Hi,

After lurking here for a couple of months, I decided to take the plunge and register. Thanks to this forum, I've found Dr.H. I currently use DHCC + clarifying toner. I was wondering about adding the Quince Daycream under my Bobbi Brown tinted moisturizer. Have combination skin with occasional breakouts on forehead and at sides of nose (in a triangle!). Any advice? And would it be worth switching toner when my clarifying one runs out?

Thanks.

Hello and welcome!

Sorry that I can't actually give you any advice as my skin is different to yours and the only Dr H I use is the mascara and face powder. I just wanted to say hi! Very Happy

Hi Agent00CAT,

Welcome!

I'm not sure where your from but as it is summer in quite a number of places...are you sure you want to add an additional moisturizer into your routine? I know you mentioned the Bobbi Brown is a tinted moisturizer (I'll guess you use that instead of foundation), but that sounds like asking for trouble to me! Smile

Also, what kind of toner were you thinking of switching to? Toner seems to be the one thing (for me, at least) that I seem to get pretty across-the-board results with, regardless of brand/type (although some can be more drying than others).

Thanks for the greetings and the replies! Very Happy
I live in the US (Boston). I was thinking of switching to the other Dr. Hauschka's toner (I don't remember the name). The BB tinted moisturizer is in lieu of foundation; I find it to go on patchy at times - hence the quince underneath.

Hello again,

May I ask if you use a primer? If you are not using one before applying your tinted moisturizer and it's going on patchy this would definitely help. I know this will sound silly if it is the first time you've heard it, but I (and numerous others at EDS) use Monistat chafing gel as a primer. It is basically a clear silicone based gel that creates a smooth, silky, and matte surface for you to apply your makeup on. I like it because I find that it also helps to prevent makeup getting in to my pores as much...it seems to create a breathable barrier that helps your skin retain it's natural moisture while also helping to prevent debris from clogging your pores. It is not absorbed into your skin like a moisturizer.

I have not used the Quince day cream, but again, because it is summer it isn't a step I would personally add to my own regimen unless I felt like I needed the extra moisture. I only say that because you mentioned you have occasional breakouts and layering too many moisturizing things on for me is what clogs my pores/causes breakouts, especially in the summer. I'm not advocating Not using a moisturizer, as personally I do use some type of moisturizer throughout the year...I'm just suggesting you try the primer route first.

That said, if the moisture is really what you are after and you want to try the Quince cream (I have heard good things about it), you could just try it to see if you like it. If it's too much then you can use it when the season changes! I definitely find I have to tweak my skincare routine depending on not only what season it is, but also the environment I am most exposed to (ie indoors/outdoors, Air conditioning/Dry heat etc). Anyway, that way if you like it you can incorporate it into your morning routine at that time.

I also do my best to add 1 new product to my routine at a time, that way I can see if my skin reacts to it. So if you want to try the cream, or the primer, or switch toners...best to try them one at a time!

Sorry for the long post, I have a habit of getting wordy. Hope it helps, though!

Smile

Thanks. This makes sense. I'll look into the primer. I think I have a tube of Laura Mercier Primer from my wedding knocking about in a drawer. I guess that's the reason I've been thinking of primer for "special" occasions! Smile

The point about the environment is also well taken. I work in a windowless office ( Sad ) with the centrally regulated air cond on too high and consequently have a small desk heater to keep me from freezing. I've added a humidifier also. Not an ideal situation...

Hi Olyn,

Thanks for checking in. The primer seems to be helping in the application!!! Smile But everything is disappearing within a few minutes of me stepping outside - it's unusually hot here. I'm thinking of trying a different primer - possibly the one you mentionned. I'll aim to find a sample on Saturday. Thanks again.

Hi, Agent OO! You actually sound a lot like me and my routine.

I like the Quice lotion and it is nice and light. I think if your skin needs a little extra something, this is perfect under the BB moisturizer. I also use the BB tinted moisturizer and I find it nice but not that moisturizing. I have combo skin with breakouts. I use an oil (either Dr. H Normalizing Oil, rosehip seed oil or my own DIY Ylang Ylang oil) before I do my moisturizer in the morn. Sometimes, I just skip the Quice lotion after the oil because I don't feel I need it. I think if I used my BB moisturizer after the oil, I tend to not use the Quince. I've also been using Shiesedo's SPF 45 foundation (in the blue bottle) this summer and I will put a little more moisture on my skin before I put that on since it can be mattifing and drying.

As for the clarifying lotion, I am going to make the Apple Cider Vinegar/Green Tea toner to use next to compare the two (from Carekate's DIY recipe). The Dr. H toner is expensive and if the AVC toner is just as good, I'd rather save the money to buy another lotion or the mask.

Hope that helps!

Just to update that I've found THE primer - It's Smashbox. Way better than the Laura Mercier I have. Haven't tried the Monistat yet but I'm happy with the Smashbox. Thanks for the primer suggestion, Olyn.

I've been putting a little bit of Quince day cream underneath the primer. It says to wait 20 minutes though...TWENTY minutes???!!!

Also tried the ACV but my eyes water from the vinegar...so still tweaking.
