioxidant strength of blueberries
*3 times more iron than spinach
*copious amounts of omega-3 and omega-6, which are essential fatty acids |
But they left off:
- Great source of fiber
- Low calorie
- Low carb
And they also included some recipes:
Quote: |
Chia Recipe for adding to a box mix
We found that you can add 1 to 2 Tablespoons of chia seed to the liquid in cake mixes, brownie mixes, or other box mixes of your choice. Mix as per the instructions on the box, bake and eat. A simple way of getting the family to eat "healthy" in a special treat.
BASIC CHIA GEL
Chia
Water
Mix 1/3-cup chia seeds to 2 cups water. Stir. This is the 'basic gel' recipe that can be stored in your fridge and used as required.
SWEET SHORTBREAD CHIA
4-5 tbsps chia seeds
2 cups fresh apple juice
2 tbsp lucuma powder
1/4 cup dried mulberries
1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
Soak the chia seeds in the apple juice. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Leave to soak for at least 10 minutes before consuming.
CHIA FRESCA
2 tsp chia seeds
10oz pure water
juice of one lemon or lime
agave syrup or raw honey to taste
This is still a popular drink in modern-day Mexico. Simply stir the ingredients together and enjoy.
FRUITY CHIA
3 small or 2 big apples
8 dates, pits removed
4-5 tbsp chia seeds
1/4 cup dried mulberries
Blend the apples and six of the dates together. Transfer that mixture into a bowl and stir in the chia seeds and mulberries. Chop down the remaining 2 dates into pieces and stir those in too. Leave to soak for at least 10 minutes before consuming.
Bana-paya Chia
1 banana
3/4 cup papaya flesh
6 dried Turkish figs
4-5 tbsp chia, ground
Blend the banana and papaya flesh together. Put the figs in this mixture and leave it to soak overnight. Blend the whole mixture, including the figs, the next day. Stir in the ground chia seed. Serve.
Chia Gel 'Muesli'
1 cup of basic chia gel
2 bananas, mashed with a fork
1 tbsp lucuma powder
1/4 cup raisins
1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
Mix together the ingredients in a bowl with a fork and eat.
Green Chia
8 dried prunes, soaked in 1 pint pure water
1 tbsp spirulina powder
1/3 cup chia seeds
Drain off most of the prune soak water and put the chia seeds to soak in the prune soak water. Blend together the prunes with the spirulina and a small amount of the soak water. Stir the spirulina/prune mixture into the soaked chia seeds. Leave the chia to soak for at least 10 minutes before consuming.
Persi-nana Chia
4-5 tbsp chia seeds
1-2 bananas
1-2 persimmons
1tsp maca
1 tsp cinnamon
handful of goji berries
handful of pumpkin seeds
Blend together the bananas and persimmons. Pour out the mixture into a bowl. Stir in the chia seeds, maca, cinnamon, gojis and pumpkin seeds. Leave the chia to soak for at least 10 minutes before consuming.
Raw 'Rice Pudding'
4-5 tbsp chia seed
2 cups almond milk
raw honey or agave syrup to taste
Combine the ingredients to your taste. Leave the chia to soak for at least 10 minutes before consuming. You can also add other flavours like vanilla, cinnamon or cardamom.
Banana-nut Bread
2 cups vegetable juice pulp (preferably at least half carrot)
8 tbsp ground chia
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
3/4 cup raisins
5 bananas
Mix together the veggie juice pulp and bananas in a food processor. Add in the ground chia and let the food processor run until the seeds are completely mixed in. Transfer the mixture to a bowl with the walnuts and raisins and mix them in thoroughly by hand. Shape into a loaf. For major yumminess, top with 'Cream Cheese' (see below).
Cream Cheese
Flesh of three avocadoes
9 dates
juice of 1 or 2 lemons
big handful of dulse seaweed
Blend.
Strawberry or other Berry Chia Jelly
The best way to make berry chia jelly is to make a portion of chia gel and mix into your favorite jelly using a 50/50 mixture. Example 1/4 cup of chia gel to 1/4 cup of your jelly. This will make 1/2 of jelly for you breakfast toast, with 50% less calories! Easy and good for you.
Chocolate Chia Coconut Bar
1/2 c melted virgin coconut oil
1/3 c Cocoa Powder
1/2 c zylitol or
1/4 c honey
1/3 c coconut milk or pl yogurt 2 tsp chia seeds
1 1/2 c raw coconut flakes
1/4 c almond flakes
1/2 tsp vanilla dash of salt
1/4 c coconut flour
Melt coconut oil in pan on low heat. Remove from heat. Stir in other ingredients in order listed. Spread on one end of jelly roll pan to form a 6 x 11 bar. Cut the bar into 3 x 1 3/4 " servings. Refrigerate until real firm. Put into snack size ziplock bags for a healthy snack on the run.
Chop Suey Noodle Candy
2 Cups semisweet chocolate chips melted 2 Cups butterscotch chips melted 1/4 cup chia seeds one large can chow mein noodles 1 cup copped nuts Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Mix well. Drop by teaspoonsful onto waxed paper. Let stand until set. About 30 servings.
Alegria
6 tablespoons amaranth
4 tablespoons chia seed
1/4 cup dark corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup honey
1/2 stick butter
Cook amaranth one tablespoon at a time in hot oil until all popped. Use a lid on the pan as this step can get wicked with the little hot seeds popping around the stove. Toast chia seeds in the same pan. Lightly grease a 9 x 13 inch pan. Combine the honey, syrup, butter and vanilla in a heavy skillet, heat to boiling, reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring constantly, until mixture turns dark amber and thickens - about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the amaranth and chia. Mix well with a wooden spoon. Spoon mixture into prepared pan, spread evenly, cut into bars and cool.
Chia Seed Muffins
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
3/4 cup sour cream
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1/3 chia seeds
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda cinnomon sugar - mix 1/4 cup sugar with 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bow, cream butter and sugar, Blend in eggs, sour cream and vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine flour, chia seed, salt and baking soda, then add the dry mixture to the creamed mixture. Fill greased muffin tins two-thirds full. Sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar. Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown. Makes 12 muffins.
Chia Herb Couscous
4 teaspoons margarine
2 medium green onion chopped
2 cups chicken broth
4 teaspoon chopped fresh basil or 2 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 Tablespoons chia seed
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 1/3 cups uncooked couscous
1/2 Teaspoon salt
Melt margaine in a 3 quart nonstick saucepan over medium high heat. Cook the garlic and onions in the margarine until the onions are crisp-tender about 4 minutes. Add the chia seeds and lightly toast for about 30 seconds. Stir in the couscous, salt, and if using dried basil add at this time. Add the broth to the saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then remove from the heat. Cover and let stand about 5 minutes. When ready to serve, take a fork and fluff the couscous. Stir in the fresh basil (if fresh is used) and the Parmesan cheese.
Crunchy seed topping for toast - Submit by a customer Robin
In small bowl mix equal volumes of chia, sesame and poppy seeds; I like to add fresh ground flaxseed (I have a small electric seed grinder).
slice your favorite bread and toast lightly; butter it generously (i use margerine). Spinkle with seed mixture and cinnamon/sugar. Return briefly to the oven; remove and eat.

I had to run to the grocery store tonight for litter box liners, and the Diet Coke in the mini-cooler strategically placed next to the checkout was SCREAMING my name.
I started having a little internal chat with myself...just like they mentioned in the book above. "Oh...Diet Coke! No, it's too late for caffeine. But look...they have caffeine-free Diet Coke!" But then I put my foot down and used one of my rules I put into place, which is that caffeine-free DC is a WASTE of $$$, and the sodium and toxins will contribute to bloating. NO caffeine-free DC!!
And then I came home and had some cranberry water with chia seed mixed in.
One temptation averted....many more to come, sigh. |

Just an FYI that I will probably be MIA until after May 15th due to a major project deadline and work travel.
A quick update...I am still sticking to my healthy diet, though I am still not off the Diet Coke. Last night I had a total of 2 hours worth of sleep, and the caffeine was not optional.
But after the 15th things will slow down a bit and I will be completely dropping the DC and doing the Detox after 7 days on the Prequel. |

I am finally back down to my low weight from January...now I need to get back to my pre-surgery weight from July '07.
I redid my goals so that I can feel successful sooner and on multiple occasions.
Goal 1 - Pre-Surgery weight (10.5lbs to go)
Goal 2 - Realistic Goal (16.5 lbs to go)
Goal 3 - Stretch Goal (21.5lbs to go)
I have to admit that reading the book above about how even one taste of something loaded with sugar+fat+salt can trigger a downward spiral is greatly influencing me (in a good way) at the moment. Of course we'll see if I am able to stick to that when I have to dine with clients for 2 full days next week. |

FYI on the cran-water (4oz of pure unsweetened cranberry juice + 28oz of water)...you do NOT want to exceed 64oz a day (32 oz may be better), and it MUST be parnered with a lot of plain water as well.
I drank the 32oz and did NOT do the additional water as well. The diuretic aspects of the cra-water combined with the dehydrating effect of the caffeine in my Diet Coke caused my skin to become very dehydrated...I actually developed cracks in my lips.
Fortunately, I quickly realized what was happening and started power drinking regular water as well. Things are back to normal now, thank goodness. |

Down .5lb today....10 lbs to go for Goal 1.
I am going to try and make sure that I use my chi machine today to keep my lymphatic fluid flowing...I read in the Fat Flush Detox book that it is critical for weightloss, since that helps shuttle the fat and toxins out of your body.
Plans for the next couple of weeks:
Week of 5/11 - Traveling for work, but will stay focused on clean eating.
Week of 4/18 - Do the 7 day Prequel to the one day fast (actually start on 5/17)
5/24 - Do the one day fast
Week of 5/25 - Break the fast with the 3 day protocol, and go back to the Prequal diet so that I can repeat the fast in a coupel of weeks. |

Bethany: I really like Chia too. I make a sort of tapioca pudding with it.
I need to lose 5-10 lbs before summer. I've been eating way too much recently. I went on a cruise on Spring break and then with the end of school and events overwork and boredom eating I've blossomed. I just tried on the bathing suits I wore 6 weeks ago and my belly is busting out.
SUMMER IS COMING I NEED TO EAT RIGHT AGAIN.
I know that I can do it I just feel so tired. |

Is the tiredness recent, or has it been present for a while? You may want to increase your Vit D and your B12...those both contribute greatly to fatigue. You might also need to have your thyroid checked...the Vit D and starting thyroid meds got me out of bed after a year of doing nothing but sleeping.
My doctor has me take a TON of supplements...at one point it was over 60 pills a day. I hated taking all of them and would get lazy, but I would feel like crap when I stopped.
Now I have some non-pill versions that I take which makes it much more tolerable for me, thank goodness. |

I have to give myself a little pat on the back...today was HORRIBLY stressful and I had a very brief moment where I considered going off my clean eating plan. But I shelved it, and carried on.
I am also doing better at eating every 3 hours, though I may have to break down and buy a timer since I have a tendency to forget to eat that frequently
And to ensure that I don't forget my supplements, I moved them out of my kitchen and lined them up on my desk (which I spend WAY too much time at). Now I see them all day, and I haven't forgotten once since I moved them. |

Bethany,
Re: Aspartame
http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/dangers.htm
"According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame:(2) Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson's disease, alzheimer's, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes."
Didn't you say you have fibromyalgia?
(You've been forewarned. I am starting a folder on my laptop specifically titled 'Aspartame'. I find myself preaching about it so much and I can never find the background to back up my claims. Now I'll have it.) |
