This happened to me when I go to beautician, she always try to put my self down to sell her products . Therefore I bought products from her. Spent too much money even though those products weren't worth at all. She doesn't even refunded . Right now, I stop going to her and following my routine. My face become better than it was before. |

I think we've all been sucked in once before, and usually this is what has prompted us to join this forum in search of the best (and peer-reviewed) skincare products. |

My line is: I am using products prescribed by a dermatologist. As soon as I can switch to regular products, I will consider yours. |

I HATE it when people put you down to sell their products. My old hairstylist used to do that and it drove me crazy. She told me how horrible my hair was and tried to sell me things to 'repair' it, but I never bought anything. Apparently she forgot that I never bought anything and started telling me how wonderful my hair looked and that her products were doing a wonderful job!!! You should've seen her face when I told her I was using burt's bees. |

That is SO true Chimera, a hairsytlist NEVER tells you your hair is in good condition when they think you're not using their products.. its a rule.. even if your hair is fabulous, they will tell you it FEELS dry... so funny.. You can have a million people telling you they love your hair but the second you go to a stylist suddenly they have the cure for your ailing hair... riiiiight. |

I know, it's a real peeve of mine. I also had one stylist insist that I had colored hair. I said noooo I haven't colored my hair in TEN YEARS. Believe me all of the colored parts were long gone. She kept insisting that the bottom half of my hair was color damaged. She wouldn't believe me that my hair gets lighter at the ends from the sun. What is with people? |

I haven't had a facial in years but the last person I went to was very honest. When she was analyzing my skin she asked me what I was using. I told her that I was using Serious Skin Care and she replied, "your skin looks great, keep using it". Not the typical response that I was expecting. |

That's great Yen at least you found someone nice in these business.
At first time I went to her with my mother. She told me that she will charge for my facial $40 then for some reason my mother had to leave early. While she was doing me a facial she told me, " I have to clean your face well because you are doing first time, so give me $60. I cannot refuse it . At least they have to do the right skin type of facial but this woman use same products for everyone. My skin is very sensitive, it will look ok for one day then it breakout a lot I am not saying all beautician are bad but most of them try to earn money from others.
Everyone say to me I look better with long hair but whenever I go to her, she says cut your hair because long hair don't suit you. I felt in her words and cut my hair without consulting others. I was looked like weird person . When my hair grew back she asks me again to cut it then I said I will cut it later.
After a long time I went to her to thread my eyebrow and some fuzzy hair on my upper lip. Her friend was there too but suddenly she was talking with her about my self that I have hair on my upper lip . I don't like when people talk behind me. I cried a lot when I reached home. Then I thought ok I will never ever go to her.
I searched a lot on Internet to remove these stupid fuzzy hair and I found this Epicare product. After I used this I got breakout so I asked this woman about it. She has same skin type of problem like my self. She helped me a lot, right now I am using the products she recommended to me ( she doesn't sell those products). My skin become better though. Although I am happy that I could learn more about skin products on Skin Care Forums too. |

After all this it really makes me wonder what IS the best response to an overly pushy or rude stylist/ facialist? I like the one about I'm using prescription products but that doesn't work with a hair stylist (... or maybe.... followed with a quick "I'd rather not go into details"... ) |

Well, I suppose that it is possible to have a «yucky» scalp condition that is invisible to the untrained eyes... Is it? |

I hate to say this, but I refuse to get my hair cut professionally. I cut it myself. I have also never gotten a facial (and don't plan to) after I have heard/read so many horror stories about either inexperienced or uncaring (or both) 'professionals' that screw up people's skin.
It seems kind of blasphemous to write that on a spa board, but its the truth. I have had so many bad experiences getting my hair cut, sitting in the stupid chair wearing the stupid smock and trying to hold back tears only to know I'm going to have to Pay for the disservice in the end. I haven't gotten my hair cut at a salon since I was in high school.
My hair is very thick and wavy (with a tendency to curl) although I wear it straight. Every time I told those people, "no, my hair is actually curly, please be careful, and it needs to be dried right away" it was like they either weren't listening or assumed I was lying, I guess. I can only imagine how that would transfer over to a facialist! "My skin is in a transition period right now. I have found that I react badly to products containing X, and have had good success with the following methods". Haha, right.
My wallet and I would rather stay at home with our personally researched and customized goodies, thank you.
Note-This is not to say there aren't great salons etc out there with great people working for them...it's just a gamble I would rather not take! I'm too old to cry at the hairdresser.
Sharmy - I am so sorry you had this terrible experience. I'm sure you are a beautiful person and great care of yourself. You have no reason to feel bad about yourself. In my experience, the type of people that put others down are either A. Jealous or B. The type of people that need some sort of personal redemption that they get through belittling others. Yes, maybe in this case it was for the sake of her making more $$, but it may even be why she's in the profession to begin with. I am glad you had good success in the end with the Epicure lady helping you. I hope you find even more support here! |

Good for you... I do the same thing these days. But I've been trained in haircutting.... even before I was though I would at times cut my own hair. I have long wavy hair as well (and when I used to go in to get in professionally cut would wear it straight as well!!)... I cut alot of peoples hair, mother.. friends.. all people with really long hair... and they love it because they know I only dust...I KNOW what long haired people want with their hair and its NOT a huge cut.... I have developed different angles of cutting (and the style to put hair in while cutting.. geez this is hard to explain without showing) long hair to give different looks and must say theres nothing better than cutting hair yourself or getting it done by someone whos not trying to chop of a ton of it or sell you products. |

I wish I know how to cut my hair too. I don't have much luck with stylists. Also my hair is wavy, they could never cut it right. The cut always turned out different from what I wanted. I love straight hair but could never keep it straight. When it's humid, my hair looks even worse. For those with wavy hair, how do you manage to keep them straight? Thanks. |

Thanks, PhoebesMeow! My hair is long so that makes cutting it easier...and thick so if I do light layers around my face or something even if I mess up it's easy to fix. Last year I cut bangs for the first time and I got a lot of nice compliments! I'm not trained in cutting hair, and I would never attempt anyone else's...but I'm at expert at mine !
Tidieu - My hair actually lost quite a bit of it's curliness/waviness/poofiness during the last few years. Thank goodness. Keeping it long helps to pull some of the wave out of it naturally. But, when it was still wild, my routine was this (I'm not saying this is good for your hair...mine always looked healthy though):
Pantene ProV shampoo/conditioner
Towel dry/brush out as soon as I got out of the shower
Apply Thermasilk mousse all over
Blow dry (this used to take SO long!)
Then I would take a large barreled curling iron and go around all the sections of my hair, straightening out the top part, curling the ends under. I would pull the completed sections back in one of those claw clippies to keep them separate. I would put the mousse on again for each section right before I put it in the curling iron...I know this sounds harsh, but I rarely had breakage/split ends. Might just be my hair though.
Total time=Approx 1 hour
But Now...
All I have to do is blowdry it, then I use large hot rollers to add a little volume/dimension. Everyone makes fun of me though for using them. I don't care, I love 'em.
-Or-
If I want it Really straight, I use the Jade straightening iron I recently picked up cheap at Marshall's after blowdrying. It's like the Chi everyone always talks about. Gets my hair poker-straight in minutes, and Lasts! Then if I know it's going to be humid/rainy I apply a shine serum to help discourage poof.
Total time=Approx 20 minutes |

Thank you so much Olyn!
I thought about the straightening iron but have not tried it because I was afraid it may cause breakage/split ends if I use it too often. Also, the Chi was expensive and I am not sure the cheaper one would work without damaging the hair. Since it worked for you, I will give the straightening iron and Thermasilk mousse a try.
I don't know if the Jade iron is available in Canada but will search for it. |

I am so sick and tired of stylists screwing up my hair so I just cut it myself as well. Even if I make a mistake it's still not nearly as bad as if I would get a stylist near my hair. And believe me I have tried to find a stylist. I have tried so many I have lost count. |

What is is with pushy salespeople? I hate when they do that. If someone tries to push their crappy product on me I politely refuse. If they continue to insist I become more adamant with my refusal. If they so dare try to belittle me just so they can sell me a useless hair product or cosmetic, etc, I would turn it around on them and just say to them "Well, to be honest, I don't really care for your look so I think I'll stick with what I'm doing as I've only received compliments from everyone else that actually matters". Rude? Sure, but so are they. I think the best medicine to cure them of their ignorance and classless behaviour is to stand your ground and not be intimidated into buying or using something you don't want or need or allow yourself to be taken advantage of. Eventually, if enough people use this approach, then I'm sure that pushy salesperson, stylist, what have you, will change their "promotional technique" and become a little less obtuse and more polite to clients. Sheesh. We're already paying for a service. Should we pay for insults too? Isn't that what family is for - free criticism? LOL Well those are my two cents. |

Also, the straightening iron I have is the one by Wigo. I think at regular price it compares to Chi but I found I for around $30 . |

wow. i know that i'm lucky to have the hair dresser i do, but now i feel really great! not only has she always been wonderful about cutting my hair, she's suggested products to me that she doesn't even sell. once, because i was putting blue streaks in my hair and she wanted me to use good stuff that she didn't have, she called the beautician supply store to let them know that her "assistant" was coming in to buy some colour and a few assorted things. that way i got to buy my hair stuff at the discounted/un-marked-up stylist price.
however i have had two bad waxing experiences--one where they told me it took longer than "expected" and so charged me more and the other... well... i'm not even going to get into how unprofessional she was. |

That's one awesome stylist, unfortunately most are definitely not like that. If I ever worked in a salon, I'd like to think that's how I'd be...
ANyway, I hate to hijack this thread but everyone's talking about straightening irons and I'm going to have a look for this Jade one.. is it ceramic?? Wait, I'm seeing a bunch of Jade straighteners when I googled.. is it Revlon or Wigo that makes it? I'm confused...Also, has anyone ever tried the straightening iron from the Sharper Image? |

I haven't tried the ones that you mentioned. I have a Babyliss ceramic hair straightener and I love it. It comes with temperature control and a long cord. |

Mine is Wigo Jade...it is the only one I have experience with but I would imagine they are all pretty similar. It heats up in about 10 seconds! It is supposed to not be damaging to your hair. It came in a cylindrical tin, and I grabbed mine at Marshall's but I know one of my friends got hers at TJ Maxx. Also I have seen them for cheap on ebay. I think it retails for around $140 at regular price. Mine was $30 something. When I got mine I liked it so much I went right back the next day and got one for my sister.
I also apologize for hijacking this thread!
Here is what mine looks like:

I guess I'm lucky that my husband is a trained stylist and is willing to cut my hair. It's been a long time since I've had my hair cut at a salon. I don't remember a lot of rude stylists, but I also had never found one that I liked what they did enough to become a regular with them. One I went to when I was a teenager kept talking about how bad and drying herbal shampoos are like chamomile etc. and how they destroy hair. He was so rough though. I always enjoyed getting my hair cut cause it was relaxing and felt good. But not with him, it was painful and horrible, pulling at my hair etc. Good thing at the end it was a good looking cut at least. Never would go back though. I don't remember any being aggressive in pushing their products but when they would just talk about them or make recommendations I'd just listen and take a look at them later. Only a few times would I buy anything. They'd usually have the standard salon products on shelves. Now days though there are only a handful of hair products that I would use and am into all natural, so I wouldn't even bother with professional recommendations.
I wouldn't mind going again at some point just for something different from someone who is up on current trends and techniques, since my husband hasn't done it professionally in over 15 years. It's great though, I just show him some photos and he's done in 10 min. I've never been disappointed and he's never made me cry because he just gives me what I ask for rather then pushing a style or cut that the stylist wants to do. I wish I knew how to do it myself, but it's a lot harder I think, and to see the back etc. He did explain it to me once, but I totally forgot what he said 5 min. later. And I don't know how to recognize certain techniques. Like I'll say that I want layers like in this photo, and he'll tell me it's not layers just cut at an angle. Since my hair grows so fast, I'm never really worried if I don't like something I try. I read parts of the long hair community forum, but I don't really get why people want their hair that long. I guess it looks good on some people with nice thick hair. Mine is too thin though and too straight, and kind of on the oily side. It was down to the middle of my breasts but I couldn't wait to get rid of it. |
