Bought MyChelle Fruit Enzyme Mist for a toner yesterday. Adore the fun pineapple scent; pineapple extract, gonna find me some of that. It lists "heavy water" and boasts heavy water on the front label.
I thought $20 was a bit much for 4 oz of sweet smelling "heavy water" and I want to use it liberally, so I mixed 4 oz of distilled water w/ it when I got home, doubling the quantity...still smells sweet and feels good on dry skin. Not so heavy anymore I guess.
Using this allowed me to skip the moisturizer before my Retin-A Micro last night. See, I listen! |

Hi Cyndi,
When I first read this, I thought that "heavy" water might be "mineral water" ... but not so.
It is, apparently, slightly different than ordinary water in that the hydrogen isotope

has a neutron in addition to the proton in its nucleus |
Now, heavy water is used in nuclear reactors ...
Apparently it's also "midly toxic" ... so you may want to read this link for more information.

I wonder what the benefit would be to using "heavy water" in skin care products ...
Hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply! Not the answer I was expecting....Nuclear? GULP.
Definitely led me to search more...found info. re. Heavy Water in connection with, yes, nuclear power (industrial), beneficial in medication for cancer patients (digested),and beneficially topically...see below for skin care companies' spin....
Jane Iredale says~ D2O is Deuterium Oxide - heavy water. Its hydrogen molecule is twice the weight of the molecule in ordinary water, which makes D2O 10% heavier than H2O. Research has found that: Heavy Water has a higher resistance to vaporization, which helps it stay on the skin for longer periods of time. It has more viscosity. This "thickness" gives it a higher "plumping" effect than regular water and the skin does not dry out as quickly or as deeply. It requires ten times as much energy to be ionized than regular water, which makes it more protective against ultra violet radiation. It inactivates certain acne bacteria, making it an ideal moisturizing agent for blemish-prone skin.
Use to set mineral after makeup has been applied. Use to hydrate skin at any time - especially in dry climates or planes. Oily skins can use as a moisturizer. Laser patients spritz frequently - especially during dry, flaky period.
MyChelle says~ heavy water: This water naturally occurs in saline lakes and in deep sea water. It bonds more strongly than regular water with the skin and other connective tissue preventing the skin from drying out as quickly or as deeply. Has remarkable protective and preserving action on tissue.
I do like the pineapple scent. |
