I was shocked to learn that Aussie conservationist Steve "Crocodile Hunter" Irwin died this weekend.

How horrible! Sad

Though his job was dangerous, and close-calls were not "if", but "when", I feel for his young family.

The World has lost a truly great conservationist & educator!

Very, very sad.

A reflection of how he loved/lived his job:

P.S. Steve, I'm raising m'bottle of VB, and thank you for the incredible amount of first-hand information & knowledge that you taught to the World!

Cheers, mate.

I just read about it in Yahoo and I was shock and couldn't believe it. The article said he was attack by a stingray in the chest while shooting a documentary. It is just so tragic to lose such a man who is so passionate about his work. I started watching him on the Discovery Channel years ago and he instantly grabbed my attention with his energy and personality. He will be missed.

I felt sad when I heard it on the radio on the way home from work.
He did a lot of amazing things for wildlife.

If he had to die so young I'm glad that he was killed whilst doing something he was so passionate about rather than being hit by a bus.

RIP Steve.

I was shocked yesterday, when I read this had happened .. It's just so sad.. He has 2 children, one of which, his son, will probably not remember much about him.. Last I had heard his wife was hiking somewhere, and hadn't been told yet.. How awful for the world to know this before she did..

My sympathies to his family... He did so much good for animals and truly loved and believed in what he did...

Yes, this was tragic news that pretty much brought Aussie workplaces to a stand still for a while earlier today. I feel for his wife and two little kids, and it's a big loss for Australia as well since he did so much for tourism and for charities. I know some didn't like him and didn't agree with certain things he did, but nobody can deny that he had a huge impact on the country.

Ironically, given his dangerous lifestyle, he was killed by a stingray (usually placid and not much to worry about).

I was really shocked and saddened to hear this news. He was so full of vitality and charisma, and will be missed by people all over the world.

I guess the only consolation is that he was doing something he loved when the end came, and hopefully died quickly without suffering much.

When my family and I moved to the U.S. back in 1993, I remember watching animal planet all the time. It was my favorite channel. Well, I also remember watching Steve Irwin constanly with my dad and we'd always figure that with such a job, it would be a miracle if he went away untouched. And sure enough, he'd get bites and stings and such from the animals he was interacting with. And I don't mean to be disrespectful to this man in any way, but this could of been foreseen by him and anyone really. When you play around with crocodiles for a living you are seen as someone who would just be a risktaker for life. And that's what he was.

So yes, it's a shame that he's gone. And yes, he will surely be missed. He seemed like he was a great guy.

It's always sad to hear that an Icon has left us. If life is a journey, he sure had a great ride! I'm left wondering if his children will take over his footsteps when they're older.

RIP Steve Sad

I was so saddened by this...

Yes, his work was risky, but stingrays are normally shy creatures. I understand that it really was something of a freak occurence; that he was spined directly in the heart. Unfortunately, I also read that the toxin causes excruciating pain. I truly hope his pain, if any, was brief. His life was way too short, but lived well. Perhaps that is all any of us can ask for.
