This morning as I was putting on my weekly masque, I was thinking I'd like to follow a once a weekly home facial, but I'm not sure what steps to follow. I had a professional facial recently, and I think they followed these steps... scrub, steam, extractions and masque? Is that usually correct?

What do you suggest? And for the home steaming (the face over the steaming water with a towel over your head idea) ... how long would you steam your face? I'd like to include extractions as well ... GENTLE extractions (which although I've read how they should be done properly, I haven't been so good at being "gentle" in the past Sad )

I'd love to hear what your routines are.

Thanks!

I usually scrub first, then steam, then mask. I always make sure to put the mask in a mug of hot water to heat the mask up. As soon as I'm done steaming, as fast as humanly possible I put the mask on before my pores close. I really find this helps over just putting on a mask normally. I'm interested in hearing other's tips for this routine as well. I don't know where extractions fit in there since I don't do them.

If I got "the whole hog" with a home facial I do:

(Step 1)
Deep cleanse and massage using a cleansing balm or oil: really give the face, neck and decollete a good massage, concentrating on pressure points (Eve Lom has a good outline for facial massage in her leaflet). Remove with muslin cloth
Note: I used to have Eve Lom but am changing now to Neal's Yard Remedies Rose Balm - but The Organic Pharmacy Carrot Balm would work too..

(step 2)
a gentle manual exfoliation (I do sometimes skip this as my skin is well exfoliated - but after summer I hope to get the Organic Pharmacy flower petal scrub/mask to use in this step)

(Step 3)
Steam treatment with essential oils: I just do the old towel over the head deal and toss in some lavender and/or rose geranium oil to the water.

(Step 4)
mask: applied immediately after the steaming (I keep the mask and a mirror on the table beside me.. applying to areas with pore or blemish problems first). A good purifying mask is good for this (something that draws out impurities). Sometimes I like to place a damp muslin cloth over my face and then lie down for 10 mins while this is on (oh, and dont forget a nice eye mask at the same time)

(step 5)
remove mask and follow with a light moisturizer or facial oil (I hate going for facials and having them SLATHER product on my face at the end)

I never do extractions so cannot comment on where or how to do them.

I've read some good reviews on the shiseido benefiance eye mask on MUA, they love it so far there, but sounds pretty intense, have a look there, as it depends on what you want the eye-mask to do for you....

The eye masks from Decleor and Sothy's are supposed to be good (they are on my shopping list) as is the Hormeta eye gel/mask.

I am currently trying a sample of the new Guerlain eye cream (which can be used as a mask) and have also tried Origins no-puffery (it is OK, but I did not love it enough to buy full size) and the Suisse Programme Cellular Eye Mask (average feel, not sure it does anything great in the time it is on.. tooo expensive to buy full size for the "results")

I start with a mild exfoliation, then an herbal or aromatherapy steam, followed immediately by a mask. After rinsing or wiping off mask depending on what it is I finish off with some mild toner and a cream or facial oil applied with light massaging strokes to help with tone and circulation.
