I've used it as an astringent/toner and it's helped me in the past when I had bad acne. |

Hi Thatgirl,
There are two types of Witch Hazel ... one has Witch Hazel extract mixed with alcohol ... the has Witch Hazel mixed with aloe vera.
The choice of which one is best really depends upon how your skin reacts to alcohol. Some people find that Witch Hazel with alcohol works well ... but others find that the alcohol makes their skin too dry, at least with the top layers of skin ... this can lead to an imbalance where one's skin is both oily with dry flakey bits.
The Witch Hazel that's mixed with aloe vera is much more expensive than the one with alcohol.

I use the witch hazel without alcohol as a toner and it is perfect for my oily skin, it acts as an astringent and an antiseptic for any outbreaks.
Carekate mentioned in one of her posts that the whole point of using a toner is to help the skin maintain a correct PH after cleansing.
If I have a cystic acne outbreak I always dab on some witch hazel followed by Tea Tree Oil. |

witch hazel is also available as pure straight hydrosol which does not contain any additives (ie. alcohol, aloe, preservatives etc.). you just have to be sure to find it from a reputable seller because, just as with all other pure hydrosols, it is perishable.
i've found the hydrosol to not be drying at all, but it does still have an astringent effect.

Yes, I use Dickensons now to, and it works fine.
I have used witch hazel to wash my skin each night since I was 12. Originally I was able to buy it double distilled in a little brown bottle from the chemist/pharmacy. If it was too strong I would dilute half with water. Then it did not contain added alcohol. Now it is hard to find commercial brands without it. i would advise using the one with the lowest alcohol content you can find.
btw for many years I had compliments on me skin, from my witch hazel and oil of ulan/olay regime. Norwegian genes may have helped, and of course i was much younger! I have now got my 13 year to use that same regime. |

I've been using Dickenson's for years with good results. I think Thayer's brand is without alcohol, but I've never tried it. |
