I currently don't use a toner after cleansing, as I find my skin is fine without it & that most of them, even some of the alcohol-free ones leave my skin feeling really raw & irritated But when I went to a beautician the other day she was simply shocked by this & said toner is the most underrated skincare product & hence this is the reason why my pores are so large, the reason why I get occasional breakouts & all of my other skin problems are due to this etc etc (which I personally believe are actually related to hormones! )
But is it really that necessary to use a toner? |

I've always heard that toning "preps" your skin for anything you're going to put on it-- moisturizers, creams, etc. I like them because I feel like it's getting off anything my cleanser didn't get rid of, as well as any cleanser residue. You can get different sorts of toners for different sorts of things-- refining pores, extra moisture, calming redness... all toners are not created equal! Personally, it's my favorite step in my regimen. |

I didn't use a toner before too.. until ACV!!! Toners are great for completely removing any cleanser residue and restoring PH balance to the skin (if u have SLS cleansers). |

I have never used a toner except for an occasional trial of a sample. IMO if you use a good quality cleanser then it should not leave any residual on your face. I really think it is a personal choice and depends on your cleanser. A while ago I was trying to use up a cleanser and after rinsing it off, I applied Proheal and as I rubbed it in, it started to go a bit soapy on my skin. No matter how much I rinsed my face after washing, I still had the same effect. With the combination of this cleanser and Proheal I needed to either use a toner or change cleansers. I changed cleansers.
If I had a beautician who told me what yours did, then I would probably change beauticians. |

I concur with bushy Sometimes I don't use toner after DHCC coz I feel that DHCC is such a good cleanser (no nasties, correct PH) and I feel like it still working in my skin after cleansing
I use ACV on days I'm too lazy to DHCC but if you have good cleanser, then it's ok not to use a toner |

I'm with Bushy and Jozie, i use it ocassionally only - when i need this refreshing feeling. i always have one at home (now it's skinceuticals), just in case, but it's not part of my regimen. i love my skin after the OCM and i rather don't want to disturb this feeling with a toner. |

I definitely agree with you there! It was obvious she was trying to convince me that my skin is that terrible so she could just try & sell me the most expensive products there ...not very professional really |

I personally think toners are way too astringent and strip my skin of natural oils. In fact, I stay away from product lines that include toners. I have never found a toner that left my skin feeling comfortable, alcohol or no. I really don't see the point of washing my face and then stripping it of everything before putting it all back in the synthetic form of moisturiser.
I think toners are a tool to make you use more moisturiser product.

I've never found that toner does anything positive for my skin, so I just removed it from my routine to simplify things. Even with an oily t-zone, Cetaphil appears to cleanse adequately for me. Some toners made my skin feel too stripped of natural moisture and that was also a turn-off. I'm scared to trigger excessive oil production. When I feel like I need a more vigorous cleansing, I switch cleansers. I don't use a toner. |

If you want to use a toner, but don't want a tight, stripped feeling, you might like to try pure rosewater.
This is what I use, and I love it. Smells fantastic, too! |

I have very oily skin and was, for years, convinced that without toner, my face would the site of an oil slick!
Ahhhhh what experience teaches...
I haven't used toner for quite some time now and my skin is LESS OILY. I've read stuff saying that toner strips the skin and convinces your oil glands that they need to produce more oil. I don't think that's it though. Just the change in products... |

I've heard that toner's are really necessary, however, I do have one (Dermalogica) that I sometimes use for those days when I get home, it's been hot, and I just want to quickly take off some of the makeup and feel refreshed. |

I for one cannot LIVE without my toner. My skin is acne-prone and sensitive, so of course it can't tolerate Clinique, Noxema, etc, but the right toner absolutely works miracles on my skin. Take Dr. Hauschka's toner, for example. When I use it in the morning it actually helps my skin feel dewy and moisturized, but if I use it during the day, it really obliterates the oilies. All this, AND it fights acne. Love it!! Another toner I'm totally addicted to is the Zenbiotic toner--- it's as gentle as pure water, but it really makes my skin glow. So, like I said, I love toner, it just has to be the right toner. |

I love my N.V. Perricone Alpha Lipoic Acid toner.
I also like citrix anti-oxidant toner. |

Hi,
I don't use a toner either. Tried it once - believe it or not, it led to my oil glands over-reacting, causing redness and spots. Don't think any item is a must. It all depends on your skin and whether you feel good after applying a product. |

Katee, I heard the same thing. I don't use a toner because of that and it tends to make my face more oily. |

for those who don't use a toner, if you have no problems with your routine, by all means--don't change a thing.
if you do have some skin problems, you may want to consider a toner that's slightly acidic, to balance the ph of your skin after all those (usually) alkaline cleansers.
while the body is mostly alkaline, and functions best that way, there is an "acid mantle" where, the skin is slightly acidic, which prohibts bad microbe growth and encourages good microbe growth.
this seems to be a particular problem in those with acne and other skin disorders (exzema, which is how i first heard about it)
http://www.nyscc.org/news/archive/tech0604.htm
anyway, that's one reason to use a toner. |

I hate using tners they totally strip out my natural moisture. If my face is v. dehydrated then I'll end up with miliasss. Cheap toners, OTC stuffs, are normally loaded with oh-so-harsh SD alcohol but the worst is the expensive+inefficient one that saleperson convinces you to buy My Estee skincre set is just a trash in expensive wrapping paper to me! Toner really burns my skin. I once went to the EL counter and conplained and they just said that my milia didn't come from their products but it's the junk draining effect and they wouldnt exchange the range unless I'd got a medical record from my derm saying it I's allergic to it. Tht's a true rip- off, man. |

I have used toners my ENTIRE life. Either a witch hazel or clean and clear...I never feel clean (or my pores) if I do not finsih with one. But since I have discovered that my skin is so dehydrated, I have stopped. It is killing me, but I really have noticed a difference, My pores actually look smaller and I am not seeming clogged pores, so maybe the toner was doing more harm than good>? |

I either use a toner or a serum. toners are supposed to regulate the high pH in water and your cleanser and bring your skin back to its natural pH level, which as the other ladies say, preps your skincare for whatever moisturzier you use. when i use a serum, i skip toning because that is what the directions say. |

I used to. But after a while I found toner didn't do anything to my skin and I am too lazy. If I do use something, it would be hydrosol or evian water. |

I used to subscribe to the no-toner-necessary rule until I tried the homemade ACV toner and now I find if I skip that step in my routine, my skin is dramatically more oily that day and I have to blot my face almost continuously. Considering I'm already a grease-ball, I don't need any additional oil production so I've learned my lesson and ALWAYS use my ACV toner now after cleansing.
Also, here's an old thread regarding the Great Toner Debate that provides the scientific reasons for using one.
My personal feeling is that if the toner you use makes your skin feel dry or tight, or causes a burning sensation, then you're simply using the wrong type of toner for your skin. |

I've stopped using toners. Even if your cleanser is slightly "nasty", you can wait a while before applying actives, and the pH will be fine, right? Most of the time, I try to get really clean cleansers, but it is not always possible. In those instances, should I use a toner, I wonder? |
