My husband of three years just retired three months ago. The company approached him with a severance pkg., (either take it, or get forced-out). He was not planning on retiring; neither one of us was ready. My new marriage is now highlighted with a ever-present, bored, dependent man. He has no hobbies, and no close friends. The ONLY social contacts he has are his daughter and grandkids. He won't do ANYTHING alone. My part time job provides me with time away, but the minute I'm home, he's hovering. It's gotten soo bad that I'm secluding myself in a room with a "Do Not Disturn" sign posted on the door, with the excuse of being sick.  |

My stepfather is 80 and retired years ago,
he was married to my mother until recently.
And they would play tennis every day and he also plays tennis with his neighbours when my mom was not around.
My mom would just leave for weeks at a time, so he had other hobbies.
He also plays chess with people, but at night when I was visiting, I always see him play with an electronic chess board.
He also goes to the movies by himself or with friends a couple times a week. |

I know exactly what you mean. My husband is a good man who loves me dearly, but I need space. If I could have even two mornings a week free, I would be happy. He won't travel without me, so my chances of ever having any time alone are nil.
He tried volunteer work but quickly quit because he felt it was a 'thankless task'. |

Same situation here, he won't travel without me, but I have found a solution because now I would travel without him.  And I love traveling. Sometimes finding the right people to go travel with so I don't have to pay the single supplement may be an issue I need to resolve though. |

Moochez, that sounds like a good idea. I go visit my family twice a year it does help me cope.
My husband was an executive with an international company, is a native New Yorker, and traveled the world when he was working. I don't know how he became so 'attached'. |
