I'm using a serum that contains 5% of an extract which is 40% grain alcohol (ethanol) by volume twice a day. I also use a separate serum containing low molecular weight hyalauronic acid twice daily. Still, the alcohol in my other serum is obviously drying out my skin and making it flake.
As a solution, I want to add glycerin and cetearyl alcohol to my ethanol-containing serum for moisture. Glycerin is straight forward - I can just mix that right in, but I'm not sure how to add cetearyl alcohol. I know it's usually part of a heated oil phase, but my serum doesn't have any oil and I don't want to add oil to it. Also, I don't want to heat my solution altogether because my serum also contains amino acids and I'm sure they are pretty heat labile.
Can anyone tell me how to go about adding cetearyl alcohol to this serum? Thanks so much and sorry for the long message, just wanted everything to be clear. |

| No one knows? If not, is there anything else I can add besides a fatty alcohol that'll neutralize the drying effects of the ethanol? Would making the solution 20% glycerin suffice? |

| You cannot add cetyl to water only serum, as it is oil soluble. Is it diy serum? If you add anything to your serum the potency will reduce as the %% was calculated for particular total amount and by adding something you're increasing the total amount. Also it is difficult to advise without knowing the formula, this possibly why no one answered. |

Why Cetearyl Alcohol?
It is waxy pellets that is used to form a CREAM. You need to warm the oil/ water ingredients to 55 degree Celcius and the resulting product will be a CREAM, NOT serum |

Oh okay - I was just wondering if there was any possible way I could get around adding oil to my serum in order to add in the cetyl, but I guess not. 
And yes, of course the potency of other ingredients will be reduced if I simply add more of something else. I was going to reduce the same amount of water as the amount of cetyl I would have added.
I appreciate your response. Thank you! I guess I will just suck it up and make the oil-containing cream as the serum is just too drying. |

I understand what you're saying I was using the word serum because that is what I currently have now, but yes - I did wish to thicken the formula so I could have something more moisturizing.
As to why cetearyl alcohol, well, I wanted something moisturizing to counteract the dryness of the grain alcohol, so I looked up moisturizing alchohols. Do you think the glycerin on its own would be enough then? |

| Opps, forgot to add this. The amino acid I was referring to is proline. That's why I was afraid of having to heat it to add the oil. I didn't know if the proline would denature. |
