I've been trying to win the battle over congested skin for the past several months.
I've noticed that I have 2 different types of clogged pores: the regular blackhead type (mostly around the nose & forehead), and the "seed" kind (mostly around my cheek & hairline).
Are these caused by different things, and should they be treated differently as well? |

Oooh...I'd like to know this too.
I'm eyeing the SkinMedica AHA and BHA face cream - 15% I think. |

The best thing I've found for my clogged pores is Carekate's SuperSonic Mask (see DIY thread). I use it every day and it REALLY helps. I add Tea Tree Oil, Lemon Essential Oil, and Kaolin Clay to mine. Now here's the disgusting part: I also have to use a 10X magnification mirror and manually clean out (extract the "gunk") from my pores on a daily basis. I know it's not recommended, but (I hope I don't gross you out too much!) I've found that a little squeeze here and there followed by thorough cleansing hasn't been a problem so far and actually seems to be a necessity for my skin type. If I don't keep up with the daily mask and the manual cleaning, my pores get really clogged.
BTW--I also have to be very careful about what products I put on my face. Anything too "rich" causes clogged pores. |

I have congested skin like you do. What I am doing lately is going to the steam room whenever I go to the swimming pool. The steam room helps open up pores and draw out impurities from it. After that I use Dr. Hauschka cleansing cream and toner. My skin has improved alot |

Hi KLS,
It sounds like your skin needs to be balanced. I have seen Shelly and Brenda from Ice Elements come up with excellent regimins for those with trouble skin, like yours. You might want to check it out.
If you'd rather stick with what you have, I would suggest maybe just using the basics... Cleanser and moisturizer... for a few days and see what happens. Sometimes too wide of a variety of products can counteract each other. Or maybe some of the things that you are using are just too much for your skin.
Take care. |

kls, my skin has been really congested over the last couple of months. I got everything from blackheads to cystic acne. I recently went back to using Serious Skin Care from the Shopping Channel and it has worked miracles. My skin is actually healing now. |

I promise you Clarisonic will take care of this problem. I had lots of needles on my chin and blackheads on my nose, and they're virtually gone now. I'm on week 3. |

Dollbird, have you ever used a regular motorized facebrush? I have been seriously thinking about getting a Clarisonic but it's so expensive! I have one from Homemedics and I'm just wondering how different the Clarisonic would be. |

This sounds really interesting! Expensive, yes ... but if it worked it would be worth it. I still have alot of tiny bumps under my skin that never seem to develop into blackheads or whiteheads. I'd love to get rid of them.
I'm assuming when using this brush that you wouldn't also use another product to exfoliate? I'm hoping it would work well with my own cleanser ... or should you use theirs? I can't really afford it now anyway, but I'd sure like to try it out down the road.
Oh! I just noticed that EDS carries this! Hmmmm ... and 20% off right now ... well, maybe the VISA could handle ONE more thing. |

Have you tried OCM method? It helps to many people on this forum. |

Moonstarr, sure it's expensive but it will be well worth it in the long run, since you can scrap the scrubs, exfoliators, masks and not to mention, trips to the facialist! To see how it specifically works, go towww.clarisonic.com. With the 20% off from EDS now, it is such a great deal! Just make sure you use a good gentle cleanser with it as using the brush would make some cleanser go into your eyes. I find Dermalogica's Ultra Calming Cleanser very effective for this purpose. Also, it is not advisable to use cleansers with tiny grains in them, sorry Dr. H Cleansing Cream fans! For more info I have provided 2 reviews of this brush in the Product Reviews Forum.
Olyn, no I have not tried any other motorised face brush. You may remember me from the hormonal chin acne thread...so the reason why I got the Clarisonic was because of my acne. It has helped a lot with my acne, but to my surprise it has also evened out my skin tone, got rid of flakies, clear out pores and give my skin an overall smooth and clear appearance. The Clarisonic website also has Before and After pictures of people with wrinkles, fine lines and rosacea (I can't vouch for the wrinkle part as I have yet to develop any). But what ultimately led to me buying this brush, is this thread on acne.org---> http://www.acne.org/messageboard/index.php?showtopic=55414. It has AMAZING pictures of people using the Jessfoliation method. It was accidentally discovered by this Jessica girl, and basically it is exfoliating with a motorised Oral B toothbrush and spot-treating with Neosporin. She attributes her acne clearing up to the exfoliating, and the Neosporin is just to reduce redness and scarring. If you don't want to take the plunge, maybe you could start off with the Oral B toothbrush first. It is much cheaper (around $15). Jess says to give it 3 months for acne to completely clear up. The thing with the Clarisonic though, is that it oscillates at a speed of 300+ movements/second, which is more than the speed of the Oral B, so results may vary. If my Clarisonic ever breaks down, or if i ever feel like i need a step up from it, I will probably exfoliate with the Sonicare, which osciallates at a speed of 520+ movements/second. Faster = better cleansing? I don't know, as my Clarisonic works fine now, but just some food for thought. Good luck! |

Well, being the impulsive person that I am ... I went ahead and ordered it tonight! I figured with the 20% it was the time to do it ... I can't wait to try it out. |

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I think I'm clearing out my skin, but it seems like there's so much. Either I'm dealing with extremely deep clogged pores that are taking forever to purge, or I'm reclogging them on a daily basis with products. I haven't figured that one out yet.
I do steam my face & use DHCC. However, I'm currently using ISC & have to be careful not to over exfoliate with cleansers & scrubs. (I had to give up OCM & epidermx).
I want to get the Clarisonic soooo much, but would that be too aggressive on my skin using the ISC line?
Also, I'm still wondering about the 2 types of clogged pores, are they the same, and are they caused by different things? |

Only one thing actually unclogs pores and keeps skin CLEAR and smaller, pores will be more refined and thats a well formulated beta hydroxy acid or BHA for short. Go towww.cosmeticscop.com for all the info under skin care. They make a very good BHA in 1 or 2% strength in gel, lotion or liquid form. Its your choice. This is an excellent product. Consistent use is the key. You will be amazed. |
