AHHH! I went to wash my face with my homemade DHCC and there was MOLD in it! Shock I had noticed that it was starting to look a bit different over the past few days, but i continued to use it cuz i thought maybe the oil was just soaking in more or something?!
Has anyone else had this happen? I had just started to wonder about bacteria growth in my ACV toner so i had stopped using that.
What can I do about this? Can it be prevented, should I add some kind of preservative? The woman at the health food store where I bought my EOs said the vitamin C did this.

I've also had this happen in the few batches that I've made! I wondered if maybe I should make half batches instead. I figure, I'm going by the recipe in the DIY thread, so surely other people are experiencing mold in their DHCC too?

are you keeping it in the refrigerator??? I do, and haven't had that problem yet.

nope, i was just keeping it in the bathroom cabinet! I had read somewhere it was ok to do that. I just made a half batch this time, so maybe i'll try keeping it in the fridge and see how it goes.

I made a big batch about a month ago...I put them in small tupperware type containers and put them all in the refrig. I have 4 left, I checked them all after my last post...no mold and no funny smells.

Confused My DHCC hasn't done this either...but then again I use mine as a body cleanser, so it doesn't last very long. Laughing

Ooo, that's a good idea! I've got a bunch of those little tupperwares that are pretty much too small for anything, but they'd be great to store the DHCC in and keep one in the bathroom and the rest in the fridge until you're ready to use them! Brilliant Very Happy

I went out and bought a bunch of little tupperware containers, and made a big batch of DHCC and put it in the fridge. And since I had a bunch of seperate containers, i added different EO's into each of them. So, then it will help me experiment so more Smile

You can try adding grapefruit seed extract since this is a natural preservative. I add this too most of my homemade stuff. I also sometimes use grapefruit seed extract straight to wash my face with so it shouldn't be a problem added to a face wash. Storing it in the fridge sounds like a good idea though.

I'm not too sure about whether I am overly sensitive to grapeseed extract or not. It's one of the ingredients in Carley's Clear Skin Treatment, and I reacted negatively to that. I've also read that it could be considered an irritant. PhoebesMeow, would you say your skin is sensitive at all?

Yes, I would say my skin is sensitive. When I first starting using grapefruit extract, I gave myself chemical burn! Ooooow I was in so much pain falling asleep that night. I haven't had that problem since, I make sure to mix it with water (put it on a damp face) and didn't leave it on nearly as long as I did the time I burned myself. Luckily the next day my skin was back to normal so it wasn't a big deal. So if you're just adding it to a cleanser I don't think it would be that big a deal, but test it to a small amount of your cleanser first so you don't ruin a whole batch. I added grapefruit extract to my ACV toner (just for the heck of it since I figured nothing in there could really go bad anyway). So that sits on my skin and I have not had any issues with it. I only added a very small amount though. The kind I use is called ProSeed Grapefruit Seed Extract and it is 60% vegetable glycerine and 40% grapefruit. The website is http://imhotepinc.com/product1.html
I bought mine at a local health food store. When I was in Japan I noticed a lot of stuff had grapefruit extract in it as a preservative. Maybe that was just the stuff I happened to be looking at but I would assume if it's used in a small amounts that most people wouldn't have reactions to it since I saw it so frequently.

Umm...I hope that lady wasn't saying the vitamin C CAUSED the mold...because that is ridiculous. It is just a form of ascorbic acid which is a preservative. I would definitely add that in as a preservative and it's good for your skin too!
