Just very recently, thanks to Misha , I found out that some of my skincare problems could be from having my underactive thyroid.
How many of you know have this problem and are you using anything specific to treat any skincare problems because of your thyroid condition?
What conditions do you have that made you notice that your skin was just not right? |

This isn't skin care advice, but you should eat virgin organic coconut oil, and also massage this externally on to your thyroid.
Coconut oil is wonderful for the thyroid. |

Skincare,
Do you actually have an underactive thyroid or are you still waiting to get a diagnosis? I had an overactive thyroid so I know a little about thyroid problems. The good news is that once you get you thyroid problem under control any skin problems you have should improve. From what I recall underactive thyroid can cause dry skin, thickening of the skin (turnover rate of skin cells slows down) and eyebrow hair loss-particularly in the outer half of the eyebrow. Since having your thyroid hormones out of whack results in some of your other hormones being not right you may also experience acne. I am sure that your doctor would be able to help you deal with any skincare problems that are related to your thyroid! The good news is that underactive thyroid is usually very easily treated and once you get your thyroid levels back to a normal range you should feel better in many ways. |

That is the thing, I have been taking medication for years and I do have underactive thyroid. Because of Misha's comment in one thread, it has never occurred to me that some of my skin problems and hair loss could have something to do with my thyroid.
I do have a doctor's appointment comming up but in the meantime I was hoping to hear from others who have the same problems what they have noticed and what skincare products they are using or was suggested that they use.
That way when I see my doctor, I could come up with more questions. |

Skincare I think it is a good idea to try to find out what skincare problems you are having that might be due to your thyroid. And I certainly think that it is a great idea to bring them up with your doctor. My understanding is that your doctor determines whether your medication dose is appropriate by your thyroid hormone levels and by whether you have any symptoms even if your hormone levels seem okay. Perhaps some of your skin problmes are the first indication that your medication may need to be adjusted. Let us know what your doctor says.
BTW hair loss is definetly one of the symptoms of thyroid problems both under and overactive. |

Really sorry to hear about your thyroid problems! I know from experience that it can effect Not only skin but nails, hair, weight and just about every area of life!
For skin care I have been having good luck with PSF. Its hard to recomend any certain type as far as dry or oily because it can and will change once you get your meds right.
But I must warn you that even after you get your meds right it can change. All kinds of foods can change TSH levels. I know shrimp will do that to me. And you must be carefull with anthing with soy in it. But sometimes it just changes for no known reason.
I just received a new order from PFS for my dry skin and in the last week I have become sooo oily go figure!
As far as the thin or bald eyebrows go, my brows had no outside hair at all for years.
Then last Feb I started using Ardel because of all the GREAT advice on this board and I have brows again!! Some even seem a little too long.
All I can really say is, if your find something that works for you stick with it if at all posible because your skin will do all the changing for you.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

What other areas in life could it affect? I thought the weight, height and being alert were the main issues. |

If you have a weight problem then ask your Doc for a natural thyroid such as Armour. Synthetic thyroid replacement does not contain T3. My Doc said the lack of T3 is what causes most hypo weight gain.
Don't know about the height thing. Haven't grown since I was 17 and have only been hypo for 7 yrs. Am now 52.
And we won't ask my husband about the mentally alert thing
All kidding aside I do hope you have a great Doctor who can help you through this and wish you all luck.
