Hi all,

Which alcohol would you use to dilute certain ingredients like ferulic acid or salicylic acid etc. :

- alcohol denat. 96%
- isopropanol (INCI: Ethyl alcohol, Isopropyl alcohol) 98%
- ethanol 96%
- Isopropylalcohol IPA 99,8%

or is even
- Isopropylalcohol 70% sufficient?

for face products ?

Do you still think, that alcohol is bad bad bad for skin ? (this meme is still so incorporated by many beauty blogger... Rolling Eyes)

Would you still consider buying a product where alcohol is listed as INCI on second place? When all other ingredients are very good actives and humectants?

Thank you!

You can use Propylene glycol or vodka. Some think Propylene glycol to be not entirely safe but it's in literally everything..even eye drops..And it's used in SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic .

You may use the following one to replace Propylene glycol.

Very good. That's what I'll be getting when I use up the rest of my propylene glycol (although I've had no irritation).

Hi,

I have propylene glycol.

Is it equivalent to alcohol 1=1 in formulations ?

It`s just I read a post from a skincare formulator that he prefers alcohol over propylene glycol as it is the lesser evil (especially if it`s gonna be a spray product)

So after I did some little research I`m not so sceptical against alcohol anymore.
here e.g.:

"The repetitive use of different alcohol-based hand rubs was shown to not significantly change transepidermal water loss, dermal water content or the sebum content of the skin [98]. The potential of ethanol-containing hand rubs to cause skin irritation was tested using single and repetitive patch tests and wash tests. No significant change in skin barrier or erythema was induced, whereas skin hydration decreased significantly. The wash tests demonstrated that alcohol application caused significantly less skin irritation than washing with a detergent. Even on previously irritated skin, ethanol did not enhance irritation. Alcohol-based hand rubs cause less skin irritation than hand washing, and are therefore preferred for hand hygiene from the dermatological point of view" ["Safety evaluation of topical applications of ethanol on the skin and inside the oral cavity" on pubmed] (I`m not allowed to post links)

Besides alcohol evaporates too fast to do real damage: "...it also dries really quickly...so the amount of time it's on your skin (and able to disrupt the skin) is limited. There's a difference between pure alcohol applied to the skin, and alcohol mixed with emollients on the skin. The emollients help reduce some of the drying effects of the alcohol, and the alcohol helps the emollients spread faster" (kindofstephen on reddit)

I like the fact that PG also enhances penetration, but so does alcohol;

So what do you think?

Can I use both propylene glycol and alcohol for synergistic effects ?

I'm not necessarily a big fan of Paula Begoun and I disagree with her on many things but on the subject of alcohol I tend to agree based on my own experiences.
She says things like ethanol,
or SD alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or alcohol denat (denatured alcohol) erode the skin barrier and I think she's right.
(She is a fan of "fattier" alcohols like cetyl, stearyl, and cetearyl.)
I just prefer personally not to use alcohol if I can help it.
