Hi everybody,
i consulted my practinioner and he told me i shouldn't take any Vitamin A products when i'm still considering to get pregnant (resp. during pregnancy) and i should be pretty careful with all those retin-a and similar.
is this right or is he just too careful - what's your opinion? |

Yeah, I found that if the product has retinol in it, it gives a warning "not to be used during pregnancy". I'm not pregnant now but ready to have baby anytime. Can I still use it? |

lin23 I know that you should definetly not use retinoids (RetinA, Tazorac, Differin) if you are trying to get pregnant. Just to be safe I would avoid anything that contains retinol also. Is this being too cautious, I don't know but why take any chances?
Ocha IMO if you are trying to get pregnant you should not use retinoids or retinol. |

I think you have to follow your doctor advice. Vit A may have teratogenic effect on fetus. |

I'd be rather too cautious, definitely.
I wanted to hear your opinion on this, ladies - and also warn others, they eventually didn't hear about before.
thanks, as always.

Thanks a lot for you guy's reply. I'm not familiar with the ingredients at all. Does anyone know if Murad Essential-C and Valmont have any Retinol or similar ingredients that I should avoid? Thanks so much for your help in advance. |

Ocha do you mean the Murad Essential-C Day Moisture, SPF 15? If so that has Retinyl palmitate (vitamin A). I would avoid that just to be safe. I don't know about the Valmont. I have a few Valmont samples that I could check the ingredients on. What Valmont products are you wondering about? |

adrianaL are you trying to get pregnant? If so I wouldn't be using Differin at all. IMO it would not be safe to use the Differin until you miss a period because you are already 2 weeks pregnant by the time you miss your period! |

Hi,
I'm not trying yet but will start in Sept. so I called because if I need to wait three months after I stop using it then I would stop now. I think I will be safe and just stop using it before I even try.
I also wanted to ask, about other ingredients that are known to cause birth defects. When I was pregnant with my first child I didn't use anything because I was so afraid and my skin really paid for it.
what about ingredients like green tea, and pomegranate, vitamin c & e. I know my ob also told me not to take the vitamin e that I normally do for cystic fibroids. would that include face products with vitamin e?
I defenitly know no retinol, BHA, AHA, SA. |

Ladies,
If you are pregnant, nail-polish is no good to use.
Anybody has heard of that? |

Thanks TheresaL! I'm using few products from Valmont, such as White Falls, Vital Falls, Regentics, Bio-regenetic, hand cream, eye contour and Bio-cellular. I have read through the ingredients and they seem not having Vitamin A in the products. I think I should finish up the Murad before trying to get pregnant. |

I am bumping this up
Does anyone know if Benzoyl Peroxide is safe?
My husband and I are planning to have a baby soon and I wonder if I should stop using this.
I hate that it makes my skin dry but I am still using cause it's the only thing that seem to work on my cystic acnes (alas my Yonka Juvenil did not work on these!)
I have put some things in my shopping cart but have taken down the PSF Retinol due to this post LOL
My cart currently contains the following :
- Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel (Sensitive)
- PSF StimuColl-C Intensive Eye Serum
- PSF 02 Rescue Serum
- JB Alpha Lipoic Acid Vit C Ester & DMAE Day Cream (phew what a long name)
- Cargo Blush (this is def safe LOL)
Is there anything else I should be on the lookout for when trying to conceive?
How about Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 (Argireline) and Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3 (Matrixyl), can I still use these? I wouldnt mind stopping my Relax-A-Line but I would totally hate to give up my PSF Phyto-Lift Eye Gel
Thanks ladies ! |

Poppy,
I would take your products to your doctor if you can. I did and he told me I could use things that I thought I couldn't. They have some kind of list. Any prescription vitamin A product was a no-no. But most of the stuff he said people were worried about does not go far enough into the skin to be absorbed into the blood stream.
Best to be advised by the doctor who you have entrusted to deliver your baby and take care of you during your pregnancy. |

Ladies,
It is best to check with your doctor regarding what products are safe to use. Each doctor has their own opinion. I know someone on MUA whose dr told her to continue to use renova during pregnancy and breastfeeding. So you never know...
There are also certain essential oils to avoid iirc. |

hi, there is a website under dermadoctor that i find useful..unfortunately i don't know why i am unable to post it. i have a message that says new members cannot post links. anyway, under the vitamin a section it says
"The use of topical vitamin A containing medications and skincare products during pregnancy and nursing is NOT recommended. Not only does this include prescription treatments Avita, Avage, Differin, Retin A, Renova and Tazorac but any OTC retinol or retinyl palmitate containing product as well. Generic names for the prescription meds include Adapalene, tretinoin and Tazarotene.
Oral use of large amounts of Vitamin A and its derivatives, like Accutane, are known to cause birth defects. While this theory was extrapolated on to topical vitamin A creams like Retin A (as it was one of the original products available), to my knowledge, there have been no known birth defects from the accidental use of Retin A during pregnancy throughout the 20 plus years of its use. That has sparked some controversy regarding whether women should truly avoid it, but for safety's; sake it is still considered prudent to avoid the use of all topical vitamin A products during pregnancy as well as during nursing. Let's face it, nothing is as important as the health of your baby, so it's; worth the wait."
i have this page bookmarked because i tend to forget what we are allowed to put on our skin/nails/hair! HTH. |

My doctor said the same thing...that I should stop my tazorac at least three months before trying to conceive. She said that retinols are fat soluable and take that long to completely leave the body after you stop using it.

Hi Poppy
NewBeauty Magazine did a piece on preg and breastfeeding safe skincare. Unfortunately benzoyl peroxide and salycilic acid are out... boo. The piece did say glycolic acid was OK. I don't know about the Matrixyl, though I did find a question and answer at Dermstore saying it was likely ok but ask your Obs. Everyone's going to say that.
Rose hip oil and some other skin oils contain vitamin A, too so take care.
Try and get enough nutrients in diet to feed yourself and the growing bub, which will do much to prevent you losing skin nutrient and therefore skin quality because the bub is getting all the nutrient. I have had two pregnancies and didn't watch my diet in the second so much. That's my tip to all pregnant ladies trying to keep their skin healthy. But screen any supplements you want to take with your doc first, I know, a lot of work but it does all have an effect. |

Talk to your doctor about these products and ingredients. I wouldn't recommend benzoyl peroxide ever! It breaks down into free radicals on the skin. |
