I have very very very dry and peeling lips. Sometimes they bleed. Looks awful!!!
Over the years I've tried Blistex, Chapstick, Labello, Carmex, Burt's Bees, Vaseline, Elizabeth Arden 8-hour cream, Neosporin lip repair (most effective but not enough), Dr. H lip balm, avocado oil, beeswax, beeswax+avocado oil, Kiehl lip balm, butter (!), Aquaphor, Dermadoctor lip balm, Vichy lipbalm and others I can't even remember. Anybody has further suggestions? Thanks in advance. oh, and I also am exfoliating with homemade AHA/BHA but nothing last for more than 20 minutes. Forget about lipstick/gloss...snif.

Hi Agent OO-CAT,

Sounds like you really have a tough task !! Try plain Linolin oil on your lips, they sell it in a tin can. Just an idea and hope it helps.

I use a lip exfoliator by Aloette and then use Aquaphor right after. I slather my lips in that stuff all day and put a thick coat on at night.

ETA: My friend brushes her lips every time she brushes her teeth and she says she's not had a problem with dry lips since. (she also puts on a balm right after)

Try L'Occitance Anti-Drying Lip Balm or Morgen Schick Supple Balm.

I always moisturize my lips before going to bed so I can wake up to soft lips.

I found the walgreens "lip enhancer" product thats supposed to be a ripoff of lipfusion to be the best product out there for getting and keeping my lips in shape. For some reason my lips peel and shed more than the average persons (I think) and its even worse when they're dry. I don't like the lip enhancer for what its for (a plumper used during the day) but rather a treatment I put on at night. My lips are always in perfect condition when I don't forget to use it. However if I go to visit the boyfriend for a week and forget it my lips turn to sandpaper. I swear its the best stuff I've found lately.... I just have to remember to use it or it shows.

Perhaps you are allergic to something in all the lip products you mentioned? How often do you exfoliate? I would maybe not exfoliate until I got some moisture into my skin. I would suggest something with shea or cocoa butter, something that is naturally protective. I would also suggest jojoba oil used maybe as an over night treatment.

Blistex Herbal Answer - the one in the tube, not stick. My lips went from dry and peeling to smooth and kissable Wink And it has spf 15.

Agent OO-CAT - could you be overexfoliating with the AHA?BHA? That alone could cause your lips to peel.

I swore I was the only one going through this horror. My lips are ALWAYS dry no matter what. Lately they've actually been better and looked hydrated. Basically I've increased my water intake a lot. Ever since I've been taking those HA pills it has plumped them and made them more hydrated also. One thing though, I stop using lip balm. It seems as though my lips have adjusted and like that I don't have to use lip balm any longer.

I have to agree, more water! Also, try not to lick your lips! I put vasaline jelly then brush with a baby toothbrush and put coconut oil on. This works well for me Cool.

There as a product called crack cream (it's actually a liquid), but my dad gets bad cracks on the corners of his mouth during the winter, and he swears this stuff helps.

Like Yen, I always put on a lip balm or something similar before bed. I've done this for years and tried a bunch of kinds. What's worked best for me are Carmex (can't stand the taste anymore though) and Neutrogena Overnight Lip Treatment.

CVS carried the latter, but I think it may have been discontinued. The Neutrogena Lip Nutrition® Vanilla Replenish Balm looks like it might be similar, but I'm not sure. The overnight lip balm had squalane and perhaps ha in it also. You may still be able to find it if there's a CVS near you.

I have found Crabtree & Evelyn's Overnight Lip Repair to be wonderful. My son has started "stealing" it nowadays from my vanity though and when I don't use it for a few days, my lips get really dry.

I haved chronic dry lips. They don't peel often, but feel very dry when I don't apply some type of moisturizer. Like many of you, I've tried many drugstore, high-end and homemade blams, moisturizers and treatments. My two favorite products: Prescriptive Lip Specialist and Murad Soothing Lip Therapy. I always carry at least one of these two products in my bag, and keep on my night stand. Others that I've used and continue to purchase: Rimmel Jelly Gloss--suprisingly moisturizing and not sticky plus a slight tint of color. Kiehl's Baby Lip Balm--convenient twist up tube that contains soothing hydrating oils.

Well, it's hideously expensive ($15 for a small tube), but the Trilogy lip balm is great. It is rose hip based but has lots of other good stuff in it. The amazing thing about it is...I put it on at night before I go to bed, and the next evening I still feel it on my lips (in a good way).

Another lip balm I really like is Epicuren lip balm (from Epicuren Discovery). It's also a bit pricey and hard to come by, but it works really well.

Thanks for all the suggestions and the support guys. I thought I was the only person with seriously dry lips on the planet!!!! I've been thinking about this today and I think that yes, I am guilty of licking my lips; I do it unconsciously. But I also think that I have a problem with allergies. I have rhinitis, which make me constantly blow my nose and I'm therefore constantly wiping the mouth area. (Until today I didn't think about this...) It would also make sense why I get spots near my nose - that the area is dry and irritated and buggy. I take anti-histamines and they may be contributing to drying the mucous membranes. I have dry eyes too. [I thought of Sjogren's syndrome but don't really wish to dwell on this.] I think I'll try the HA caps. Does anybody have further suggestions for something "internally"? Perhaps something homeopathic? Also, PhoebesMeow, can you tell me more about the Wallgreens product? Thanks again, everybody.

you may need to take some tablets, only cosmetics might not work. Complete B may work for you. OR you can do a lip mask. Apply a thick (every thick) layer of lip balm (I normally use Kiehl's lip balm # 1), then put a piece of cling on it. finally, covered by a hot towel. if towel cools down, put another one.
hopefully, it works on you.

ok, I'm pulling this thread out again. I've been trying the various suggestions over the last few months but still no luck. Winter is making my lips worse. Does anybody have further ideas?

OMG Agent,

For the past month or so, my lips have been horrid..literally horrendous. I peel a layer off EVERYDAY!!!! Shock

It's so gross, I have dried blood spots all over my lips from all the bleeding and it stings like crazy because it seems as though I'm peeling off layers that haven't even healed yet. I figured at this point and the severity of how dry my lips are lip balm is just not the way to go. The only thing the balm does for my lips is temporarily keep it a bit moisturized so the skin doesn't tear/rip and start to bleed again.

What I was doing as someone suggested on here was applying rosehip oil at night. I did that and let that dry and then put on Skinceueticals Antioxidant Lip Repair which isn't a balm, but more of a repair lotion sytem. When I do this I can tell my lips feel better, they're still dry, but they're healing. In the morning after I wash when I apply my emu oil+HA serum to the face I put that on my lips also. Throughout the day I try not to touch my lips at all, no balm and drink plenty of water. This really helps, but I get lazy at night and can only do the rosehip oil and my lip repair lotion for like 2 nights. I know it works, but it's just a matter of discipline at this point.

Hope your venture is going better than mine. With winter approaching I'm doomed if I can't get my lips somewhat healthy.

Hello gals,

I am very intolerant to cold, dry weather and can empathise with the lip skin sheet, peeling, bleeding lip syndrome.

To be honest I no longer have this problem since I started using Decleor balm a levres a year ago. I use the lipstick tube one as I travel alot and I wear it under lipstick/gloss. My lips have never been so smooth, soft and healthy pink. I think this was one of the few products I have used which actually got rid of a problem for good. I am never without it.

The one in the lipstick form does not come off easily. The balm also comes in a cream form which might be best for you if you want to try a sample andis more rich in texture.

There are lots of suggestions on exfoliating etc but make sure if you do this you hydrate after and drink fluids. If your lips are that dry any scrubbing will break the skin. If you want to exfoliate/hydrate gently I highly recommend Decleor Eye and Lip mask. It is a cream you leave on for some minutes.

By chance do you use strong mouthwashes with alcohols? Dry mouth syndrome can lead to dry lips. Also note that taking supplements like HA implies you need to drink MORE water so everything in moderation is fine. Aside from Decleor, putting a little avocado oil at night did also help but do note this oil is runny and you really cannot use it on the go.

I wish you luck with this. It is very painful when you have the peeling.

I've found my favorite lip balm at Wal-Mart. It keeps my lips so moist and soft. I love it. It's called Lip Vitamins lip balm in Vanilla Bean. It cost 1.49 and the ingredients are:
Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Beeswax, Jojoba Seed oil, Sweet Almond oil, Grape seed oil, Wheat Germ oil, Sunflower seed oil, Squalane, Tocopherol, Retinyl Palmintate, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, Benzyl Alcohol, Hydroxy-Citronellal, Citral Benzyl Salicitate, Cinnamal, Benzyl Cinnamate, Linalool, Benzyl Benzoate, D-limonene, Propylparaben

Thanks everybody for your answers. I feel your pain, ariesxtreme and Blacklace.

I tried the HA plumper from Walgreens but it didn't do much for me.

Decleor added to my list.

I tried Diderot's version of the lip balm on the DIY index - it goes on beautifully but wasn't able to help my chronically dry lips.

I take HA caps, drink a lot of water etc. Keep the good suggestions coming.

That's what I'm speaking of, someone with chronically dry lips like myself, lip balm just isn't the answer. I've tried them all too, it's a deeper issue than just the service being a tad dry. HA caps don't do anything for me, they did plump my lips, but as far as added moisture, nothing.

Agent OO-CAT, carekate has concocted a marvelous overnight lip balm treatment. She's gathering testers right now, so you should PM her. I have the same problem, and I'm anxiously awaiting my sample of it right now. Mine were doing better, but they're horrible right now. I have open sores in the corners of my mouth from dryness and irritation. Ouch!!
