I am looking into buying a puppy. (I know, I'm crazy!)  But I came across this breed, the Toy Rat Terrier (also called a Feist) and they are soooooo cute!  But I don't know anybody that has one. Has anyone had any experience with these dogs? What is their temperament like? How big do they really get? Anyone?

| Hi have you had dogs before? I have a pair of 1yo old poodles and they are great fun. Someone at the dog park we go to has a small Rat Terrier. It is very playful. If you don't work at home I'd suggest getting 2 also although if it's your first dog that might be too much. The high energy breeds can be destructive when lonely. |

Hi Sharky,
I had a dog when I was young, (from a puppy) but haven't had one in a while. I don't work at home, but can come home during lunch, etc. if I need to. Also, my s/o is usually at home when I'm not. I don't know about getting 2 puppies - might be too much! That is, unless, you're offering to come over & pet sit! |

They are so adorable! I have a friend who has two little rat terriers, and they are fun. They are playful, fun-loving doggies.....great with people, kids, other dogs....what really amazed me about these little critters is how high they can jump! And they're very hyper, which just adds to the cuteness. She had one, and got the second just because she felt that he needed a buddy to play with.

I like to look at the club websites for a breed, they're usually really helpful if you have questions and concerns

I advise you to do a lot of research about the breed before getting a puppy. My friend got a beagle in a little apartment...plus my friend is rather..umm..lazy so this hyper dog is 2 and still not trained and destroys everything. Also look for a reputable breeder. The club above will usually have listings.
Expect to fill out a questionnaire/application. I personally wouldn't buy from a breeder who did not care enough to ask the questions. Also ask about any guarantees, diet, etc. I have a few friends that maintain contact with their dog breeder for health, training, and even dog social parties.

| Thanks everybody! I have been researching RAtties for a couple of months. I was just wondering if anyone had any first-hand experiences with them. I know it'll be a lot of work (like having a baby!), but it'll be worth it! I'll keep you all updated through the adoption process. Thanks for the advice! |
