Retinoids prior to high strength peels?

I've seen it mentioned here and there that dermatologists recommend using Retin A for a few months prior to high strength peels and then on the Avene research results page one of the observations was on improvements to the skin after using Ystheal for a few months followed by a peel.
What does the peel add to this? From the skin sections they showed it looked like it plumped and smoothed the whole thing out, but then those kind of images can be misleading.

My question really is - what extra function does the peel add on top of retinoids because I thought retinoids did what a peel does anyway, just much more slowly, ie thin the horny layer, stimulate collagen and elastin production to plump the epidermis.
Any thoughts?

Molly, from what I have read the RA (or similar) thins the skin to allow the peel to penetrate deeper, thus allowing for better results of your peel. What website are you seeing Avene research results page, as I would love to see this but I have searched and can't find anything!

Actually, I got it wrong - the Ystheal studies are after laser not peels though I have read you should use a retinoid long-term before a peel.

This is the exact page for Retinaldehyde clinical studies
http://www.aveneusa.com/clindata/default.asp?product=retinaldehyde
and the picture that interested me most is the 'poster' next to the second study "Pre and Post Treatment of Laser Skin Resurfacing: Retinaldehyde Versus Retinoic Acid"
Bottom left of the page it shows a section of the skin using Ystheal pre and post laser.

The general site, which Theresa posted in the Ystheal thread is here
http://www.aveneusa.com/physicians/avene/default.asp

With respect Rileygirl I don't think it's so it can penetrate more. Retinoids don't thin the skin, they plump the epidermis with new collagen and elastin, it's just the horny layer which is thinned (exfoliated) and it wouldn't need months to do that. You could do it with a quick peel.

I'm wondering what a peel/laser does in addition to that plumper epidermis. How does it improve it further because that's what it looks like from the pictures.

Thanks for the link Molly. Here is the only other thing I could find on RA prior to peels/laser.

Retin-A before laser resurfacing or a chemical peel:
Retin-A has been shown to improve and speed up healing following various resurfacing techniques (chemical peels, laser). Thus, healing quicker means less likely to scar and less likely to develop pigmentation abnormalities. Therefore, if you are having laser resurfacing or a chemical peel, then your surgeon will probably prescribe Retin-A for at least three weeks prior to your treatment (and you would stop using it 3-4 days prior to the actual procedure date).
