It originally came out as LE with a brass(?) handle but now it's part of the regular collection. (This is different from the 180 - the small buffer brush. That one has a flat head.)
I need something ultra soft for MMU - I have thin skin with broken caps. The EM baby kabuki I have is just too scratchy. I was going to order the premium kabuki from EM but apparently they're having trouble with Canada customs. |

I can recommend you Jane Iredale handi brush for your MMU. I bought it by recommendation girls from this forum, and cannot speak highly enough about this brush. (thanks everybody ) It's so soft! I couldn't believe it!
ED baby kabuki was my first brush ever, and I was very disappointed with it, it feeled like using sandpaper. |

I got it for my bday and I really like it. It's very soft, not at all scratchy. I think it's definitely a great brush to get, I like it much better than MAC's powder brush 129.
If you're interested you can always go to MAC to test it out before you get it. |

Jumpingball - yes, I read at least another rave for the JI handi brush. I see it has a flat top. Can it be used for buffing?
Sormuimui - glad to hear you give it a thumbs up. I did go to MAC, but they didn't have an opened one for some reason, so I couldn't feel the bristles. Maybe I'll try to check it out at a different MAC location. It's always a plus if I can try first. Do you have the one with the black handle or the brass LE one?
Thanks, Ladies! |

I have the black handle one. But from what I've read on MUA both have the same quality. However, to my dismay I did notice that it says "made in china" which put me off but it seems to work nicely nonetheless. You should also try Japonesque brushes which are slightly cheaper. Their powder and kabuki are super soft, I tried some testers at trade secret. I'm sure they won't irritate your skin as they're one of the softest brushes I've ever tried. |

That's surprising - I have several MAC brushes (including the 129 you mentioned) and they're all made in Japan. Well, as long as it's works BTW, I also find the 129 too scratchy for MMU buffing (seems ok for applying blush to my cheekbones, though).

I heard they were very soft! But I think I didn't bother to check it out the last time I was at TS because I'd read that the Japonesque kabuki brush sheds |

Another thumbs up from me for the Jane Irdale Handi Brush, you really cannot go wrong with this one, one of those brushes you umm and err about spending so much on but once you have it, you will wonder how you ever lived without it.
I agree about going and testing the MAC brush before purchasing, I love the MAC brushes that I have tried so far. |

Yes, it can be used for buffing. It's actually not so flat as it looks like on the pictures. |

It's actually not so expensive. I've got mine off ebay , and it cost me less than $30. |

Thanks, Jumpingball! Thanks, Rosebud!
I'm going to try to get back to MAC this week to check out the buffer brush.
I read, though, that squirrel is the softest hair used in make-up brushes, so the JI handi brush is tempting! |

I read that the JI handi brush is really designed for pressed powder. Have you tried it with loose MMU? |

I use it for my MMU: for foundation, and for finishing dust, and it works really well. |

I recently bought the BOBBI BROWN powder brush.
It is so soft and full - my face feels really pampered every morning when I do my final touches (the feeling of being caressed by soft fingers )!!! |

I ordered the JI handi brush (from eds). I'll post after I get it and have had a chance to try it out. Thanks for all your recommendations!
I had to go to 2 different MAC to try out the buffer brush. I couldn't try it in the first store because the one they had as the demo was stolen! I guess that's a vote for the brush! lol But it seems pretty soft. I may decide to get that one also. After all, a gal can't have too many make-up brushes, can she? |

You are SO right I have both my Smashbox 19 I use to buff MMU and my 182 for things like Silk dust (I bought it initially for Meteorites but I have yet to try out my Winter Radiance). I plan to get Handi as well, but not anytime SOON, haha I guess you can never have too many powder brushes |

I just checked out the smashbox 19 brush. It looks yummy! What's kind of hair are the bristles, do you know? It sounds like you prefer it to the MAC 182...?
Oh, Sormuimui - I can tell you are going to be a bad influence on me! |

I bought it from the recs on MUA. I'd have to say 182 is softer but I think Smashbox is denser so I like it for buffing. I'm not exactly sure what kind of hair it is because I'm not familiar with the different types of hair but it's not as soft as my 182 - but like I said denser so maybe that's y I don't find it as soft. Also I've only washed it once so I think it'll get softer the more I wash it. But I find it very effective with MMU. I use my 182 with silk dust (because I think it's better to have them separate) and I have Mac's 116 for blush...hahaha me and my brushes! I think if you are getting JI handi you wouldn't need Smashbox 19 unless you like having a bigger selection. I've never used the handi so unfortunately I can't compare but at least it's $10 cheaper than 19! |

Yes, I read somewhere that denseness affects how soft it is. BTW, the 182 is goat hair. I think goat hair is supposed to be the next softest, after squirrel... but I guess there are different qualities no matter what hair is used.
I've never tried the MAC 116, but I have the 129 - I imagine they're similar in softness. Don't know what kind of hair it is though.
And now I'm curious about the MAC 187 - the one they call the skunk brush!

Wow - and I thought the handi brush was pricey! |

I've been using the JI Handi brush for about a week now. I was so used to using a kabuki that it took me a few days to figure out how to hold it in a way that works for me. But now that I have, I love the feel of holding it! I feel like an artist when I'm apply my MMU!
The hair is the softest brush I've ever used - but it does feel slightly scratchy to me here and there. I think that just shows me how sensitive my skin is. I've only tried the MAC 182 at the MAC counter, but I would say the Handi is a tad softer I would have to try again for longer to be sure.
Because the head is flatter than a kabuki, I find I have to apply my loose MMU a little differently (press harder when picking up powder, and probably use a bit more), otherwise the powder goes all over the place. (Anyone else have tips on this?)
So I give the Handi a thumbs up! Once it softens up a bit with use and washings and I totally master using it with loose powder, it will get 2 thumbs up!
P.S. I used to hate putting on make-up! Now, between switching over to MMU and using the Handi, I now enjoy it! |

Sorry if my review is bad for your pocketbook, Sormuimui!
I find the coverage is just as good as I got with the EM baby kabuki I was using. I just ordered an EM sample in the intensive range because I want more coverage due to hyperpigmentation, but I was planning to do that anyway.
But just fyi, this brush is not as dense as the 182 (or a typical kabuki, I think), although it is dense -- when I washed it one night it was still slightly damp the next morning! But I know you like denser for buffing, Sormuimui, so I thought I would mention it. But I think it's probably true that denser means less soft. |

I think I got the premium kabuki brush from EM. I ordered the baby kabuki from them but the original parcel was lost (a lot of parcels went missing in August) and got a replacement parcel sent to me. I just went to their website and found that the baby kabuki was discontinued. So I think the brush I got is the premium brush.
The hair for this kabuki brush is white and the hair for old baby kabuki was brown and it measured 1¼' wide and about 2⅜" high. Anyway I didn't find this brush scratchy but there are some loose hairs which is an annoyance. Maybe this will die down after I use it a few more times. |

I have been using my MAC 182 Bufffer for the past week. I love it because it is so exquisitely soft, and is never scratchy on my face. Blends like a dream. I never knew MMU could look this good. Certainly puts my JI Chisel brush to shame. Superb quality!! |

Ninetynine - yes, I think it's not uncommon for new brushes to shed a bit.
EM discontinued the old kabuki brushes because the part above the bristles was breaking. They now have some new brushes, included a baby kabuki premium with a longer handle. Very tempting!
Good to hear another rave for the MAC buffer brush, Dollbird. I'm still considering adding it to my collection even though I like my Handi and also think I prefer the longer handle it comes with.
I think I need another face to justify all the make-up brushes I want to own! |
