Well I'm coming to the end of my Eve Lom. I did use it when it first came out but you know how it goes... 
It is amazing, my skin has changed a lot. I like using a cleansing balm. I find it difficult to find a good cleansing product, they either clog my pores or don't take make up properly. Also normally it feels like such a faff but it's nice with a balm and a cloth. (Except for this my products are Peter Thomas Roth - huge fan)
The only thing I'm not that happy about is the petrochemical stuff.
So
Except for Eve Lom, what are the best balms people are used?
So far, I can think of these balms:
Liz Earle
Neil's Yard Rose
Organic Pharmacy Carrot
Spiezia
Anyone used these? How did you get along with them? Any others I've missed out?

I have never tried any of them but would probably go for either the Organic Pharmacy Carrot or the Neal's Yard Rose  |

Fresh has a cleansing balm with Lemon oil, but unless you have oily or combo skin I wouldn't recommend it.
It smells divinely of lemon, but not the harsh lemony smell you get with household cleansers, very refreshing. Like a lemon cake or something.

I used the Eve Lom aswell but haven't tried any of the others. Many other brands have since come out with their own versions. Lots of people like the Boots Time Delay one, but I didn't think it was a patch on the Eve Lom one.
The other one I've heard of is the Amanda Lacey Cleansing Pomade. I've never personally tried but it looks nice |

Daisy, i'm on the same postition now: I've been using Eve Lom for ages, and i really like it - except the petrochemicals in it.
I'm considering to try trilogy's or kosmea's cleansing cream (both with rosehip oil).
also tempted by OP's carrot . . . |

Me too, I was a devoted EL user, but the chemicals ended putting me off (that and the lumpy hard bits that kept forming in the jar. ouch)
Neal's Yard rose balm is my lemming. A member was going to get me a jar, but he disappeared from the boards  In Japan the stuff costs MORE than double the UK price 
The OP Carrot one sounds good too, and once the summer heat goes I am planning to get their travel kit to try it. (I can HIGHLY recommend their rose gel cleanser for a gentle, luxurious morning cleanse by the way)

Tiger, i noticed your post about OP's rose gel cleanser few days ago and it sparked my interest : is this a foaming cleanser ?

I have used the Eve Lom and shortly after moved on to the Amanda Lacey - which actually was better. She uses no petrochemicals and it contains calendula.
I tried the Organic Pharmacy but found it clogged my pores and I developed whiteheads. The scent of it is very similar to Eve Lom - Amanda Lacey's has a very pleasant scent.
Amanda Lacey has a water softener product that is wonderful for your rinse water or for the bath. I also like her moisturizers . She turned me into a Rosewater addict .
Of the 3 i would say Amanda's is the best. |

| I'd really like to speak up for the Burt's Bees Orange cleanser. I have used Eve Lom before but I think the Burt's Bees is more pleasant to use. It is in essence the same thing - Oil Cleansing Method. |

I use Liz Earle, it's a fantastic cleanser. I've used it since I was 18, although I use other cleansers on and off I always come back to this cos it actually works on my very combination skin.  |

I was about to type that I too would be a little wary about putting shea butter on my face instead of my body, then I noticed that it's in the Molton Brown stuff!
So it's obviously okay for my dry skin.
Such a shame you can't use it, la vie en rose. As you say, it seems to be just about everywhere these days. |

No, it wont give a huge foam, but it will emulsify to a "lather" when you add water after massaging in. That being said, one day I applied it to a wet face and was surprized how much of a rich lather I got. My bottle is about 3/4 gone now (started daily use in March) and I am counting the days till autumn weather so I can order more (and going to get the mint one for DH)
Louise: Liz Earle sounds good.. lucky I cannot get it here.... same with Amanda Lacey (never even heard of that one)
Mabsy: so Burt's orange one is the same consistency as Eve Lom? If so I might give it a go too! |

Well i had to go out this afternoon for an errand, so I ..er.. nipped into Harvey Nichols for fifteen minutes  So a little update from me.
Lady in the Beyond Beauty section was very helpful.They don't sell Eve Lom in this section (although they do across on the 0floor in the Space NK concession) but she talked to me about the cleansing balms they had as well as others they don't sell, e.g she mentioned that Laura Mercier have just brought one out. They had the Burts Bees one but it's not a balm. Smells nice though. Has lots of different extracts in it. They don't have Neals Yard but I am tempted by that one most but I suspect it doesn't have any decongestant properties(is that right anyone who uses it?)
The best ones the lady thought were Spiezia, Amanda Lacey and the brand new one by Vaishaly (the 'famous facialist' like Amanda Lacey), this last is a pump action so bit nicer than a pot. It was also the most expensive at £59 (!!!) but it was 150ml, the others were smaller.
I asked her which one she thought had the best decongestation properties. She thinks the best is Amanda Lacey. It has little bits of palm wax in it that exfoliate your skin. I could feel them in the balm and was a little bit worried about this as i don't like granular things and use a glycolic wash in the mornings 3 days a week but she said it was really gentle not granular. She also though the Vaishaly would be good for decongestant, but not Spiezia so much.
Although that's not what Spiezia say on their website (and you do sometimes have to wonder a little bit about commission in shops...)

Although saying all that I first heard of this brand while flicking through my friend's Beauty Bible and both editors said they used it. One of the editors is the very same Josephine Fairley. Now, I am inclined to trust her (although she does write for the Mail...!) but I do note that Spiezia is Soil Association and the same Josephine Fairley is connected to that organisation due to her company Green & Blacks with her hubby Craig Sams (he is/was also Wholefoods) and also she has some other 'green' business she started in the last couple of years - so it may be that she wants to help give a small company a leg up because of the Soil Association connection?
Or is that a (beauty) conspiracy theory?!
Have not bought anything yet as waiting for my Eve Lom to run out. |

It's not as solid as the Eve Lom, but I am speaking of the sample that Carrie sent me. It has a tendency to separate some of the oils out but you just mix it up before you use it. It is warming to the skin as well and smells like oranges - it's nice |

Mabsy, Burts Bees is making me curious, what sort of skin do you have? Do your pores get blocked easily with most products or are you a lucky one?! I am worried about it as oil based stuff like Shu Uumera (even the light one) leaves a film on my face, I might try get some samples of Burts Bees to check it out.
I have done some more research, and note that Ms Fairley now uses Vaishaly's balm as she has been going to her for facials for years.
But I have made a decision,. Thanks everyone for all your help.
I have decided that I should do some research for the greater good.
So when I run out of Eve Lom, I shall buy Amanda Lacey which should last a couple of months.
And when that runs out I shall buy Spiezia as nobody here seems to have tried that. That should last a month.
And will report back!!!!
I Would like to have gone for Neil's Yard but not convinced it's the best for cleansing. And OP has shea butter in it. |

I think I am probably one of the luckier ones but I still do get some clogged pores. I have normal skin, it used to be combination but somehow it just corrected itself over time.
The important thing with the Burt's Bees Orange Cleanser is to use a warm face washer to wipe it off. If you just try to rinse it off it will definitely be oily and will feel icky. |

I will ask for some samples.
I feel a bit sorry for Eve Lom. Her product is amazing and to be fair she seems to be the only person who says less is more and use the cleanser only and other stuff only if you need it. Everyone else says use the cleansing balm, then follow with x or y balm. But I just dont like all those petrochemicals. Chucked away my vaseline and Chanel lipstick today. |

i have used eve lom and liked it very much...currently I am using orange Cleanser which is good but the seperation issue is really pissing me off....even a lot of kneading is not enough and you have to put the tube standing on its cap(mine lies peacefully in a basket usually) so that the heavier part settles down.....And since I keep forgetting that it seperates I always squirt some oil before the memory goes  ...I know my mistake but a hassle nevertheless....and does that mean I am going to end up with a lot of oily part towards the end of tube....only time will tell....But I am not buying it in HongKong summers again  |

Just an update on my quest for the right cleansing balm.
These are the ones I've tried:
1. Eve Lom
best balm (but hate the petrochemicals)
2. Amanda Lacey
love the smell. Texture bit oily rather than 'balmy', also constant breakouts.Never experienced anything like it before! Don't know if that was 'purging', but it lasted 6 weeks, same as the pot. Pot didn't last that long, given cost. Might try again if I ever ditch the non natural products in my routine (my PTR glycolic stuff) in case it's using these together that was the problem.
3. Organic Pharmacy Carrot
Early days, 1-2 weeks. Nice texture. Takes make up off really well. No breakouts. Not sure if it's causing any congestion - as it felt the first few times like there is a residue, I've been making sure to do extra hot rinsing at the end.
These are other ones I've looked at:
Neil's Yard Rose - too rich for me
Spiezia - v interested in this one and looking forward to trying it. Anyone else interested, if you click through from beautybible.com to soorganic, you can get a 10ml test size for around £8.
Burts Bees - smells nice, but texture too oily and tube getting all creasy would annoy me
Liz Earle - just can't bring myself to use something I did many years ago when I was at university
Vaishaly - interesting. expensive (mainly due to large size). need to get up to Paddington to buy test sizes from her salon.
Trish McEvoy - big tube. glycerine based. looked a bit 'gunky'? bad review on makeupalley.
If anyone tries any of these, please let me know how it went!
