I don't know what is wrong with my skin. I obviously feel my skin is dry tone or easy to get dry, but oil still comes out and make my face shining at the same time I feel my face dry. Every time after one hour of my normal moisturizer or MMU or normal makeup, oil always comes out. If I use pressed powder to clear the shining look, my skin will dry immediately. I tell my friends that my skin is dry, but unfortunately they don't believe me and they say how my skin can be dry when there is so much oil in my face. I am so sad and embarassed for my oily skin too.
Can anyone please tell me what to do with my skin? Should I use some oil control staff, like serum, toner or cream? But I am afraid it will more dry my skin. Or should I use both oil control products and moisturizer? But is oil control product before or after moisturizer if it is a cream? Can anyone suggest any oil control ones? Thank you in advance. |

You can improve this situation--many people have including myself--by healing your skin barrier. You may be overproducing oil in response to the barrier being stripped of it's natural oils from using too harsh of cleansers, etc.
Do not use any harsh cleansers with strong detergents. Use one that is ph balanced and gentle. I can give you some suggestions if you want to PM me. Then if you use some jojoba oil or a mixture of emu oil and jojoba oil, this will help your skin regulate its own oil production and stop over producing. The emu oil is anti-inflammatory and healing, and the jojoba is similar to sebum so the skin thinks that it has enough already and won't overproduce. |

I think your skin is over-producing oil BECAUSE it has become so dehydrated. I suggest you use an OIL to balance your skin for example the Decleor oils (particularly YY). This would be a start, but after your skin is more balanced you might want to discover oils on your own and use something like Rosehip or Emu to further rehydrate your skin. I used to have very oily skin too but I find most so-called oil-control products just dries my skin out and DOES NOTHING to control my oil. Moisturizers on the other hand tend not to absorb very well and clog my pores (no matter what kind I try). Now that my skin is more balanced from using YY oil other skincare products generally absorb better. If you need more moisture on top of the oil you should try manslayerliz's recommendation of zenbiotic's Phyto-Moisture - it seems light and probably will not further aggravate your dry + oily skin.
With makeup I used to use Sonia Rykiel Supreme Compact Foundation which gave me enough hydration and was not rich or cakey. It supposedly contains 80% water which I'm not sure whether that's true or not but it's a very light creamy texture, feels cool on your skin and I set it with some powder afterwards. It's much lighter than regular liquid foundation while in terms of consistency and the FEEL of it on your skin so it won't make you more oily like regular foundation. Setting it with an oil control powder like Jurlique Silk Dust or Dr.H powder would help prevent your oil breakthrough w/o drying out your skin. I also use Sonia Rykiel's makeup base that's supposedly supposed to help with hydration as well. This was what worked for me before I balanced my skin. The best oil control makeup I have used is Lancome's Maquicake UVForever - if I wear it now I don't need to blot until after 10 hours or so but your skin sounds dryer than mine so I wouldn't recommend that for you. I mainly use MMU now but I find it's not good at oil control even if I use "matte". I don't think MMU would be right for your skin right now because you'd still have to set it or prime it with something oil-controlling and moisturize really well for it to work for your skintype. So basically my advice is find a light gel/cream type foundation that will give you some hydration and set it with a very good oil control powder like silk dust.
I've been ranting a lot now,

I used to have this very problem, liangzhiz! Mine stopped shining immediately after I switched to a gentler cleanser and a richer moisturizer. I completely agree with what these ladies are saying. I used to spend so much time trying to dry up the oil! I never realized that I was doing more harm than good. I can't remember the last time I had to blot oil or use powder during the day. |

Another oil to try is the Darphin Niaouli Aromatic Care followed with the Darphin Matifying moisturizer. Try to see if you can get samples, those small sample veils lasts quite long.
I also follow carekate's tip of using Milk of Magnesia as a primer. It's cheap and effective. |

My skin is dry and shiny too. I've tried the decleor YY but at the end of the day my t-zone still gets kinda oily. I'm thinking of trying the JI oil control primer. |

I am currently taking an Anatomy and Physiology course and when we discussed the skin, i asked about the overproducing of sebum when using products that can strip the skin of oil and he had no clue what I was talking about. He claimed the layer of skin with the sebum product has absolutely sense that surface of the epidermis being too dry therefore cannot make up for the damage of someone who is overly drying there skin out. in other words, the sebum has no difference in production whether you use products that are pH balanced or not. I found that interesting. |

Thank you all very sincerely for your reply. Actually I don't know why my face always over-produces oil. When I was a teenage, I already found my face was a lot oily than others', but I didn't feel dry at all at that time maybe because I was young. I thought it would be less oily or even normal when I was getting a bit older. But what is annoying me is my face is not only still oily, but also dry, especially in the afternoon. I am not sure whether it is because of the cleaser. All of my cleasers are without soap and they are for sensitive skin. So they are supposed to be mild. Last winter I also tried a face oil from Clarins, the one for dehydrated skin. But it didn't help either. My skin doesn't absord this oil and what's more it got drier because it didn't absord it. I am using hydrating mask quite often, but still no use. What a irritating skin!
To sormuimui, what brand is it, the Rosehip you mentioned? I what to try Emu oil too. But I am living in South Europe where there are not many brands to choose. If I buy from Internet, I will be charged tax which doesn't sound so worthy. I found a shop recently where there may be Rosehip. |

Hi...I replied to your PM. One thing I didn't mention is that you could try a spritzer in the afternoon and just spray your face if it feels tight/dry. There are lots of them to choose from--I like Avene. |

I don't think you should give up on trying oils, try to get samples of the Decleor. I think you should start with an oil balancing one and then gradually move on to more normalizing/moisturizing ones because you want to balance your skin FIRST. I used to use Clarins Lotus and I've tried the one for dehydrated skins as well but I have to say I much prefer Decleor oils. Lotus didn't do anything for me either, so it's just Clarins, you should give other brands a try. There are quite a few good oil choices, my top three would be to start of with either Decleor Ylang Ylang, PSF Balancing Oil or Dr.H Normalizing Oil. From what I've gathered from other threads Dr.H is most moisturizing out of all of them and YY being the dryest (it is not drying at all, but comparatively not as moisturizing as the others). I'm not sure about what brand of rosehip, I buy online from SaffronRouge or AcquaVita, sometimes from Jurlique so I can't help you with that.
Does your hydrating mask aggravate your oiliness? Which one do you use? I have very acne-prone skin and my all time favorite is Valmont Nature's Moisturizing with a Mask, I find it VERY moisturizing. Everytime I ever feel dry or tight I use it and afterward my face is ALWAYS back to normal. If your skin is dryer you can even use it as a treatment moisturizer and leave it on all day or night. It didnt' make me more oily nor did it make me break out. I had a really tough time after a plane flight last winter and I got a lot of flaky dehydrated skin (before I started with the oils so my skin was not balanced yet) and I spot treated with the mask AM and PM and within a few days all my flakies were gone and my skin was moisturized again. |

It sounds as though your skin was and is very like my own. Although getting older made my greasy skin dry, I think what really made it go even drier is the anti-inflammatory medication I have to take. So maybe some kind of outside factor is making your skin worse, as it did with mine? |
