Carmenndi(y?), the makeup artist from the makeover show "What Not to Wear" had a great tip about applying mascara so there are zero clumps. She specifically said that it was for applying mascara to your lower lashes, but I want a very natural look during the day. And this gave me the natural look.
Get a tissue, wrap it over the mascara wand, and wipe it off. Make sure you fold the tissue before doing it, cuz the wand could maybe rip through the tissue and you'll wipe all this mascara on your hand right in the middle of doing your make up! Anyway, wipe it through the tissue like two or three times. Do the tops of your top-lash and the bottoms of your top-lash. It doesn't leave any clumping. All of your lashes stay separated and are slightly darker and that's the subtleness I'm going for. And then at night when I go out, I can easily put on mascara and it looks very pretty instead of glubs of black stuff making your lashes hard and stuck together.
Thanks Carmendi(y?) for the tip! And thanks What Not to Wear for existing! |

That is a good idea.
I also run a dry mascara brush through my lashes after I've applied mascara - I ony wear it on my top lashes though. |

In a similar fashion to Emma2006, I just remove the excess after application. But I just use a fingertip across the lashes to seperate and remove any clumps.
The new synthetic wands in mascaras like Max Factor's Masterpiece Mascara are also excellent at giving you a clump-free, lash-defined, natural look. |

I always wipe my mascara wand before applying, it saves so much time |

I'm going to try wiping it this morning as I put my makeup on.

I wonder if that makeup artist owns stock in a mascara company? If we wiped the bristles that much before each application, we'd probably go through a tube of mascara every week!
Actually, one reason I like cheaper mascaras from the drugstore is that there isn't as much product in the tube (unlike Lancome Hypnose, for example -- yikes!) and therefore there isn't as much clumping to begin with. |

I usually wipe mine off too. I understand what you're saying about waste m.april, but I don't think I've ever used a tube of mascara up before I had to throw it away. |

I agree that if we did this constantly, we would end up going through a whole lot of mascara!!! But I don't think Carmindy would do that (atleast I hope not ).
I, however, don't agree with you about drugstore mascaras not having much product in the tubes. I've just purchased MaxFactor 2000 Calorie, and the tube is oozing with the mascara. The wand is always full of the stuff if not extremly overpacked.
But either way, its a good tip for those of us who want a bit more definition yet want to go light on the mascara. |

It actually worked pretty well this morning. Not as much clumping.

I've never actually tried this but heard it works. So do you take the whole wand and brush it through the paper towel? Does this not take off all the mascara then or no. |

I would guess that it does take off the mascara off the wand, but my honest thought is that the mascara cannot really be 'wiped off' without dissolving it in water and soap. Just a guess though. Therefore, a trace of mascara would be left on the wand with just enough product left to lightly coat your lashes. |

I wipe the mascara wand too. I put the tissue on the table and gently roll the wand on it before applying. I've been doing this for years and have never ran out of mascara before having to throw the tube away. So, don't worry too much about waste. Sometimes I also run a clean brush on the lashes to seperate them after. |

I just bought some of this and my god but it is scratchy! I like the effect (not as much as on mini-me who doesn't need mascara really for her superlong lashes the cow ), but it is torture to apply! |
