.... have to sit on top of your papers when you are working? On another post, someone mentioned about her cats having the need to be right beside her no matter what she was doing.. and it got me thinking about on of my cats I had who used to drive me insane (in a good way, I loved her to bits).
Basically she felt she OWNED the kitchen table (yea, I know that is bad), though, she knew she was in trouble if she got up there at mealtime. Anyway, the table I used to have sat 8, so it was pretty huge. As a rule, she had the end where we never ate - that was her sleeping pozzie.
BUT the moment I would sit at the other end to study she would either come and plonk her ass down on my notepad or else lie stretched out in front of me - which was better, however she would then start to "play" with the pens.. pushing them around and closer and closer to the edge... till they went kerplunk. She would then stretch out and look over the edge and then proceed to start again with another one. She only ever did this when I was sitting there.
Is it an attention thing? like they don’t like to see you doing something when you could be playing or petting them?
This particular cat was VERY possessive - when we ate, she always slept on a chair at the table... but if we had a dinner party for 8 she would sit on the floor yowling (she was a VERY lound cat) till I got up and went out to get a chair for her. She also had a fit when my aunt came to visit once and put her handbag on the top of the scratching pole (which was where my cat liked to sit) - and it might have been understandable, except that the cat was asleep on the sofa at the time and only went nuts when she saw someone else using her pole. My aunt had to "apologize" and remove the bag and instantly my cat jumped up as it to say "MY pole, lady, MY pole".
So, any cat psychologists out there? |

I think this is an "attention thing", like come play/cuddle with me instead of that book or magazin or whatever. My ones do the same and sometimes drive me nuts with it...
I've had cats since i was a baby and sometimes i think they're not from this earth : we live on the 2nd floor but they hear when my hubby arrives from shutting his cardoor down on the street, etc., etc. Those animals are quite a miracle to me ... |

When my Moka was a kitten, my husband and I used to live in a condo building and we sometimes had to go read the newspaper in the sauna, because Miss Moka would crash into the paper or lie on top of it if it was on the kitchen table. Yep, it was for getting our attention. After all, she was home all day while we were at work and craved human company. |

I really don't think it's so much for the attention as it is to play. I think that when we're not around they just sleep (17 hours a day on average to be exact!). When we're there, they become more alert and find things that we use interesting and want to check them out. Hence, the saying "curiousity killed the cat". Also, cats LOVE crinkly paper/plastic bag noises and so they love to play/sit/lay on those things. That's one of the things I absolutely love about cats, except when it comes to wrapping presents!
To me when they want attention it's the obvious, sit in your lap, paw at you, cry, etc. But once they hear that crinkly noise, they can't help but go into "playtime" or "attack" mode. Cats are so awesome! |

My cat is an inside/outside cat, and when I'm at work she's usually outside hunting or checking out the neighborhood, but she can be anywhere, and as soon as I open a magazine, she's on top of it. I've taken to reading while soaking in the tub. It's the only way I don't have a cat on my magazine. |

This thread makes me so sad! It makes me miss my kitty Muttonchops. He was so sweet, he would always sleep with me and follow me everywhere, I couldnt so much as go to the bathroom without him following me! So nosey! He got out and ran away 2 years ago...the coolest thing he ever did was pee on my ex-husband...I loved that cat! |

I want to know why so many cats are obsessed with pens?
And the way to really get your cat's attention is to pretend to read a newspaper. They simply can't resist as Cat Law states that every newspaper in the process of being read MUST be sat upon. |

Since I hate my job right now, I thought I'd take a minute to list the things that crack me up about my cat. Feel free to share your funny feline antics as well!
My 8 year old FAT tabby cat Aussie (girl and I pronounce it the American way, not like "Ozzie") hates:
1. When I do dishes. She cries the entire time.
2. When I sneeze. She always looks up from her cat nap and gives me this go to h*** look and sometime a sharp "meow".
3. All human food and cat treats, with the very odd exceptions of saltine crackers, coffee grounds (it's like catnip to her) and her all time favorite...queso! Ah, she takes after her mamma!
My cat also randomly sits up like a squirrel when she hears a noise coming from another room. It's really funny, especially now that she can barely hold up her own weight.
Evertime she lays on the ground with her head up, she HAS to cross her front two legs. She looks so snobby that way but it's hilarious.
Well, that's about all I can think of for now. I'm sure there are a million others but those are the ones that stand out.
And don't you just love when they make the "stink" face? That's my favorite! |

OK lets see, Muttonchops would:
Sing "opra" on my bedroom windowsill if I was getting ready to go out. He was probably crying in distress, b/c he was such a mommas boy!
wedge himself inbetween me and my ex-husband in bed and push him away from me, would also shove his face inbetween us if we kissed.(man I shoulda listened to that cat!)
Refuse to take a treat from anyone but me.
Groom my ears and chew my hair.
Leave little kitty prints on my freshly washed car.
Sit on or in front of the TV if I was watching it.
Show his butt or turn his back on me if he was mad.
Bring me little birds and mice. |

I agree with TAMGirl...Muttonchops is an adorable name!! And peeing on your ex-hubby...LMAO! Sorry...that just struck me as hilarious...I can think of a few exes I'd like my cat to pee on!
Anyway, I think the paper thing is both play AND attention...at least it is for my kitty Linus. He loves to play with strings, toys, paper, etc...but he is also an attention hound extrordinnaire who cannot understand WHY hubby and I would want to do anything other than worship him 24/7. So...if we aren't properly adoring him, he will flop down smack in the middle of whatever we're reading or working on. One of my favorite photos (wish I could post it...but I'm a techno idiot) is of him sprawled across my husbands study materials. He was working on his MBA and Linus was not at all hip to being ignored while he hit the books!
Oh...and TAM...your kitty sounds a lot like mine! Linus LOVES human food...even fruit, which is kind of bizarre for a cat, I think. And I'm well acquainted with the "stink face", too...

My cat also sits on any book I'm reading, on the keyboard, on my lap the minute I sit down though rarely when I ask her to! She hogs most of the bed at night and we are too silly to move her and end up squashed in a corner. She's a chlorine addict and loves to lick my hair when I come back from the pool. She also likes tap water and makes us change her water bowl several times a day if she can (guess the chlorine thing). She goes to it, sniffs it and looks at us and we rush to empty it and bring it back while she's waiting regally. She loves loves loves canned tuna but only "chicken of the sea in freshwater', not "Sunquist" or other brands. She also had a particular brand she liked in the UK. (It's a treat which she doesn't get too often though before someone tells me it's bad for her). She knows the sound of a can opener and the fridge. She will occasionally deign eat sashimi grade tuna raw or slightly cooked (gourmet cat). We've installed a bird feeder infront of the window for her entertainement and she stands on her hindpaws and makes "monkey noises" whenever she sees a squirrel at the feeder. She sometimes burrows under the covers in winter to sleep during the day and all one can see is a hump in the bed. Oh, and she has amazing gorgeous whiskers and pads... ok, I better log off now and get back to the real world! |

I don't have any cats now, but when I was little I had a cat that would play with a rolled up ball of aluminum foil for hours. And one of my friends had a cat that would play dead. She would point her fingers at it like a pretend gun and say "bang" and the cat would drop. Her brother taught it how to do this.....boys |

My dog (a chihuahua)does this. I can't read a book or magazine or study without her either sitting on the book or whatever, or sitting and whining if I'm at the table. If I'm on the computer too long, she whines and wants to sit on my lap, with her head resting on top of my right wrist (the mouse-moving wrist, which makes it really tough! ) I don't really have any new insight, but I wanted to let you know that you're not alone, some crazy dogs do the same thing! |

I love all this talk about kitties! I think it's so cute that they all have their own personalities. Each of my three boys are so different. They really do rule the house. We make room for them on the bed, if they are sitting where we want to sit, we sit somewhere else. It's all worth it though... they are so adorable even when they are doing something bad. You just can't stay mad at them! And I love their expressions. One time we were catsitting my nieces female cat and these guys just didn't like her. You should have seen the dirty looks they would give her. It was hilarious! It's amazing how much expression they can have in their faces. |

My cat Snuggles (aka Precious, started calling him that after Lord of the Rings) loves to look out the screen door. He would sit by the door and meow until we let him look outside. If we ignore him, he'd walk up to you and meow really loud. One time he was looking outside and I felt chilly so I closed the door. He meowed for me to re-open it but I ignored him. He ran upstairs. I figured that he was in my bf's room and by the window (since I'm his mommy). I was right. I tried to pet him but he wouldn't let me. He wouldn't let me touch him for two days. |

My two cats have odd quirks. One loves to lick and lay on plastic bags. She goes nuts if you try to take it away from her. She just sits there on her bag or very near it for what seems like forever and licks it.
The other cat loves to chew on cardboard boxes. She loves the ones that she can hop into and chew from the inside but if it's small she'll sit next to it and chew it. She doesn't eat the cardboard she just chews/rips off tiny pieces and then spits them on the floor. I let her have a box every once in awhile for fun since she loves it so much.
They are also big talkers. The oldest has always been this way but the youngest started with this at about 1 year old when she saw that she could be understood better by me. The meow and raise their tones up and down, chirp, purr in certain ways etc... It's a real language! I joke with my boyfriend that I understand them completely and tell him that we have this psychic connection. He thinks we're (2 cats plus me) are crazy. |

Yes, our kitty also loves to sit on books or papers that are being read. I have to keep using the vacuum on my computer keyboard to get all the hair off it! She also likes to climb up on top of stacks of paper and use her back feet to kick them onto the floor. She acts all innocent while she's doing it, like "oops, I can't get any traction here", but it's so obvious it's on purpose.
One of her favorite games is to deliver stuff to us. Dirty socks or underpants, toys, hats, papers. If she brings us a piece of paper from one of our desks we must acknowledge immediately or she begins to shred it.
She also loves to play peekaboo:

Freefall, I LOVE your cat's markings. Females seem to be very big on delivering stuff (my mum's girl used to trot socks all over the house.. if mum folded washing she could not turn her back for a second or off would go the socks...). And yes, my Alice would be OH so innocent looking as he pen would go crashing down.. kind of "oops, how did THAT happen?!" breaks my heart not being able to have a kitty in Japan.

Hi TigerTim, We think she's pretty neat too! Her markings make all her facial expressions more comical.
Another of her tricks is drinking out of my water cup. I can't turn by back for a minute or she'll have her face buried in it. At night I keep a bottle of water by the bed because I wake up thirsty and I just know she will have had a sip if I leave a cup there!
Ick. I know where that tongue has been!

I call my cat "my little motor" as he is always purring and really loudly too. He has this thing about hiding behind curtains (he's doing it right now!). He just lies there and let's them drape over him. LOL He's also a big scaredy cat. For the longest time he would hate going outside - would stay crouched right by the door. But just recently I have been letting him out in the backyard as he keeps staring longingly out the screen door and he is becoming quite brave. He has even begun to roam around on his own in the yard without staying within 6 feet of the door. I've lately been letting him out for a while to get some fresh air and as soon as I bring him in he now sits at the sliding door staring outside meowing. I don't know where this came from all of a sudden as he used to hate being outdoors. He also plays fetch (for about 2 throws) and his favourite toys are his stuffed mouse and tiny kitten. |
