i think chemicals are bad for skin
sometimes, it is just stupid not to protect (india, egypt etc sun is too crazy hot and powerful) but generally i think best to avoid worst hours and use sparingly... i am also now trying natural sunscreens by burts bees...
works and less damaging

This is alarming.

I currently use La Roche POsay spf 50 fluid, PPD 28.

I reapply frequently, usually every two hours, when I am out. I will start every hour now.

Does frequent reapplication prevent the sunscreen that has broken down from creating free radicals?

I used to absolutely hate wearing sunscreens due to the same reasons as some of you have cited. But I was completely sold after a couple of months of daily sunscreen wear in my early 20s which visibly improved the condition of my acne prone skin then, which was also probably subjected to some harsh treatments (I was not quite skin savvy then and the Internet was not so developed yet)

So now, I balk at not wearing any sunscreen even if I'm running out for a short errand. I will only go without sunscreen if I'm in the dark or indoors, regardless of sun exposure; I know some people wear sunscreens even when they're indoors as they get sunshine as well, but I think that's just a tad too much for me. I also don't reapply in the day unless I happen to come home and have my makeup taken off.

I've read on the makeupalley board that using Vit C under sunscreens will enhance their efficacy or something though. Since Vit C helps with free radical protection, I suppose it'll be logical to wear a Vit C product under a sunscreen? I'm not a skincare expert so will be great if someone can comment on this!

My answer: Use a PHYSICAL sunscreen with zinc oxide, every day. This article was posted before, actually. But I have to say it again, the part where they guess that zinc oxide could be dangerous is based on ZERO evidence and is ridiculous.

I agree with you. Many people around me still with good skin even if they are not young told me the only things they think it's useful for skincare are sunscreen and preserve moisture。

There's a new photostabilizer - SolaStay S1 (INCI: Ethylhexyl methoxycrylene) - that's supposed to take care of this problem in chemical sunscreens. I was just reading about this recently and have begun searching for sunscreens with this ingredient but haven't found any yet. This is where I read about it: http://www.happi.com/articles/2009/10/sunscreen-photostability-101

This site also has a summary of the 12th Annual Sun Care Symposium sponsored by the Florida Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists which has what I think is interesting information about sunscreens and ingredients: http://www.happi.com/articles/2009/10/heated-debate-sparks-the-sunscreen-symposium

I'm definitely not giving up my physical sunscreen (Devita) but I'm glad to know now that using my homemade C E Ferulic before my sunscreen application, is fighting the free radicals that may or may not be kicking in! I would never go without sunscreen no matter what.

Thanks for those links. Very interesting reading. It's reassuring to know that nanoparticles are probably not as "evil" as some websites make them out to be. I think they do creep into quite a few of the physical sunscreens on the market especially those zinc oxide sunscreens that are more cosmetically elegant.

Thanks so much for those links and reading. All very interesting. I'd heard the buzz about the chemical sunscreens being just as bad as they are good, but not the physical. And I always use physical when I can.

What makes me mad is people like Paula Begouin who knock a product because it doesn't have sunscreen. What short-sighted thinking. I prefer to pick and use my own sunscreen on top of a simple moisturizer because I've always prefered the physical barriers. Paula can't seem to figure that out.

I too, after spending my youth destroying my skin in the sun, won't go out without a good sunscreen. I spend so much time in the sun even now (horses), that it would be skin-icide not to use a sun block. And it doesn't take but one day forgetting to put something on to remind me how fast I can reverse all my anti-aging efforts. Until there's something better, I'm sticking with my physical sunblocks.

I use sun hat whenever possible. There are sun hats that have SPF protection. I don't like sun screens. They are oily and make my skin feel like clogged.

Interesting - and scary. I guess I will try that Neutrogena recommended above, colorblind's stuff looks good but it's pricey and I'm from NY and have to pay their tax on it as well.

I think for now, I'll up my Isomers sunscreen (the formulator says they encapsulate the zinc oxide in tiny glass capsules) and mix in a little anti-oxidant.

There needs to be more "press on this issue to force the big sunscreen companies to reformulate to address this issue.
