I have a bit of a dilema. I have acne-prone skin, with a few fine lines starting. I currently use Proactiv which I know the toner has like 6% Glycolic Acid in it. Well, at the health food store the skin care specialist there said Glycolic acid products are not good for everyday use, because they can strip the skin and in return produce more oil. Well I have the opposite problem, my skin on cheeks is pretty dry but finding a moisturizer that doesn't cause me to break out is a real problem.

My quesstion is this...which product is better for reducing fine lines - Retinyl Palmitate (which is in one of my skin moisturizers in high amount) or Vitamin C Serum? I heard both were good and alot of people remark about Retin-A but I heard Retinyl Palmitate can be good if its used in higher amounts which this particular product is. And is the Glycolic acid in the Proactiv toner ok to use in conjuction with either the Vitamin A or C??

I don't really want to use too many products on my face at once, because I break out really easily and due to the dryness from the Proactiv, I only wash my face in the mornings. Does anyone have any recommendations which is better as far as either the Retinyl Palmitate or Vitamin C serum for fine line reduction? And then theres the problem of getting enough moisturizing and sunscreen.

Hi mermaid7000 - I believe retinyl palmitate will do a better, faster job at dimishing fine lines than Vit.C, but I'd keep using both -- the C will boost the effect of your sunscreen, and it offers other benefits as well, like clarifying skin tone and redness. Actually, I'm in the market for a treatment with retinyl palmitate, since I'm having a little trouble tolerating SkinCeuticals Retinol .5% if I use it more than 2 or 3 times a week. I've read that RP is gentler, which may mean it isn't as active as retinol, but I don't care -- I hate having flaky, scaly skin. Also, when I use retinol around my eyes, I get temporary lines, so I need something I can use in that sensitive area.

What's the RP product you're using?

Well the Retinyl Palmitate is a moisturizing gel with Vitamin E, although it doesnt seem to moisturize as well as I'd like its by Derma-E. I know topical Vitamin C can be drying and thats the last thing I need right now, so I need to know the best way to go about this since my skin is dry but prone to breakouts if I use too much on it. If the Retinyl Palmitate moisturizing gel moisturized enough there would be no problem, cuz I would just use that over a Vita C serum but I dont want to use Vit C serum, the RP moisturizing gel and then an additional moisturizer over that..my skin would break out everywhere using that many products. And I only wash my face in the morning, not twice a day since its so dry.

The problem is too, there are Retinyl Palmitate creams or lotions, but they always seem to load them up with oils or potential pore cloggers, so thats another issue.

I would recommend that you use the C serum each AM followed by a good sunscreen and use the retinyl palmitate at night. It is not as strong as Retin-A but still is a good product.

I second that, betterat40. Many of us use a C serum in the am and an A-active at night. C helps with sunblocking and A's tend to be inactivated by light (I hope I got this right). SkinCeuticals has a C+AHA serum so it is my understanding that your glycolic acid and your C serum will enhance each other. My only other rec. would be to wash with something that is more moisturizing and doesn't strip or clog like PSF green tea cleanser. My skin is similar to yours and I use this.

Well since I only wash my face in the mornings because it is so dry, and I am using Proactiv to control breakouts, do you think its ok to use the Retinyl Palmitate under a Vitamin C cream or serum in the mornings, because I don't wash my face twice a day?

No I don't put anything on at nite.

In the morning I wash my face with Proactiv cleanser and follow with Proactiv toner. Then put on Vitamin C cream. What I'm wondering is can I put the Retinyl Palmitate on before applying the Vitamin C cream or serum?? At nite I do not do anything or put anything on my face as it is dry and does not feel like I need to wash it unless I sweat alot on a hot day during the summer.

mermaid7000,

I would recommend emailing the derma-e company and asking them directly. Also, they may have an idea as to what should go on first, the C or the A. Things with water should go on before things with oils for best results. If you contact them, I'd love to hear what they have to say about putting on vitamin A in the morning and if one inactivates the other.

I just called Derma-e and they said its fine to put on right before vitamin C creme or right after vitamin C serum depending on which one I use. I was also trying to find out what else Retinyl Palmitate did besides wrinkle prevention and got disconnected Sad
