Hello All,
I want to know what the difference is between Neutrogena, Aveeno or Biore, Vs. Clinique and all the "expensive" brands?

Thanks

Hi there - I'm not sure about the other drugstore cleansers you mentioned, but when I'm needing to tighten the belt I use Cetaphil cleanser from the drugstore. It's the thing most dermatoligists recommend, and it is a cleanser a friend of mine uses who is as much of a skin guru as many of the mavens on this site!

Everyone has their own favorite cleanser, and in my own personal opinion, if it's doing it's job, fits your budget, and isn't causing havoc with your skin...fly at `er! I don't know the specific ingredients with the products that you have named, but know that these usually have more fragrance, detergent, and additives that can irritate the skin. Exception: Cetaphil and Spectro Gel (Canada).

Your cleanser's purpose is to do two things: lift and suspend dirt, oil, and make-up. Some, such as MD Formulations, contain ingredients such as gylcolic acid, to also act as a gentle exfoliant. Depends on the cleanser, the skintype, and the preferences of the consumer.

I will note, however, that Clinique's "3-Step System", though loved by millions over the years ... the cleansing bars are very alkaline to the skin. And that fresh, tingly feeling that one gets after using Step 2 (the toner)? This is the cosmetic alcohol & menthol! Both are drying and dehydrating to the skin. Though the claim is that this product is exfoliating the skin after cleansing .... I don't think this is the case. It's marketing promotes using the 3 Steps together, always. Ever noticed though that their Dramatically Different Lotion isn't so ... dramatically different?Surprised It doesn't make sense to me: to use a detergent-based cleanser, then to strip the skin with the harsh astringent toner, and then have to rehydrate the skin with DDMF! And then you have to add MORE products over top of this to achieve better balance with the skin (i.e. "Moisture Surge", etc.) It's all about money, honeys, and those people in the white lab coats reaching the "IPT" (items per transaction) goals for the day. `Nuff said.
