Hi All,
I found you around two weeks ago and have been fascinated ever since. I'm already converted to OCM, it's great, it's made a difference.
I love the aspirin mask too, that definately helps.
I would really like to make my own Vitamin C Serum. But I noticed one of the ingredients PG, my DH said "That's anti-freeze". I went to a healthfood shop and asked if they sold it and she told me "I shouldn't put that one my skin". So as far as I can tell here the only other options are distilled water and glycerine. I read that glycerine isn't great for greasy skin and I'm definately a bit oily at times.
So in a longwinded lead up, what else could I mix the Vitamin C into? I'm in Australia and not wanting to buy off the internet.
Thanks heaps for all your help so far.

I haven't ordered the propylene glycol yet, but did find on Makeup Alley, I believe, someone suggested KY Ultra gel.. That is the 2nd ingredient in that.. So I really doubt it's anti freeze and if it's not going to hurt 'there' it's not gonna hurt your face...LOL That's what I've been using till I can oder the plain PG... I didn't want to wait... I have no complaints or issues at all with using the gel... |

Really KY? Do you just put some Vit C powder in the gel and let it dissolve or dissolve it in some distilled water first?
My DH works with chemicals and he said that's what it was. I guess it's used in far less concentrations in products. I really didn't have an issue with it. But it does look like it's hard to get unless you buy off the net and I'd rather not.
I had thought about putting it in some oil of some sort, but not sure if it would dissolve.
Thanks for your reply. I did try to search the forum for answers, but didn't find much.
I guess in the end I could just use the distilled water even, but I was hoping for something with more guts to it.

Starkers, I just use Carekates recipe, {posted in the DIY thread} but instead of the straight PG, which yes, it seems so far, no pharmacy carries {not even compounding ones, but they all said they would order it for me} I use the KY ULTRA gel in it's place... It has to be the KY ULTRA gel tho...
Sorry I didn't mean to doubt your husband, I'd say you're right.. If it is that, then the amount has to be so small..
I have a small funnel that I use to get in all in my cobalt colored bottle, with no spillage... I add the distilled water, Vic C crystals and KY, then shake it good, and it disolves right away.. I do keep shaking it every so often just for good measure... And also before every use... I also plan on getting some Hyaluronic Acid in liquid form, to add to it at some point, possibly even try adding Vit E oil.. Even tho it's an oil, I think if I shake it good before each use, it will be OK.. Anyone have any experience with adding Vit E???
Hope that helps Starkers...

I've been tormenting myself with the same thought. My old favorite vitamin c serum - vivier is also loaded with propylene glycol. Our local whole foods has hylauric acid so you could try a health food store to see if they carry it. You can also use the c serum only at night and use glycerin instead. I'm also oily so using glycerin as the base during the day is not an option. |

I use Cellular Skin Rx C+ Firming serum and it is l-ascorbic acid and propylene glycol. It's been almost two years since I started using it and it has worked very well. I'm combo skin and it soaks right in - no residue or oiliness. I have yet to see any ill effects after all this time. Propylene glycol is used in many food products as well as skincare products and approved by the FDA for use in both types of products. I think antifreeze is ethylene glycol...? And obviously, you wouldn't want to ingest large quantities of that... |

Betterat40,
I think you are right about anti freeze being ethylene glycol... I haven't done a search, but that does sound right...
I've tried every health food/vitamin store {Whole Foods, Wild Oats to name 2} and a couple compounding pharmacys for the propylene glycol and they don't carry it, nor do the carry the liquid HA, only the caps that I buy for lip plumping... But as with the PG, they said they would order it in for me... |

In the bottle of my PG I bought from Walmart, it says...DONT use on skin!!! when i first tried to make the serum, i put alittle on my neck...and it started itching and pinching me alot! and it became really red...not sure if its the l-ascorbic acid concentration was too high or the PG>.... |
