Hi
Does coconut milk have any worthwhile uses in skincare. I don't mean the pulp, but the pure milk inside the nut, which is abundant at this time of year.
I've looked on the internet but I can't find anything interesting about it for external uses only internal.
Anyone know what it's properties are?
I was thinking I might be able to use it for hair or skin I'm all out of anything moisturising.
Thanks Molly |

Hi I live in a tropical country, thus Coconuts are very abundant here. I love it on the hair. (check out longhaircommunity.com)
I don't use it on the face, but I also love coconut oil for my body, cuticles, etc it's light and absorbs fast |

Hi JozieGrozy
Do you think it would work for the, cone-free, "no 'poo" washing? I'm still looking for something.
I'm so fed up with trawling hair sites - can you just tell me how you use it.
Thanks a lot M |

Hello Molly
I live in the Philippines (very humid); the type where you just took a bath and you're already breaking a sweat (LOL). Thus I cannot do with no 'poo for hair The best I can do is NO SLS 'poos and no proteins and cones.
I shampoo every other day, every third day if my scalp allows it Then conditioner.
I coconut my hair when it is dry. I get a very small amount rub it in my palms and put it in the ends of my hair, then to the length of my hair, avoiding the scalp. I find that it is the lightest oil for the hair. It makes it soft wihtout making it look wet and greasy (just use spare amount!!!). I love the smeall and i find that when I shampoo it off, it leave my hair soft, and I do not need leave-in cones anymore (my hair is very very thick porous and can become quite frizzy, it is very chemically treated too with Ionic straightening). So I like how it drinks the C. oil and makes it soft and manage-able and makes it stay put .
For the body, I put it on at night time and makes my skin feel smooth, better than my Lubriderm/Eucerin.
I buy the organice Coconut oil that is not processsed. Thus it is solid at cold temperatures and liquid at room temperatures
Sorry for the rambling sentences

One of the EDS members here takes a coconut milk bath that she swears by. I'm sure she'll be posting on this as soon as she sees it. {calling PNW!!!!} |

a bath.........in the milk? Does she live in a coconut grove?
Thanks for the suggestion JozieG, but now you write it I'm not sure we're talking about the same stuff, because the milk is like water. I don't see how you could massage it into your hair sparingly Maybe I should have said the 'fresh milk' you know from inside the nut.
I might just try it as a rinse.
Thanks M |

Tehe. Hi Girls, Hi Molly. No, I live very far from coconuts and the tropics. I've just been searching for the best things to put in my bath water that will leave me moisturized and soft so I don't have to apply lotion after. Too lazy.
I've tried powdered milk, real buttermilk, grapeseed oil, hazelnut oil, avacado oil, and coconut milk. Whenever you want to feel really soft and sexy, just add a half to 3/4 of a tiny can of coconut milk to your bath water. That might come to about 1/2 cup, maybe. I love it!! |

i think she was talking about pure coconut *oil* not the milk. i became addicted to the stuff as well when i was living in Tahiti. as for the fresh milk, i don't recall it ever doing anything for my hair (i'm sure i tried it), but then i have really porous long hair. i didn't have a bath to try pnw's recipe (and, yes, CK, i think she's talking about the cans we use for cooking). the only thing i recall ever doing with the fresh coconut milk was *drinking* it. very good, very refreshing in a hot tropical clime. i think it must have some natural electrolytes or something as i didn't know about these back at the time and was having to hike several miles a day and never once dehydrated! |

okay, Molly, had to some trolling for you. i love a challenge.... one site said: 'Make a paste with red sandal powder and coconut milk and apply on the face for soft skin.' as for coconut milk and the hair, it seems that if you mix it with gratings from the fresh coconut and rub it into your scalp it will prevent hair loss. or if you mix the milk with fresh lime juice, it acts as a natural relaxer/straightener. and *then* you're supposed to use a good conditioner. defeats your purpose, no? though there was a site that mentioned mixing it with a mashed avocado, leaving it on your hair for 15 minutes, then shampoo and rinse. or you can put coconut milk in a spray bottle and use it as a leave-in volumiser. and, last but not least, what you were thinking about using it for: 'If fresh green coconut's available, try to massage in warm coconut milk in the hair and keep for about an hour and a half, wrapped in a towel. Then rinse with warm water. This can be done twice or thrice a week.' |

well, you could use it as skincare...
... but why not drink it? i really really love coconut milk.
heh, this thread has put harry belafonte in my head.
"Get your coconut water. four for five.
Man, it's good for your daughter. four for five.
Coco got a lot of iron.
Make you strong like a lion. rarr"
" The thing that’s best if you’re feeling glum
Is coconut water with a little rum.
It could make you very tipsy, four for five,
Make you feel very frisky, four for five,
Coco got a lotta iron, four for five,
Make you strong like a lion, four for five. "
::walks off humming::

Oh yes, I am talkin' about the canned milk from the supermarket. I get mine in the "Asian" aisle and I think it is called Thai brand. I see all kinds of milks in skincare, goats milk, buttermilks, even donkey's milk! Cleopatra started the bathing in milk thing, so I thought I'd try coconut milk and I think it is wonderful! |

the coconut milk we get in the cans (i LOVE that stuff, for cooking, and drinking and... YUM) is different from the coconut water/milk that comes straight out of the coconut. the stuff in cans has pulp in it--it's more coconut cream than milk and sometimes when you open a can, there's watery stuff that's separated from the creamier stuff-- i think that's more what she's talkign about.
for skin, i would maybe use it like a toner, or like a hydrating spray?
but mmmm. coconut water... |

I have used coconut cream on my hair as a treatment for about 20 mins, had to shampoo out as you can really see the oil in the cream but it did leave my hair lovely and soft..I'm due for another actually and think I'll add a couple of drops of essential oil next time. |

Interesting thread!
I may look into trying this as a hair mask, although I can imagine it may get messy. |

LOL. Who knew? I've never even seen the inside of a real coconut
That's a great point, I wonder whether it is the cream that is the softener? I just shake the can up beforehand and mix it all together. |
