I thought it was the sun also...but my 4 year old is getting them and hes never really been in the sun...I sunscreen him all the time. And he has them in areas that wouldn't normally get sun, hes got a small one on his shoulder blade, another one on a buttock..I think heredity has alittle to do with it.

I saw this small paragraph that I thought sums it up quite well:

'the more melanin you have in your skin, the tanner you look! People with fair skin have less melanin in their skin to begin with, but some of their melanocytes make more melanin when exposed to the sun. So instead of easily getting an even suntan, they sometimes get freckles'

I imagine freckles like little defence shields, defending our skin from the sun.

It is hereditary, some people have a predesposition to freckles, therefore they will appear quicker on the skin regardless of sun exposure. But it is also due to sun exposure and ageing. When your skin is exposed to uv a chain reaction occurs in your skin ending in melanocytes producing melanin to protect the skin. Sometimes too much melanin is produced in the cell and your body can't reabsorb it, hence, a freckle/sun spot. What alot of people don't realise is that uv penetrates clothing, so you can get spots even though you may not directly be exposed to the sun.

^ Wow! I am learning so much from these posts! I had no idea about any of this. I have the same spots as my mom in exactly the same places and I have a completely different skin type than her. Plus I have always worn sun screen and layered clothing and still I get the spots. Now to find a better sunscreen I guess............. Confused
