Hello, I'm new to this forum. I am 43 years of age and love skincare and makeup. (Oh, and I live in the UK). I would like some advice and wondered if anyone of the same sort of age and skintype could help me. I have combination skin which is on the oily side, but do get dry patches. I am currently using Dermalogica
Special Cleansing Gel
Multi-active toner
Active Mosit moisturiser
Skin Prep Scrub (mixed with Special cleansing gel twice a week)followed by refining mask,
but my skin is still never totally clear. I constantly seem to get spots and now I've noticed that I seem to have a rash on my forehead and some on my cheeks. Do you think Dermalogica may be the cause?
Please help, and if you can, suggest other gentle brands that are maybe not too expensive?
Thanks |

Hi Sharon - i used Dermalogica in my salon for about 5 years - it was a lovely product, but quite simple in terms of ingredients - not really a results-based product. Their products are totally hypo-allergenic, so it's unlikely that your rash is due to Dermalogica. I am 37, and combination to oily skin type. I also suffer the odd dry patch, probably down to not drinking half enough water! Why don't you read "The Skin Type Solution" by Leslie Baumann MD - it's a new book dedicated to working with your skin type, and recommends products specifically for your concerns. The UK version will have products that will be of easy access to you. ( i bought the US version before the UK one came out, and didn't know at the time that the products were different - i'm in Ireland - silly move!)
As regards the spots - i swear by Dermalogica's spot booster, but many people in this forum suggested Juice Beauty's serum as being a god-send... Good luck with your search! |

Thanks for the advice. I will try to get hold of the book. By the way, what skincare products are you using? |

Hi Again - Doing a bit of chopping and changing at the moment. My biggest quest is to find a moisturiser that keeps my t-zone from feeling oily, and the rest of my skin soft - a bit of a quandry really!
Currently I'm using a mixture of stuff, but have bought some of the Skinceuticals recommended from the book, as they come up in several sections - got off e-bay as EDS can't send outside Canada. Will give you the store address if you want. I'm using a foaming cleanser for day (Murad pomegranate), and Exuviance Purifying Gel for PM. Yonka toner. Murad eye gel, Skin Medica sheer o/f moisturiser. As you can see, there's a real mixture, but according to this book, that's how it should be - ie. to get the correct ingredients from varying ranges. Not working too badly so far! |

I have heard of this skincare range but I have not tried it yet as it seems soo expensive. Thanks for all your help though. By the way I forgot to mention that I had used Dermalogica daily microfoliant and I think this may have caused the rash! |

sharons123 I wouldn't rule out the Dermalogica as the source of your rash. Yes they may say they are hypoallergenic but that is not guarantee that you will not have problems. I have very sensitive skin and tried the Dermalogica Soothing Protection Spray which is specifically designed for sensitive skin and this really irritated my skin. I couldn't believe how much lavender is in this product as well as other questionable ingredients for sensitive skin types. I do like the Dermalogica Barrier Repair though and have never had any problems with it. As to the Daily Microfoliant, it seems that most people love this stuff. I myself won't even try a sample of this because it has salcylic acid which my skin seems to have a problem with. BTW I recall reading a while back that someone used the microfoliant and developed a rash. Perhaps you could try serching the forum. HTH |

I must say, I am begining to wonder whether I do have sensitive skin. Beause I get so many spots, I have started to wonder whehter it could be a sensitive skin condition. Also, I do have quite thin skin. When I have used products for sensitive skin, they always seem to be aimed at dry and sensitive and my skin just feels geasy. |

Since I have very sensitive/oily/dehydrated skin I could give several recommendations as I have tried a bunch of stuff. Let's get a little more details about what you are looking for. Do you want something to replace the Dermalogica or to add to it? Are you looking for basic skincare items or are you considering some antiaging products or both? Are you acne prone? Also, define what you mean by not too expensive. |

Basically, I would like to replace Dermalogica and maybe try something along the lines of Olay in price range! (I must admit, I've got to the point, where I get fed up with spending loads of money on high end skincare to end up with the same results). I've been told (by Dermalogica beautician)I don't have acne, but I do always seem to have spots. Anti-aging would be a bonus. Hope that's enough info. |

sharons123 it has been awhile since I have used products in the Olay price range but here is what worked for me. Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser. Although you may need to use a cleansing oil or makeup remover beforehand if you wear makeup or sunscreens. Bioderma Crealine H20 is not a cleansing oil but works very well at removing makeup and can be used in place of a toner. If you want to consider more expensive cleansers and prefer gel or foaming cleansers Jurlique Ultra Sensitive Face Wash and Cellcosmet Purifying Gel are both gentle cleansers and will remove most makeup. Olay Complete SPF 15 Sensitive skin fromula can work as a moisturizer and suncreen if your skin is oily. Although you may need to try this to see if you find it too greasy although I never have. Actually, the Olay Complete is the one drugstore product that I still use and I am only looking for a replacement because I want something with better UVA protection. For a scrub I don't have any low price recommendations but two that I like are Kanbeo Silk Peeling powder ($50) and Komenuka Bijin Cleansing Powder ($32). These are used in place of your cleanser a few times a week. The Komenuka one is supposed to be a regualr cleanser but I would not use it everyday as it is somewhat drying. I would say that the Kanebo is gentler. These both may be pricy but they last a long time and they are both based on very fine scrubbing grains and enzymes. A moisturizer that I really liked was the Bath and Body Works Everlasting Flower serum. This is very light weight and non irritating. I'm thinking that working out a basic routine and then eventually adding some antiaging actives (like Vitamin C and retinol) would be the best way to approach this. I would think that unless you feel that the products you are using now are causing problems, just add one new product at a time. I have sensitive skin and yet it took me forever to figure this out. I try to give every product I add a month to see how it works for me. It has been a while since I have looked at lower priced skincare but some lines that I would consider in that price range are Roc, Olay and Paula's Choice. You really have to pick and choose from each of these lines though (even expensive lines for that matter). Let me know if you have any questions on any of the products that I mentioned. HTH |

Thank you very much for all of your suggestions and the time you have spent on me. I will give some of them a try (as I am in the UK some of the brands you have mentioned, I have never heard of, but will look them up). One of my bad habits has been to always buy the whole range of a skincare line, as I have been led to believe they are supposed to work better together (but have heard this is not true). Also, I have nearly the whole range of Dermalogica, and in the past, if I've gotten spotty I have used the acne range, and then when my skin has gotten dry, I have then used the dry range and so on. So maybe, for the next few weeks, I will stick with my basic Dermalogica routine and see if my skin settles down and if not I will start introducing your suggestions. Will let you know how I get on.

Sharons123,
You sound like my skin twin! I had used Dermalogica for a couple of years and could never get clear. I actually used the same exact products as you! It was only when I switched to a non foaming cleanser (Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel), a gentle toner (Mario Badescu Glycolic Cleansing Lotion and Mario Chamomile Cleansing Lotion) and an oil-free cream (Mario's Control Cream). This has transformed my skin 100%. It is only when I veer away from this formula that I break out.
I guarantee that your problems are caused by the Special Cleansing Gel which is drying and the Microfoliant. You mentioned that you have thin skin (as do I) and our skin does not need and cannot tolerate too much exfoliation. It just causes more harm than good. It took me forever to figure this out because exfoliation is raved about everywhere you look, but no, not for me.
Mario's products are certainly less than Derm's. The Active Moist is a nice moisturizer so maybe you could just change your cleanser and toner. If you go towww.mariobadescu.com you can look at all of the products.
If you have any more questions, please let me know. HTH!

Ali[/quote]Hi Ali, I have looked up this skincare range and it looks promising as well as afordable. I'm a bit concerned about AHA's as I've heard they can be irritating, and I do have an older skin. Do you still need to exfoliate and use a mask once or twice a week, or are the AHA's enough? |

The Glycolic Cleansing Lotion is enough exfoliation for me. As for a mask, I use Mario's Healing Soothing Mask whenever I am broken-out or irritated. |
