please help me understand home microdermabrasion and chemical peels.

1. What strength and type of chemical peel (lactic or glycolic) should one start with and work upto.

2. Microdermabrasion, I am probably considering a kit such as (Epidermix or Olay Regenerist Kit)

3. Should they be used at the same time as in same session? If so what order?

4. Is this too strong a treatment to consider on top of retin A in PM(alternate days) and Vit C serum in the AM(everyday)?

5. Should/can I incorporate a glycolic toner (10%) in routine to keep up the effect of chemical peel?

Sorry for all these questions. I am very interested in these treatments and very confused about usage and particularly cautious about home treatments.

Thanks for your advice!

curiouscookie I have only had peels and microderm done at my derms so I will keep my response limited.
Question 4: Even professional strenght peels and microderm can be done when you are using these products as long as your skin will tolerate it. You should however not use RetinA on the same day that you do your peel/microderm and you should wait until your skin is fully recovered from the procedure and no longer irritated before you resume using your RetinA. Depending on the strenght of the peel/microderm this could mean just skipping the RetinA the day of the procedure or skipping it for several days to a week. I am not sure whether you would need to skip using the Vitamin C. I use MaMa lotion about once a week and I apply my Vitamin C serum right afterwards (well I actually wait 30 min) and do not have a problem with irritation and my skin is very sensitive. Perhaps someone else could give a more detailed answer on the Vitamin C.
Question 5: This is just my opinion but no you should not need to use a glycolic toner everyday. In fact since you use RetinA and Vitamin C this would probably be way too much for your skin to deal with on a daily basis! HTH

Hi Curiouscookie

3. No, no-one would do a peel and microdermabrasian in the same session.

You're doing the same thing with both processes. Dissolving the horny layer of the skin a bit and using 'controlled damage' on your skin to promote a healing response which increases your collagen.

I'd pick one or the other.

1. When you talk about peels. Lactic at 10% is the starter strength. You could probably do this twice a week. It really depends on your skin, some even do it every day. (glycolic I don't know about).

But there are peels and PEELS. The kind Theresa is talking about are much stronger, professional strengths and take a few days recovery. Other peels like DY Lactic acid 10% or PSF pumpkin mask or JB apple peel are much gentler home treatments. You need to do them regularly to see an effect and you shouldn't experience peeling skin or flaking. You still shouldn't apply actives that night though.

4. You shouldn't use Retin A the night you do the microdermabrasion or peel, but try a little bit the next night (a patch test) to see if you're sensitive to it. A lot of people combine home peels and Retin A, but not on the same night.
