I saw a very interesting recipe for this on the DIY skincare forum, that I am absoultely dying to try out. However, the recipe calls for 70% alcohol, and being in the UK, we are unable to purchase this in any stores (chemists included!). I have asked almost everywhere I possibly could, and I tell you it's just not available to purchase. The nearest thing available is 'surgical spirit' and I asked one of the chemists if that could be used on the skin, and was told that I could, but that this would 'harden' the skin.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could use instead / as a substiture for the alcohol? |

If you want to use something alcohol based, then you could go with vodka. If not, try witch hazel.
Make up a small batch to see if you like the resultant product before you invest a lot of time & ingredients into a greater volume. |

This question came up before (see this link: http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=3068&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=homemade+tendskin). The 70% alcohol is also called “rubbing alcohol” or Isopropyl Alcohol. Mabsy says in Oz it’s also called Isocol. I really can’t understand why they don’t sell it over there – it’s not like it’s used for drinking or anything!! Over here, they sell it in the ‘first aid’ aisle because it’s used as a disinfectant, like hydrogen peroxide or the like.
I don’t know the rules and regulations, but if you can’t buy the rubbing alcohol in England, maybe you could order it online from somewhere likewww.drugstore.com and have it shipped to you? Or maybe you have a friend in the U.S. who could buy a bottle and mail it to you. The rubbing alcohol itself is less than a dollar, but the shipping would be around $4.85USD (minimum ‘flat-fee’ shipping charge to UK, prices go up from there based on weight). |

Definitely check the first-aid isle of the chemist (or even supermarket) and look for rubbing alcohol like Carrie mentioned.
I just did a search for "rubbing alcohol" on UK sites and it's mentioned a fair bit. You should be able to find it somewhere then |
