When I was planning my wedding, I saw a gown inspired by the one below from My Fair Lady (the embassy ball scene).

It was $5K at the time and I can't recall the designer. I also write for a fashion and beauty blog. Wedding season's coming up. If anyone knows of where I can point readers to get a dress like this, please let me know. Thanks!

Hi TooInvolved - forum fashion maven! The masterful Cecil Beaton was the costume designer for My Fair Lady as well as Gigi, and deservedly won Oscars for both. Who among us who've ever seen those two films can forget his lavish and captivating work? The black/white/grey Ascot clothing is forever etched in my brain! Gigi's night at Maxim's is a chic riot of over-the-top plumage! From what I can tell, Sir Cecil was not one to stint in any way, and it paid off.

But to answer your question, if anyone can get a dress like Eliza's/Audrey's embassy gown for $5,000, it would be an absolute steal. Just look at the beadwork! That kind of opulent detail (when well-executed) is only found in couture. And what could be classier than the modified empire silhouette? The few remaining designers capable of couture these days tend toward the more outrageous or unusual. Aside from Valentino or perhaps Karl Lagerfeld, I don't know who would design a dress as richly and stunningly classic as this one. But I'm sure a decent and affordable knock-off isn't outside the realm of possibility. Badgley-Mischka make some lovely wedding apparel these days that's more in the price range you mentioned. I'd start there first.

Thanks, M and RTN!

Yes, isn't this dress UNBELIEVABLE?! I knew CB did the costumes for MFL...He was fantastically talented, no? I have the film and became a bit of a fanatic about it for a while. I actually had the dress made for my wedding (reception), but if it already exists somewhere, I'd love to tell my readers about it. I know lots of women want his gown for their weddings too!

Thanks for the Mischka rec! I'll try that one.
