This past week I was suffering from severe tooth pain & was only able to "eat" those meal replacement drinks. Yesterday I went to the dentist & had my 1st root canal. OMG! It took over an hour for them to freeze my mouth so that that could work on it. I know I'm being a wuss about this (especially when I hear what people have gone through "in the old days"), but it hurt, and still hurts!
Today I look like a chipmunk on one side & I can't eat anything cuz my mouth is still too sore.
I guess the upside of this right now is that the swelling really plumps up the fine lines & I lost 4 pounds! |

And the moral of the story is to go to the dentist regularly and look after your teeth and you won't need a root canal. |

Don't feel bad kls-- my mom has always taken excellent care of her teeth and she still had to have a root canal. Having any kind of mouth surgery is pretty much the worst thing I can think of. I hope you feel better soon, you poor girl! |

I recently had a root canal and it didn't feel much different from having a filling except my dentist does it in 3 appointments. Maybe that is the key to it being painless?
I have to say here I love to get hopped up on laughing gas/Nitrous Oxide. I request it everytime I go to the dentist. |

Ouch I can feel the pain. I'm so scared of going to a dentist and still haven't gathered the courage to have my wisdom tooth removed. |

Hey, I'm in the middle of a root canal right now! I've had the first part done--the part where they drill into your tooth and hollow out the roots. It's not so bad with the laughing gas.
I'm scheduled to go back for the permanent filling next week. I'd love to put this off for a month or so. It's so expensive and I don't have dental insurance. Does anyone know how long the temporary filling will last? |

kls, I totally feel your pain about the root canal. I hope your dentist was good. I had a root canal done on the same tooth twice. The dentist didn't do a good job the first time and one of the roots was still infected. I had to get a second root canal a year later. My tooth also chipped twice. I switched dentist after the second root canal. I had a crown put on it and less than a year later, I was experiencing the most horrible pain. My current dentist told me that my tooth was infected because when my last dentist drilled too deep and cracked my tooth (curving part before the roots). She suggested that I could go to a root canal specialist which would be expensive or have it extracted. I opted to have it extracted. The only good part about this entire experience is that I got a better dentist. She always gives me the options and tells me the prices before hand. Also, she does a very good job.
BTW did you take any Advil for the pain? |

my sil had a root canal about 1 year ago and still has the temporary crown on. In some cases it could fall out (I'm not sure that her's has) but you can just go to the dentist and they'll put a little more adhesive on for you. |

I really should have gotten the laughing gas!
I do take care of my teeth, had work done on that tooth last year. Yesterday they removed the filling & found a crack- that's where all the pain was coming from. And I don't know what it's going to cost yet, I'll get billed when they put the permanent filling in (probably a week from now). I have an awful feeling that it's going to deplete my "EDS fund"!
Thanks for the comforting replys, I was starting to think I would have gotten more sympathy by saying I popped a zit! |

The temporary filling doesn't last that long. Not to mention that your tooth will be very weak. You'll notice the colour changing over the upcoming weeks. It's best to put a crown over it soon. I know from experience after chipping the tooth twice. I feel your pain about the cost too. I had a 10% coverage for the root canal and no coverage at the time when I got my crown. |

I'm going to talk to my dentist about postponing it. In the meantime, I've been chewing almost exclusively on the other side.
Yes it hurts, but you really have no other option. My dentist is fairly conservative. She knows I want the least invasive work done and want to keep as much of my natural teeth as possible. Trust me--not all dentists share that philosophy!
Several (~8 or 9) years ago I went to a dentist and he wanted to crown almost all of my back teeth. (I think he wanted a new boat, airplane or some other toy ) Needless to say, I didn't go back to him. This is the first problem I've had since then.
Many people in their 40s are having issues with their teeth now. It's because when we were kids, (30-something years ago) dentists drilled out too much of the tooth with fillings. Over the years, those teeth developed cracks from being so weak. I have several friends experiencing this.
I recommend pain pills and definitely do the laughing gas! And try to hang on to your own pearlies as long as possible. |
