Hey there,
I'm looking for a physical sunblock that won't aggravate my oily-acting, currently troubled skin. I believe that I am sensitive to the newer formulations--helioplex, etc.--and am not sure which way to turn.
I understand that physical sunblocks tend to make one look ashier (certainly me as I am East Indian) but I can't give up sunscreen and I can't use the products that melt into the skin.
Can anyone help? |

Hi PRS, I feel your pain. Frankly, I think it is nothing short of negligence that beauty magazines always push all these chemical sunscreens and never ONCE warn that many people are sensitive to them. It took me AGES to figure out that the chemical sunscreens were to blame for my skin turning red and feeling like it was burning whenever I put on sunscreen before going to the beach, etc. But, once I switched to sunscreens that contain zinc and titanium dioxide, my skin did a complete 180--- my problem was solved! My all-time fave sunscreen is Clarins UV Plus SPF 40. This sunscreen contains only titanium dioxide, so it won't irritate your skin at all. It's VERY pricey (like 40 bucks, ouch), but it melts into your skin so invisibly, 5 minutes after you put it on, it's like you never applied anything. It's never sticky or oily, and if anything it makes my skin look better--- I find I need less powder when I use it. If 40 bucks is just way out of your price range, I've heard that DHC sells a sunscreen for more like 25 dollars that is supposedly similar, and you can request a sample of it with any DHC order. Lastly, you can also try Colorscience's sunforgettable--- it's a translucent powder that contains on Zinc and Titanium Dioxide, so it protects your skin with zero irritation. HTH!! |

Hi manslayerliz, where do buy the Colorscience sunforgettable, never heard of it before. I am very interested in buying this since my skin cannot tolerate chemical sunscreens as well. Thank you. |

Manslayerliz, you are so awesome !!! Thanks for your Clarins rec. I think I'll go for it because I'm 39, I need suncreen and I've wasted tons of money on stuff that freaks my skin out so $40.00 sounds cheap to me, right about now |

PRS- You will not be sorry you tried the Clarins! It's my holy grail! I swear, I went through like 20 sticky, gooey, non-chemical sunscreens before I found that little gem. It feels like pure silk going on--- just love it!
sassy180- you can find Sunforgettable right here at EDS--- how convenient, right?^-^ |

I have oily/acne prone skin in summer too, I used to use Skinceuticals Physical Defense spf30. If I remember correctly, it was ZnO based. I can't say it was too light, but I could bear it in summer, it did not give me breakout either. |

I am using the skinceuticals SPF30 as well. I like it. It doesn't break me out and keeps me moisturized but not oily, and I have oily skin. It goes on very thick at first but sinks in nicely. |

I like Shiseido’s Anessa SPF 43 with 14.8% zinc oxide & 5% titanium dioxide.
(available in Asia)
DHC’s White Suncreen SPF 25 has a similar texture like Clarins SPF 40.
It has 10% zinc oxide & 5% titanium dioxide and its price is also cheaper.
Two more on my To Try List:
1. Fancl SPF 30 14% zinc oxide & 5% titanium dioxide
2. Topix Glycolix Elite SPF 30 17% zinc oxide |

I don't know if you can get it where you are, but I've tried Megan Gale's 30SPF Zinc moisturiser. It's nice, feels like a zinc based suncream to apply, but doesn't feel like you're wearing "sunscreen". I've worn it under make up. I have big pores and a tendency to get oily (well I was always oily til I found OCM) and I've had no problems here. Haven't worn it daily here as it's winter and I'm rarely in the sun, I think what little time I am outdoors would be good for my skin to have some sun just now.
Will be using the Megan Gale stuff everyday when Spring rolls round. BTW, it's $22.95 for a tube, I think that's 30mL.

My favorite sunscreen is Epicuren Zinc Spf 20. I have used this one for many years and it is very soothing to my sensitive skin. I cannot use any chemical sunscreens. |

Manslayerliz, (cute name BTW )
Do you put the Clarins on your bare skin and then use moisturizer or can you put it on over moisturizer? I have heard in the past that you can put physical blocks over other things, but I want to be sure.
Thanks! |

alilicious- I have oily skin, so I don't need much in the way of moisturizer in the summer, so a lot of the time I just put it on my bare skin and then put my makeup over it. BUT on drier days, I put a moisturizer on first, and then put the Clarins over it. The clarins actually reduces some of the shine from the moisturizer, so I really don't need much powder when I use it, which is nice. HTH! |
