Hello Everyone and Happy New Year!
I'm new to the site and have a few concerns about my skincare routine. I'm 26 and I've always had fine skin with a few breakouts right before my cycle every month. However, my skin wasn't great (uneven, a bit dull) so I started getting facials about 5 months ago.
I also started using the products they recommend. I'm using the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel, Daily Microfoliant, Gentle Cream Exfoliant, and Active Moist. The problem is I'm just not impressed. If anything, my skin is worse than when I started. One other potential issue is that I started using the Bare Minerals foundation shortly after and I think that made my skin breakout. I've since stopped using it and my skin is clearing up but for a while there, it was worse than it's ever been. And I'm fair so I scar easily. So, basically, I feel like I've been spending more money and time on my skin that ever before, yet it's worse than it's ever been. Is is just that these products are not working for me and I need to find something else (MD Formulations is the only other option at this salon)? Has anyone else had adverse effects from any of these products because I'm not impressed. I'm just so frustrated b/c I spent all this money and I'm worse off than I started. I even went to a dermatologist for a prescription and I'm tempted to revert back to using cheap OTC products like Clean and Clear, etc. They seemed to be working better and cost a whole lot less. But, I'd rather use the better products but get results! Help someone!

Hi, Minmaggie.

A few years ago, I tried an assortment of Dermalogica products because they were highly recommended at a spa for treating monthly breakouts. And like they did with you, they made my skin worse.

Over a period of years, I also tried other high-quality professional products like DDF, Murad and MD Formulations, along with an assortment of products from dermatologists. My skin reacted badly to everything, but it was always worse with products designed for treating acne.

In the last couple of weeks, I did a ton of research on skincare ingredients. I came across a logical explanation for why my skin was misbehaving for so many years: Skin has a "natural defense barrier." It protects itself from environmental irritations, among other things. A healthy defense barrier has the right mix of natural oils, lipids, proteins, etc. But if you use products that are wrong for your skin, you can cause the barrier to become unbalanced and dysfunctional. (For example, using products that are too drying for you or contain ingredients you're allergic to.)

My skin drastically improved after I found products with ingredients that didn't clog my pores or cause irritation, and I was finally able to restore the proper moisture balance. Estee Lauder's Verite Cleanser worked great because, unlike most cleasers, it rinses off competely (no irritating residue.) I also discovered I could tolerate Orlane's Smoothing Cream for sensitive skin. My skin has been healed so well, I don't break out anymore, and I can use other product lines. (Decleor oils and balms are my current fave!)

Maybe your skin's "natural defense barrier" was disrupted by using acne products. If so, a sensitive skin line might help it heal and normalize to the point where you don't break out anymore.

I hope this helps. Wink

Alohagirl,

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. I greatly appreciate it! It seems to make sense and that probably is what is causing my problems; I'm sure I've stripped my skin of its natural moisture balance from years of using OTC products and not much moisturizer. I'll just be perisistent and try to find what works!

Thanks again Smile
