Hi Everyone!
I joined EDS a few months ago and have really been focusing on taking good care of my skin and working to clear it up.
In general my skin is smoother, fewer blackheads, and the tone and clarity has imporved a lot!
EXCEPT (sorry for being so dramatic)
I have been develping HUGE pimples on my forehead and chin.
Now, I am no stranger to acne, but I have never experienced such large, painful ones as I have in the past few weeks.
About 2 weeks ago I developed 2 cysts on my chin (again, cysts are a new phenomenon to me) and since then I have had 3 more cysts pop up on my chin... and the one that i got yesterday gave me a FAT LIP by this morning!!! (now I normally wouldn't complain about a little added pout to my lips, but this is only in the lower right half of my lip... haha)
The thing that confuses me the most is that this does not look like a regular pimple/cyst - the actual red pimple is at one side of it and the "mound" is probably the circumference of a penny and is just flesh coloured and barely seems connected to the zip part). I did not bite my lip 'nor is there any indication that anything else bit my lip (which I think would be the only other explanation). There is also no mark inside my mouth/lip to indicate that its a canker sore or something similar.
Currently I am using
-dermalogica special cleansing gel
- two days ago I started with Dr. H's CC (I know skin sometimes purges, but this isn't a purge, it's an underground eruption!)
- I sometimes OCM and was having good results with it except that it is a bit too heavy to use all the time
- I use ACV toner (which I really credit with improving my overall skin appearance)
- clinique dramatically different moisturizing gel (I've been using it for a long time and never had any problems with it)
- I also recently purchased Pimple Eraser and have been putting it only on my pimples to help dry them up! so far it hasn't done anything.
I guess my question is
a) why is my skin so much better except for these huge pimples?
b) what do you all recommend that I do about it?
c) what exactly is in this "mound"? I am skepitical that it is a zip because it does not look like it has the stuff which a "normal zip" would contain. or is this what cysts really look like and I have just been lucky thus far?
I want to go to the dermatologist, but I live in a smallish town in Ontario and the wait is about 3 months to get an appointment! I think I will still make an appointment, but i'm just trying to think of things that could help in the meantime.
any help you could offer would be great!
Thanks everyone! |

Lulabelle,
It sounds like that might be hormonal acne. If you take bcps, have you changed your pill type lately? Or do you notice a change in other pms symptoms? I think the most common cause for women for that cystic type of acne is related to hormones...unfortunately it doesn't seem like there is much you can do on your own to fix the problem, so it sounds like going to the Dr. might be a good start. I had quit the pill about a year ago and a few months later started getting cysts as you described (Never experienced them before). My skin is finally getting back to normal. There is actually a whole thread about it that Dollbird started here:

Good luck! |

Chin cysts are supposed to be caused by hormones so probably you are having a surge or something? I have this problem around that time of the month and it drives me insane.
I have found that using Retin-A as a spot treatment directly on them causes them to clear up very quickly - within 3 days or so.
Currently, have a Zeno machine and waiting for the next monster to show up to see if Zeno will be able to zap it even more quickly.
I would also recommending checking your phones for cleanliness as bacteria in the hair follicle is what causes the infection to start. The hormonal surges lower immune system function so the bacteria thrives more during these times.
Thus, I have found that antibiotics (oral)work beautifully to stop the cysts. But I simple cannot be on these constantly. |

Clinique's DDML gel ALWAYS broke me out sometime during usage. Maybe your skin has decided not to like it anymore. I had the same problems with my skin too a few months back. I tried BC pills but they only made my skin worse. I would try adding a zinc supplement to your daily routine, this might help. Probably the best thing to is stop using everything then slowly reintroduce each product to pin point the culprit. If you go to the doc you may want to try a form of Retin-A, its worked great for me. |

I think you have to get more sleep, more body exercises , more sweat, and make your digestive system work well.
Nothing can treat acne, just can control it. |

lulabelle do these cysts you have ever come to a head or break the skin? Or do they just erupt and disappear in a few days or a week or so? It does not sound hormonal since it is also happening in areas that are not normally prone to hormonal brekaouts. Exactly what prodcuts were you using 3 or 4 weeks before you started getting these cysts? What were you using before you started taking really good care of your skin? It sounds like something that I may have just gone through recently (hopefully I am through with it!!!) I should be able to tell if it is the same thing once you answer some of my questions. |

Thanks for your replies everyone!
TheresaL: Before I used clinique 3-step and a neutrogena scrub... which worked okay, but was nothing too special.
In the three weeks before all this happened I was using my dermalogica face wash, OCM, ACV toner, clinique clay masque... and two days before I developed my most recent (and largest!) cyst was Dr. Hauschka's Cleansing Cream and tea tree oil on my spots.
I have also been paying attention to things like wiping down phones, changin my pillow case often etc... I have always drank a lot of water... I am also going to start cutting out excessive sugar in my diet and maybe that will help!
The ones on my chin just chill on my face and then just disappear in about 4-6 days... the ones on my forehead are your regular-type pimples and usually come to a head in a few days.
I have been on the same BCP for over 3 years now and never found it to help or give me problems with my skin.
does this sound like what you went through TheresaL? I'm hoping its a purge my skin is doing and not hormonal cysts... my mom thinks I am just using too many new products and my skin is freaking out.
Thanks! |

In my case none of my cysts came to a head, they would just disappear. I also got them on areas where I did not normally breakout. I changed so many things in my routine that I had a hard time saying what was the cause. (I do however know that having a microderm done was a big mistake for me at least and made the cyst situation much, much worse.) I think that in your case one or more of the products you added is causing the problem. I don't necessarily believe in purdging but if you had areas with clogged pores then using products that would bring that stuff to the surface could certainly cause breakouts. If your skin had no such issues before you added the new products then I don't think it is purdging. I do however believe that using certain actives (retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, AHAs) can cause acne to worsen before it improves. However, judging from your routine this does not seem to be an issue. I have learned the hard way to only change one thing at a time in my routine and am trying to be very patient and give every new product I use 3 or 4 weeks to see how it works for me and if it will cause any problems. Unless it is an allergic reaction your skin should not develop pimples or bumps a few days after adding something new they take weeks to develop.
In my case I have gotten to the point where I have not had one of these cysts in almost a month. I actually did not have any pimples for about a week or so and just now I am developing some "normal" pimples which I assume is just the monthlies. I am really keeping my fingers crossed here because I feel that it is too soon to tell if I have solved the cyst problem or not. Take a look at my Proheal review http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=14596 where I try to sort out just what is causing my problem. It is not easy by any means!
I don't necessarily feel that I have been a big help here but my best guess is that it really is something that you have added to your routine (or it could be something that you took away that was helping). It really is just a matter of trial and error. |

Be careful with DDML, this moisturizer should be applied ONLY on dry zones and never on oily or acne prone areas because it contains some fatty ingredients |

Sorry I forget to put this in my last post. I do not think that huge cysts that go away in a few days of so and never break the skin are pimples. I think that true acne cysts take a lot longer than a few days to go away. In my case these cysts almost resembled swellings and I concluded that they were an inflammatory response. I don't know if you have sensitive skin but I certainly do and wonder if part of the problem is a sensitive skin reaction. I have particularly realized that my skin reacts with these cysts when it has been traumatized. I used to get them from strong glycolic peels and particularly from the microderm. |
