I just posted one for skincare and now I am interested in what do you consider as upscale makeup.
Do you base your decision on packaging, advertisement, price or how fine the powder is, etc?
I would say...
Cle de Peau
Chanel

Upscale doesn't mean all that much to me since some of the best products I've used are not considered all that upscale.....I think that some of the higher price points in some of the upscale lines are just ridiculous..and unwarranted...ie Chanel's lipgloss....which, IMHO is pretty mediocre. I must admit that I'm a sucker for pretty packaging but it won't drive my purchasing decisions...nor will prestige..I'm driven mostly by results and the company's charitable efforts.

I generally go by the quality of the product. But, yes, I do get suckered in by packaging
I would add Armani and Sisley to that list. I see Chanel to be in line with CD and Clarins to be honest. |

Yes, I get suckered into packaging when it comes to something that other people can see. Example, in a public washroom.
I do use Chanel lip gloss and I do like it. It is a bonus that the packaging is classy.
I also using the latest Chanel lipstick, what an interesting way to package lipstick I might add! So cool! |

I just had to add my input here.
Upscale is as upscale does.
If the product IS superior then the price is, perhaps, warranted. If, however, all you're paying for is a pretty standard product but one behind which is a huge corporation and advertising campaign, I think that "upscale" in that case is just "sucker's bet".
I am always astonished as how much money people seem to pay for products that don't work all that well. Of course, I'm biased since just about anything that has an emulsifier seems to make my skin react ... but I've tried expensive stuff and cheap stuff ... all with the same disappointing results.
My skin has never been so good as in the last year when I've used OCM and made my own toners and used very simply things to moisturized ... and I'm 55!
I think we have been conned into thinking that the more expensive the product ... the prettier the packaging ... the better quality we are getting ... and that simply isn't true.
Now, if the products you're using work ... and you aren't going into debt to purchase them, then that's fine ... but I'd really hate to run up credit card bills just to purchase an overpriced skincare product. [On the other hand ... I'm known for being frugal!]
"Upscale" only means "more expensive" ... and doesn't necessarily correlate into "better quality".
Just my two cents ...

Hi all, I used to think that any makeup bought at the dept. store was upscale, but that was many years ago and I've learned alot since. I want something that will work for me, I don't care whether it comes from Walgreens, Macys, online or Sephora. Since I shy away from dept. stores b/c to me the prices are jacked up, I'm not as tempted by the hype or pretty packaging. But every store I go into I'm looking at the makeup |

Chantecaille is my favorite upscale makeup line. I don't really base my decisions on price or packaging. I base it on texture, how the make up feels on my skin, how finely the powders are milled, color etc.
Edited to add that I love Shu Uemura for eye shadows and brushes too. |

Yes, I would have to agree that Chantecaille has prestige and not sure if it is anything more then that |

It is a matter of preference and opinion. I never considered Chanel to be upscale. I think of it being more in line with Clarins and other mid-level department store makeup lines. Chanel's handbags are gorgeous and worth every penny, but their makeup and skincare is nothing special. I spent hundreds on their skincare and makeup during a beauty event at Hechts and ended up tossing most of it within a two or three months since I wasn't pleased with the quality and texture. The only thing I kept was two Chanel makeup brushes I purchased. I've learned my lesson and stick with what I love now. After all expensive does not always equal the best. And packaging doesn't alway reflect how good or bad a product is either.
I used to be a bit of a product junkie and tried so many different lines… Chantecaille, Chanel, Darphin, Sisley, La Prairie, Bobbie Brown, La Prairie, Trish McEvoy,Fresh etc… And honestly I prefer Chantecaille for their foundations (not everyone can get a good color match though), lipsticks, and loose powder. The quality of their eye shadows is good, but I find the quality of Shu Uemura's finely milled eye shadows to be better.
La Prairie's Caviar Concealor Foundation is nice and I do love the packaging. So very convenient having foundation and concealor in one package. And at one time I was a sucker for packaging. But, I like Chantecaille's Real Skin Foundation better and as a result my LP foundation just sits in a drawer. |

I consider anything I can't buy at the drugstore "upscale." I'm not really kidding, though. |
