Hey,

I'm new here even though I've lurked and read all your good advice here for a few weeks. I decided to register and post this question in the hopes that some of you have dealt with this problem or know the best way to reduce the effect. Maybe it is hopeless, but considering you all know so many other little secrets, I had to try.

I've had rather severe keratosis pilaris my whole life (it's a thickening of the skin around the pores that creates unsightly bumps, red marks, and redness on arms, legs, face, etc). I'm 21 and it hasn't disappeared (as some people experience) and I've seen a few dermatologists about it already. I know there's no cure but to be honest, I don't really care about the bumps. They're less severe than they ever were and are the least of my worries.

The redness, however, really upsets me. Underneath the somewhat-healing bumps, all of the skin on my upper arms is highly pigmented red. Not only in little dots, either, but in mottled, splotchy red. I can't make myself wear tank tops or anything else because the redness looks like a very definite farmer's tan. Tanning helps the color balance out but we all know how bad that is, so I was hoping that some of you could give me some advice on alleviating the redness so I can start wearing tank tops and being utterly self-conscious.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks so much for your time!

Hi Les,
I've had a very slight KP on my upper-outer arms, nothing like what yours is, sorry to hear about that. What's helped me most so far is a few Skin Biology products: Exfol cream or LacSal cream a.m., and then one of their CP creams in the evening... You could go to the skinbio site, click on their forum, and ask your question there. I'd start with something least-irritating and calming, instead of adding more aggrevation there. Of course avoid any steroidal-type creams or MetroGel or anything like that, which in the end damages the skin. You didn't mention if any of the derms had given you Rx for it or not.

Just a thought may be to consider a natural rosacea-type product as rosacea is also connected with a lot of redness and blotchiness. I believe a line called Rosacea Care has a fairly-natural-ingredient calming Strontium spray that my husband has used with success on his face.

I have had KP for as long as I can remember. It runs in my family, my sister has it too-and worse than me. I started experimenting this time last year with how to get rid of it and I have had varying degrees of success with 3 things: Alpha Hydrox brand AHA lotion applied on the KP once daily in summer/spring or twice daily in winter/fall...Ahava mineral mud soap-I have NO idea why this works but it is highly effective. And internally, I take supplements that contain EFAs (essential fatty acids). Right now I have had such good luck that I just use the soap and supplements. The lotion seems to be effective also at clearing up some of the scarring I had from it. My sister uses the lotion but hasn't tried the soap or supplements, and it has cleared hers a great deal (but not completely).
