What causes acne scars

well, im infering that acne scars = that pit looking like thing on your skin so...

What makes those? is it just trying to pop and squeeze the pimples that makes those?

Yes, it is picking them that causes the scarring. If you left them alone (who could do that)..they would not scar. The key (for me at least) is when I do decide to pick them (only when they are ready)..is to pick it gently and then LEAVE IT ALONE. I have a bad habit of thinking I can make it go away faster by removing the scab too! (I know grose, sorry). The bigger the damage, the bigger or deeper the scar. You can actually damage the skin, which that is what you are doing and pits can come from it.

While I agree that picking/popping will lead to scarring, I've also had large cystic pimples that I've exercised super-human restraint with (i.e. NO picking or popping or fiddling with at all) and they've still scarred Sad

Everyone's skin is different as we've all learned, and I think some people just don't heal as well or as quickly, and are more prone to scarring. I am unfortunately one of them.

That said, I have found that the aspirin mask, and Dr. Hauschka's Rejeuvenating mask (which I use more as a cream treatment than a mask--put it on after toner, before normalizing day oil, and leave on all day) have helped reduce the discoloration from some of my scars. Not holy grail... but they seem to help.

I know, we all have different skin. Why can't we all have PERFECT SKIN? Try Merderma. It has helped with some of my scaring and redness. It seems to take the redness out rather quickly.

Bergquis, that's a great idea. I don't know why I haven't tried Mederma... I have it from when I had a surgery and I've used it on those doctor-made scars (with decent results), but never thought to use it on my acne ones.

If we all had perfect skin, it'd be wonderful, but then what would we do with all the time we spend on our quest for perfect skin and on EDS?

Zinc supplements should speed up the healing process and help reduce any scarring.
Also a fake tanning product may help to make them less noticeable and I know from my last suggestion you will all go nuts, but 10 mins spent in the sun on a nice day helps too.
I am by no means advocating sunbathing though.

Yea, i dont have cystic acne, just regular, but i have leftover redness from past pimples D:.

But i go outside alot when its warm out, so that helps my skin alot too doesn it?

Yup Cystic acne causes hyperpigmentation too... Keep it hydrated because if it dries up to fast, it can scar... Mario Badescu's drying lotion is targeted for cystic acne. I find that it can sink the bump down without the drying feeling. Then once the bump is down, just go do the Aspirin masks and exfoliate, if you're patient, scar should fade out eventually Smile

I've used it in the past, although admittedly not with any real consistency, and never experienced any sort of improvement.

I'd like to try it on the scars on my chest/back from body acne (I posted about this earlier yesterday).

I'm also kind of interested in using either Retin A or glycolic on these areas but don't know if I can afford to cover that surface area with those products.

For facial acne, I have had some success with a combination of Retin A, glycolic acid, and professional microdermabrasion. Nothing has made them disappear but they are less noticeable.

I'm not sure what the exact mechanism is, but in my own case, the really long-lived, big zits that stay around forever and ever tend to be the ones that leave marks. I just know when I spot one of those monsters that I can expect to see traces of him for months to come Crying or Very sad

I've also heard that BP can contribute to scarring but am not convinced, myself.

for me Mederma worked for the scar in my knee. The fresher the scar the faster it will fade.... I do not like the smell though... Laughing

scars form when the dermis has been damaged significantly, i.e. when we sit there for ages trying to squeeze a pimple and nothing comes out but you know there is something there so you keep trying. retinol based products used on top of the scar itself can help. i know someone who used one such product after she was bitten on her upper lip by her dog and now you can barely see a thing (and it was a pretty nasty bite)

Im currently using Julie Robins perfect complexion Apeel for my scars, It has helped alot. My nodules scar even if i dont do anything at all. Its a retinol based peel and its just like rubbing lotion in the skin. 3-4days later the scar has either peeled faded or is completely gone. I hope it helps. Im still learning from all you ladies
