| I've been using Ortho-evra for 3 years now...i woke up and my mom informed me that on the news they reported 12 girls in their late teens/early 20s (I am 20...) dying of strokes and blood clots from using the same birth control. I know all birth controls contain these risks...and i wonder if the girls had healthy lifestyles..or chose to smoke, which increases the chances of blood clots and stroke. Either way I'm definitely considering getting off birth control, though its really hard when you are in a long term relationship and other forms of control don't quite work as well. Maybe i'll consider the pill. |

| It is frightening isn't it. Being 39 I've been on a few pill's that have had scare's over the years. I stopped taking the pill in January this year and I do worry about protection. My doctor recommended I come off it because of the risks and my age...But I'm not having a coil or being Sterilised!!! |

| I have heard that their was a higher risk with ortho-evra, but it is probably best to discuss this with your doc. I have used ortho-trycyclen for almost 10yrs and nuva-ring for the past year. I do have one risk factor and that is chronic migraines. I think as with any medication, it is best to weigh the risks and benefits with your doctor. |

| What is the nuva-ring? Any hormones? Any side effects? I have a copper IUD right now and it is just not working for me. |

Nuvaring has the same hormones as the pill, but in a lower concentration. It is used for three weeks at a time (so you don't have to worry about forgetting the pill) Here is the website...

| Have you had any side effects from the nuvaring? I'm leary about hormone stuff..I have really bad reactions to the pill so I avoid anything with hormones. |

| I havent had any reactions from ortho evra; the only reason i decided to choose that form of birth control was because you only put a patch on once a week, and it claimed that it had the same low percentage of hormones as any other pill out there. Also, studies showed that people had a higher chance of getting pregnant on the pill than with the patch. Confusion indeed. |

| I didn't have any reactions with the pill or nuvaring. Talk to your OB and you should be able to get a sample one to try. |

Ortho-Evra is the contains combo. hormones, the same as the Pill, except it's adminstered transdermally, not orally. Some people have medical histories which would warrant that they not use hormonal methods of birth control: high blood pressure, liver disease, etc. Also, some third-generation progesterones have been more apt to causing blood clots in some people.
If you're monitored by your doctor, and have no previous history of medical concerns, don't worry. If Ortho-Evra was unsafe, and hadn't been through trial studies, the American FDA and Health Canada would never have approved it's manufacturing.

| Is there a reason a person with high blood pressure or liver disease shouldnt take birth control? Would it increase risk of blood clots or something? From what i know, my health is fine... |

| Definitely talk to your doctor. But if you're interested in staying on hormonal BC I'd highly recommend the Nuvaring. I tried a variety of pills and Ortho Evra, and had side effects (moodiness, nauseau the first day, etc.) with all of them. Plus, the forgetfulness factor w/ the pill. I have not had ANY problems w/ Nuvaring and I've been using it for over a year. Also, if you're concerned... it's soooo much smaller and less noticable than a diaphragm, and when you're having "relations" it's not a hindrance at all. |

| I LOVED the NuvaRing, but I stopped using it since I got my first UTI ever while on it . . . I was sad, it was my favorite method. So easy. I didn't take it out during sex and maybe doing so would have prevented the UTI, maybe not. It was great not to have to think about it for three weeks at a stretch. |
