Hi everyone,

I'm so sorry I'm bombarding the board with questions. After this one I'll take a break-I promise!

I was wondering what people found to be more effective, salicyclic acid or benzoyl peroxide. I've used both in the past but, I can't remember how well I reacted to the benzoyl. I use salicyclic acid (in acne treatments) now and haven't gotten great results.

Thank you muchly!

I can't help too much right now... I JUST switched from using a salicylic acid product (Serious Skin Care's Daily Ritual Cleanser) to one containing benzoyl peroxide (Paula's Choice).

I made the switch because the SSC didn't seem to be effective any more. My Tzone was becoming increasingly oily and I was starting to break out at random intervals again.... I just started using the Paula's Choice Blemish Fighting Solution (2.5% benzoyl peroxide) on Monday.

Good news is I haven't had any NEW spots, but then again it's only been two days... And the couple small ones I did have seem to be just about gone now.

I plan on giving the new stuff a good month or so before I say whether it's working better or not... But it HAS to be better than what I was using before! I just hope that I don't eventually develop some kind of tolerance to the benzoyl peroxide too.

I believe the latter is more effective but more irritating.

I find bp to be more effective, but more irritating to me (like pp mentioned) - makes me peel.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
I thought the BP worked better for me but, I couldn't remember.
I used to use ClearLogix. GREAT stuff but, apparently it's off the market now. It was the only SA product that I found effective. I wonder if you can build up a tolerance to one?

I find that BP works best for preventing new pimples, and salicylic acid works better for blackheads, so I use both. I also use a product containing sulphur to clear up existing pimples.

marnie: What product do you use that contains sulphur?
I don't find anything works on blackheads except extraction. Am I just weird??

I found BP to be more effective though can be very drying even on my oily skin so i only use it as a on-the spot treatment

I prefer using a product that contains Salicylic Acid. Benzoyl Peroxide tends to make me breakout more.

For me, Benzoyl Peroxide is the only thing that prevents blemishes from forming. I like a salicylic peel for my nose, to refine pores.

BP keeps my acne at bay but I'm trying to switch to more organic products so I try to use SA now. I think all my other products keep my acne in check better than just one spot treatment type product. I spot treat overnight with a mask w/sulfur in it - like MB's drying mask, Proactiv Refining or even PSF Acne Mud Mask. The PSF works VERY WELL as a mask though especially after extractions to calm your skin down. Also BP bleaches my clothing.

BP causes me redness and irritation, I stopped using it immediately, I only used once so far.

SA broke me out, I dont know why.

i personally prefer BP for my acne prone skin. I use a 2.5% BP morning and night and it keeps the breakout at bay. Over 2.5%, my skin tends to peel and BP has been known to bleach fabrics as well. SA is more for blackheads but my skin hates salicilic acid although it feels soft afterwards and i got more blackheads from salicilic acid anyway. so far BP has made my backheads smaller and they "pop out" more easily when i do facials. i still looking for some miracle products to make blackheads disappear completely. the BP regimen i used is fromwww.acne.org (no affiliation and since it;s working for me, i think it;s fair to give it credit)

Thanks guys for the feedback, it's been great!
I've found a mask that has SA in it called Aveeno Clear Complexion. I very much like it. I tried it again last night (it's been 2 months) and I've noticed a decrease in the size of my current pimples, no new pimples formed, and it helped tone down some redness!

kel, sorry for the late reply. The sulphur product I use is Acnomel - a drugstore product, but I do find it helps get rid of pimples faster.
