Hi everyone, I have seen posts here before about work situations and everyone seems to offer really sound advice, so I would love to get your take on this. I started a new job two weeks ago and quickly caught this flue that everyone had. I spent the first week covering sickness and working over time. The next week I got the flue and still went to work. I am supposed to motivate these people and had absolutely no energy, just fighting of coughing fits and trying to do my job. I am now thinking it has worked against me and allthough people have seen that I am ill, I believe they see me as lethargic and without any spark. I am still feeling very weak and just hope I can turn this around... How would you approach this? I did say to someone today that they had not seen my most enthusiastic side yet as I had been ill and it was one of those cases where it was something I really wanted to say, but did not come out right. |

I think they will be understanding as they know that you've been fighting this flu. They will see how hard you worked that first week covering for other people. Once you're feeling better, they will see the real you. When I started my last job, about two months into it I came down with a BAD flu and was off work for a little while. I felt really bad and thought they would think I'm just a sicky and would think I would be always taking off sick time. But once I felt better I could let them see I was a hard worker! Once you are feeling better they will see how motivating you are and I really don't think these first few weeks will be detrimental to how they perceive you. |

Thank you Moonstarr, for sharing your experience. I think you did the right thing in taking some time off rather than struggling at work. I guess it is always difficult in the first few weeks and it takes a while before they really get to know you... I just worry that some people make judgements based on first impressions and really feel that I have not brought a lot to the table |

For you to even show up to work day after day even though you were dying of the flu, that shows alot. If these coworkers didn't think you have 110% than honestly, they are crazy. Lots of people would of called in sick but you didn't. You do the best that you can but don't put your health at risk. As long as you know your hard working than that's all that matters. Did your supervisor say anything to you in regards to you being sick? I mean did anyone say to you, oh maybe you should take a couple of days off to recover? |

Thank you qisme615, you really brought the point home here; nobody suggested I should go early, take a day off to recover, or even acknowledged my efforts. My supervisor said on the phone that I didn't sound very well and I explained that I have been trying to work through this flu, moving on swiftly she said the paperwork was not perfect. I am starting to get to grips with the company culture... I worked more than 50 hours the first week, and it seems to just be expected... |

my cousin has the same problem too but she's been there for 5 years or more because of the good pay. she gets to work at 9 am and gets home at 9 pm. Her boss use to like her but she decline a promotion from him and now he gives her tons of work. she doesn't complain but just gets her work done. is it worth it though. she's very unhappy and she's in the process of trying to look for another job.
that's one thing about certain companies, they want their employees to work nonstop and always pointing out the errors. i hope this isn't the companies motto. but do you like it there? |

I like most parts of it and it has been a huge promotion for me. I hope everything will work out once I settle in and feel better. I guess I am just a bit overwhelmed at the moment and not enjoying the newness of it all due to this persistent cold. I guess they have very high expectations and just want someone superhuman. I still think I should have called in sick and gone in with a burst of energy when I got well. I will try to do that still... thanks for listening. |
