OK, maybe I'm dumb, but I just don't get it! There is a ton of skin-care products being sold an E-Bay for much less than it would normally cost!
For example, I've been eyeing Dr. Denese's Day Creme - it's $49 on QVC, but people are seling it for $6, $12, etc.. The stuff looks authentic in the picture, and these sellers have excellent feedback ratings, so how are they getting it and selling it so cheaply? BTW - the product is new and freshly sealed.
I was also looking up Prevage MD, which is supposed to be available by presciption only. Well, not only is it on E-Bay, but it is at a low price as well.
So my questions are: are the products being sold authentic? (I really don't see how it can't be if the product is sealed), where are these people getting all of this stuff from, and how are they able to sell it at such super-low prices? Also, is it safe to purchase stuff for the face on E-Bay? (it's not like I'm buying a toy for my kid or a piece of clothes...) |

You have to be careful and check if it's a sample size or full size |

They also jack up shipping so I always check the total price plus shipping and compare that to the retail price first. And yes, check to see if it is a sample size. |

make sure the original seal is intact and the expiration date (if applicable) is still good. |

I always think maybe it accidently fell out of a truck. Yeah... but most of the time (for example my RoC eye cream) I just assume that it was shoplifted. I mean seriously... I got it for half price.. the boxes are so small right there on the shelves in jewels and walmarts and the like. It came from the Bronx... I put two and two together and thats what came up. I could be wrong, I'm sure there's a lot of weird cases out there of how people came across stuff to sell on Ebay. You'll never know for sure until you ask the person selling it, and even though they'll probably just lie! Sorry but I'm kind of cynical... |

I admit it... I'm a seller myself, and still I suspect other items on ebay of being stolen, LOL! But for example, when I sell items, there's nothing wrong with them, I just got a really good deal on them. For example, let's say that QVC is having a special, and I also have a coupon for QVC---voila--- low price! Also, sometimes I buy an item, and then before I even use it I decide I don't want it, so then I ebay it to try to get back at least some of the money I spent. |

Or you buy a package deal of something and sell the thing that you aren't going to use. You also have to remember that most cosmetic retail things are marked up about 100%. So for an item that you pay $60 for the store only pays $30. If the seller is buying at retail price, they can sell that item at $40 and still make a profit. |

I worked at a clothing store a while back and our suppliers gave us amazing deals. We'd get stuff like 25%, sometimes 40% off from the wholesale price which was half what the store charges...
I got some awesome deals so perhaps it's stuff like that? Or they order huge amounts and get bulk discounts? I'm not sure.. |

I wonder about some of the deals too. For example, I see "100 Burts Bees Lip Balms". Where do people get all those lip balms to sell? Hmm...makes me wonder if they worked for Burts Bees. |

What ticks me off is people trying to sell so many samples, they try to sell like 100ml of product but actually it's made up of 5x20ml sample tubes .. I wonder where they get them all from!!
But a lot of sellers from Hong Kong tend to sell authentic goods at prices even cheaper than Strawberrynet.. because they can get many things wholesale without tax. |

HMMM? I've always wondered about this as well. Thanks for asking the question. I still haven't purchased skincare on EBay and probably won't as I'm too suspicious of tampering. |

My girlfriend has a bottle of Clarins bust beauty gel she bought in Hunan province that she can't figure out the authenticity of. She bought it from a woman who said she works for Clarins' China distributor. The packaging and bottle look almost identical to one she bought from a department store. The only thing different is that the department store bottle has its French in italics, while the suspect bottle has its French in normal print. Now my girlfriend refuses to use the suspect bottle. I guess it serves her right, but I think Clarins is overpriced anyway. Let's hope the "distributor" hasn't found Ebay. |

Many ppl try to sell sample sizes. That's because they get the samples for free, either working for the company or something. I see a sample size of creme de la Mer on Ebay of 3.5ml. It's starting bid is at $12! You can get those samples for free at any Creme de la Mer store or counter. |

OK, I took the plunge and bought the Dr. Denese's Day Cream with "buy it now", got it from a seller who had very good feedback, spent $22 plus shipping, total of $29, which is a lot cheaper than the $49 plus shipping at QVC. The post said it is 2oz, expires 2008 & is sealed. I am a nervous wreck, never bought skin care at E-Bay before, I am hoping this works out ok.
What's weird was she has like 24 of these to sell. Still not sure how people sell like this. Also, I'm sure I can't return it if I don't like it, which is one of the benefits when you buy from a regular seller.... |

I always wonder about ebay too .. and once I saw a Valmont serum and also a cream (full size) starting at $11 each and I went like .. wow.. but then the prices ended up like $90 which is still cheaper than the regular price anyway .. But many of my friends buy skincare and other stuff like cell phone from ebay and they never have problems so I guess it's safe? as long as the sellers have good feedback. |

$60 for a Chanel purse? I'd be 99.99% sure it's fake. I'm surprised the Chanel lawyers haven't shut it down yet - they're one of the companies that are very aggressive about protecting their brand. |

This is what I do too. I don't doubt a lot things are lifted and not all by customers but also the people who work where the products are sold. When I worked in retail a huge part of the shop lifting problem was by the employees themselves. |

Chanel doesn't check every auction. It would be nice if eBay could do more about the fakes but I get the feeling they aren't too concerned, unless of course Chanel gets on their backs. They are making hand over fist in profits and I'm sure that's what matters most. |

the only way i wonder about things is when it's at a low price for buying and not bidding. When there is a high demand for a product in general, the low price usually jumps to about the average price once the bidding is over. I purchased a tube of sunscreen thats originally 30+ dollars and the bid was at $1.00. I waited until the day the auction ended and there were 3 bids..the price was around 15.00. After bidding and being outbid a couple times i finally won the item..sometimes you get lucky and win the item for really cheap though. I can honestly say i've had no problems at all so far. |

A lot of these power sellers are wholesalers.
Also, if for some reason you ever get ripped off, item doesn't arrive etc... AND you paid with PayPal you can do a chargeback. It goes through PayPal and credit card.
Always contact the seller first and voice your complaint. You cannot do a chargeback if the item arrives but you've changed your mind or found it cheaper elsewhere. A chargeback is if it doesn't arrive or it is not as described. For instance if it states "new" but it's not or if the size is wrong and so on. In both cases most sellers will offer a refund first because they don't want negative feedback or chargebacks.
I have bought and sold on eBay since 1999 and only had to do a chargeback once. |
