so the tongue-in-cheek lesson to be learned: -- to help increase one's self-esteem, one needs to spend alot of time around strangers. "...strangers were much kinder" 
seriously, though, thanks, Cookie, for the good *think* discussion - there are really so many facets of thought that race through the brain re: this study, aren't there... some that come quickly to mind --
1 - women may tend to view themselves as a one-dimensional image as opposed to an image that's multi-dimensional with a personality including their moods, attitudes and behaviors
2 - perhaps women just don't tend to trust the image they project to others
3 - women may just simply seem to be more discriminating and choosy about their own looks
it sure is a good think, though |

Kath- I think the comment you made about one- dimensional vs multi-dimensional is interesting. We have all met women who would never win a beauty contest but they are so confident and hold themselves in such a way that people can't help but be attracted to them. Verses a person who doesn't make eye contact. Shoulders are slummed over. Doesn't believe in themselves and they project that image outward so people stay away.
We have all heard the saying that beauty is only skin deep. It has been proven in many studies that attractive people are treated better overall then less attractive people but I think the confidence that you have in yourself can override some of that. |

^ yep, self-confidence = positive self-esteem = healthy (in my book)
Of course, women do spend $7 billion a year on cosmetics and other enhancements so other people will notice them. I'm not one to knock what makes women feel happy and what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. All in all, often times for me, it can become tedious and hypocritical to analyze.
