I'm 21 and I just started using an Paula's Choice Antioxidant serum at night. Is this a bad idea for my skin or is it playing smart considering I live in a highly polluted environment (metro detroit area)? It does contain retinol but I wear an SPF of 15 or higher daily...and do not put the serum all over my skin, but on small problem areas and areas that are important for me to maintain.

I think that using antioxidants at your age is a great idea! I actually think you should be using a product with antioxidants on your entire face. I don't know about doing that with this serum though. I looked it up and it seems to be a nice product but depending on your skin type and needs you may not want to put something with retinol on your entire face. But then again it may have such a low percentage of retinol that it wouldn't matter.

I don't think 21 is too young, I really started using good skincare at about that age as well. **Make sure to invest in a great sunscreen daily as well, will make such a difference in your skin's future**

yeah i was thinking I was too young for retinol. My sister told me the point of retinol is to thicken the skin which i thought would be great to use while I sleep without any sunlight or anything...But the main point I did purchase this was because it is an antioxidant. My texture of my skin is very smooth minus some acne i've gotten since getting off birth control. The only thing I've noticed within the past year is a small crease (very very small, probably only noticable to myself) by one of my eyebrows from expression, and i used the antioxidant on it and now it is completely gone. I suppose the stuff is a keeper maybe? hehe.

I think it's a good idea too, unless the anti-oxidant is in a highly acidic base like a lot of the higher Cs.

Actually there is retinol and retinol. I've read two good explanations of this and no-one here ever agrees with me, but I'll say it again.

Retinol used at very low percentages is actually an anti-oxidant and STIMULATES oil production thus moisturising the skin.

I used to use a moisturiser with retinol when I lived in a dry climate and it did moisturise.

You need higher levels to 'irritate/stimulate' skin cell turnover resulting in a thicker epidermis and thinner epidermis and act like Retin A.

If you want to know more I'll look up my sources but I can't be bothered now.

Anyway - it won't thin your epidermis or make you sun sensitive.

The first time i read it I swore it said 2% dose of retinol, but that sounds too high to be true. Maybe i was wrong because i don't see that anywhere now or perhaps i read that for a different product. She does speak of cell turnover, but i really decided the product would be nice because i read antioxidants can reduce reddness of the skin because it's an anti irritant. I have some small broken capillaries because i have thin sensitive skin and to be honest they have shrank considerably in size/almost disappeared since using this product along with my skincare. You are correct with the moisture factor...it does make my skin very soft..Thank you for your input Smile

If you don't mind sending me some information, you can just PM me whenever you feel like it.

I had never heard this stuff about different levels of retinol having different effects. Sounds interesting though. Molly, no rush, but I would be very interested to know what level has the one effect and what level has the other.
